Pashmina encounters Dream Theater

It was at our drummer's place - big screen, fancy surround hifi. It was a recend DVD of a live concert in Budokan. Sorry, I didn't encounter the real Dream Theater!

good god, what the hell, though? I guess as a statement of just how
far you can take "technique" in the context of heavy metal, it's worthwhile, but God, I really can't imagine actually managing to make it through an entire concert. Highlights:

a/ 2 numbers in, I'm like why do they even have a keyboard player? I
can't play for shit and I could probably hold down this gig. Later in
the set I ate my words haha.

b/ wtf is it w/the keyboard player's rotating kurzweil stand? that's
pretty fucked isn't it?

c/ why does the drummer have 4(FOUR) kick drums?

d/ most of the keyboard player's lead breaks are phrased like lead
guitar breaks, and use a similar tone. Would this band actually be
better off w/2 guitarists?

e/ if you were to ask the question "who is the best rock (x) player"
the answer would undoubtedly be "the (x) player in dream theater".
This could probably be scientifically proven.

BUT...

f/ do they EVER lay off? the drummer, who is AWESOME, and and who
additionally has the best heavy rock groove/feel I've heard - how can
I put this? Imagine a drummer who's really fiddly on the hi-hats,
like he never lets up w/the tikka-tikka-tickler-tickler-tikka-tikka
all the time he's playing. The drummer from dream theater is like
that except on the kick drum. It's a bit much.

g/ the singer looks kind of like some ultra well-groomed windham hill
type, like yanni or something.

h/ in addition, he has this weird stage lighting setup, like he has an
upward-pointing light at the front of the stage, and when he sings, he
steps into it, so his face is lit from below. I guess it would be
really effective on small stages, but at the Budokan? WTF?

i/ I liked the band best when they sounded most like Metallica. The
mettalica-ish bits of dream theater would basically blow the real
metallica into the weeds!

j/ I had this funny thought part way through, and I started laughing.
The guitarist asked "what are you laughing at?" and I said "I'm trying
to imagine what this band would sound like with mo tucker on drums"
and he sort of frowned and said "who is mo tucker?" I couldn't really
explain.

k/ and amusing alternative take on this is to imagine what other
records would sound like if the drummer from dream theater played on
them - it works best with, say, edgar froese's "epsylon in malasian
pale" or Brian Eno's "Apollo" or Popol Vuh's "Brothers of
Darkness/Sons of Light".

l/ The guitarist plays so fast his lead breaks sometime sound like
what Sinclair Spectrum or Commodore C64 game tapes would sound like if
you played them on yr hi-fi. He basically seems to know of no other
speed except "faster than you could possibly ever play in your whole
entire life, loser haha" leading to...

m/ there's this bit where he's playing a flamenco guitar break over
synthesiser orchestra. It would have been great, except he plays so
fast, it sounds like a bee.

...and...

n/ at one point our guitarist was like "LISTEN TO HIS AWESOME FUCKING
TONE" and I'm like "how?" none of his notes ever sing out or decay. I
mean, he could have the best tone in the world or the worst, and you'd
never be able to tell.

...and...

o/ his signature model music man guitar has the most ridiculous lower
cutaway imaginable. I mean, there's enough room that you could get
your leg through it & play guitar w/your foot if you wanted to.

p/ the bass player. Jesus fucking christ. Hello carpal tunnel syndrome

q/ on the whole, for all they're really fucking mightily impressive,
they're kind of athletically impressive, rather than musically
impressive. If I wanted to see a technoflashy rock concert, I'd much
prefer to see Rush or Utopia. Dream Theater can play faster than any
musician in Rush or Utopia, but it seems to me that grandstanding
their awesome technique is the nr1 aim of this band, which is valid, I
guess, but Rush and Utopia have tunes that are 10000000x better.
Which is not to say that DT have no tunes, I can remember one or two
of them, but there's nothing anywhere near as good as "Last of the New
Wave Riders" or "Subdivisions" or "Communion with the Sun" or "
Xanadu".

There you go. It's probably worth seeing this even if you're not into
this band, or their whole aesthetic, just for the sheer ludicrous
spectacle of it.

He's had his hair cut since that came out!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 5 February 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

I would like to have a DVD of Pashmina watching this at his drummer's place.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 5 February 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

With a Carrot Top bonus commentary for no apparent reason.

Dr. Z Indahouse (AaronHz), Saturday, 5 February 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

Apparently one of the bonus features on the DVD is about the bass player. He practises forever, and the only time he does not have a bass guitar in his hand which he is practicing shredding on is when he's eating shitting sleeping or presumably fucking!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 5 February 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

Presume nothing.

Haha OMG. Happy birthday, btw Joe. I realise I'm a day late, but there y'go.

Yeah, great review, fuckface. You hardly said anything about the songs other than you didn't like them.

ha! Talk about missing the point! Perhaps I should de-google this thread?

(btw, who do I send review copies to for this site?)

The review is great as well!

I'm still laughing a little about point K, above. That's the thing about these guys. I don't think they're capable of tasteful playing for more then 2 minutes straight. I guess that's not the point of their music, though.

it's really funny when people make fun of a band like Tool for being prog wankers when there's nightmares like Dream Theater around

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 12 October 2006 04:00 (nineteen years ago)

Does anybody like this band that isn't actually a musician themselves? I can't imagine what you could get out of it otherwise.

Their songs just seem to be frameworks for showing off their musical ability. All their riffs sound like variations on tunes by Rush or Kansas, hence their songs sound like medleys of something you know but can't quite place.

For all their technique it's pretty basic rhythmically. They sound like the songs that get played on instruction DVD's at some drum clinic or something, the kind of songs that only exist to demonstrate a technical point. Really, someone like Billy Cobham or Christian Vander are way ahead in terms of rhythmic complexity and improvisational ability.

The bassist has a really flat, horrible tone that means you can barely hear him most of the time.

The singer rarely seems to sing, no? Most of the clips I found on youtube he's nowhere to be seen. What a cushy job! They should give him some congas like Deep Purple did with Ian Gillan. Or a tambourine.

I would love to hear a collaboration between Dream Theater and Tetuzi Akiyama.

ONE OF THEIR ALBUMS IS SEPARATED INTO "ACTS" AND "SCENES."

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 7 April 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

Ha, I just watched some of the Budokan thing.

Based on both observation and personal fan-meeting, I get the feeling that Dream Theater (and a lot of similar music) appeals mostly to people who are unhealthily fixated on one particular emotion -- the feeling of being really awesome at something and showing off and doing victory laps and going "wooo-haaa I am the awesomest at this EVER check out how RAD I AM."

This theory is supported by the fact that a lot of the people I've met who enjoy music this way have been either (a) athletes, (b) music-shop guys whose music-knowledge is kinda the only notable thing they have going for them, and (c) misfit teenagers who have zero experience of being bad-ass or awesome at anything, and are quiet and socially outcast, and so you can totally understand why they might fixate on the victory-lap feeling, because the poor guys just aren't being given enough to win at.

Still, I can't imagine a life listening to music in that competitive-sports kinda way where it's 100% about performance and going "OMG did you hear what he did, that is SO bad-ass."

nabisco, Sunday, 8 April 2007 00:46 (eighteen years ago)

or (d) only like wanky music?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Sunday, 8 April 2007 00:50 (eighteen years ago)

Actually you can even throw out the victory-emotion theory -- you meet people now and then who seem to appreciate music less as an art and more as an act, like an amazing trick someone can do. Leading to acts like this, where no matter how much writing and planning go into the music (and clearly there's a shitload), from the listener's perspective it's just people performing something. Anything. Nobody cares so long as it's impressive.

(You could try and claim that's just another cool mode of listening, maybe like listening to jazz improvisations, but jazz listeners manage to focus on performance while still being interested in style and construction and that whole other side of things.)
