Link to sites where possible.

...and it doesn't matter if it's your band I guess ;)

Me first - Wintergreen. They are simple BLUDDY GRATE.

Their website's here:

http://www.iwantwintergreen.com/

and their song, Clockwork Mice is just marvellous. Download it now!

The Fatales

I haven't bought their CD, but the free tracks they have up are really good.

Deer Park...

try track: r-ocean

Brown Belt...

try track: look & feel of $100

Julia Marvel...

try track: closer to the action

all pretty much tuneful indie, surprisingly.
DP is defunct, but are finishing up a record that will be solid if not classic. BB is new, has some angularity to it, good live. JM, also new, are big fun.

best band I saw recently was shellshag?, but I don't know their signage status cuz I'm not friends with them and stuff.

Hooker

Best Manchester band around. Zoe McVeigh has amazing power. Every support slot I've seen them do, they've blown the headliners off the stage.

Romo-synth-spacepop-skankyhoboy wonderfulness!

The Phantom of the Operating System (kate), Monday, 7 February 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

Ming Mang Mong are Geordie Mick from prolapse's new band. They sound like a slowed down add n to x and use a battered old speak and spell as their vocalist. All their songs are about imaginary and not so real numbers and the arguments that ensue...

Androo Anooorak, Monday, 7 February 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Hot 8 Brass Band have finally released a record, available at Louisiana Music Factory. It's, well, hot.

I don't see much for the commenting part of the thread question, so I'll give it a shot. These are only my first impressions and I'm not a professional critic, and am heavily biased towards things I like and against things I don't.

The Fatales ("Minister Of Defense"): I dunno, it's OK at parts, but too reminiscent of Interpol/Franz/etc. Maybe I would've liked this a few years ago. But really, it's an OK song.

Wintergreen ("Clockwork Mice"): Oh this I like. Very sweet.

Hooker ("Like It My Way"): It's nice, but a bit too cookie-cutter. Is it me, or do I hear Kathleen Hanna? It had a nice burst at first, but kinda lost me after 30 seconds (again, first impressions)

Brown Belt ("Look And Feel Of $100"): This is probably my favourite of the bunch. I like the sound of the guitar; the rhythm section is pretty cool too. Pretty tight.

Deer Park ("R-Ocean"): This didn't do it for me. Maybe it's the live recording.

three years pass...

i've been digging Que Sera - http://www.myspace.com/queseramusic
i dug them over a year ago and can't believe they haven't become more well known.
"fox in crimes" is my favorite song on their myspace.
i'm hoping they'll keep making music...i'd put my money behind them if they needed it.

Faisal Shennib, Saturday, 1 March 2008 01:07 (seventeen years ago)

i'd put my money on you being the bass player

chaki, Saturday, 1 March 2008 01:20 (seventeen years ago)

i live in montreal, and they be in LA, and i have no connection with them. i would love to play music with them, though.

Davey D, Saturday, 1 March 2008 01:29 (seventeen years ago)

btw, i liked wintergreen the most out of whatever links actually worked. red bennies was alright too.

Faisal Shennib, Saturday, 1 March 2008 01:31 (seventeen years ago)

I recently was a delegate at "By:Larm", which is sort of the Norwegian equivalent of MIDEM. Some of the acts I saw were very much signed ones, such as Lykke Li, Superfamily and Disciplines (used to be Norwegian band Briskeby, only singer Lise Karlsen has been replaced by Ken Stringfellow of The Posies).

Anyway, there was one band that I saw that were somehow less established, and yet they were great. Their name was Ponyboy:

They are riding a bit of a kraut-shoegaze thing. I try to rep for local acts when I can.

I was just listening to Hi-Fives All Around! Very good sloppy indie-rock from Toronto. "What Happened to Being Polite!" a standout track.

Holy shit, I am too now, thanks to this thread. Thanks! I've got "In Our Backyard" repeating.

Why are all these band names terrible?

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Saturday, 1 March 2008 13:52 (seventeen years ago)

most band names sound terrible when you first hear them. The Velvet Underground - the Beatles (terrible pun) - The Smiths - Creedence Clearwater Revival etc etc

I think they may have two drummers. Its pretty wild, reminiscent of that Squirrel Bait energy but they seem older. They may be more well known than their unsigned status would have you guess.

Bright Red
http://www.myspace.com/brightredband

Two of Peter Koppes' daughters and two other people. Very early-80s girl power pop, i.e. Divinyls, Altered Images.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 2 March 2008 01:56 (seventeen years ago)

The band I recommended is of course called Donkeyboy, not Ponyboy. They also have a video that has become kind of popular on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2xE4QpRjJ8

Just came across this French band, the Love Machine...

pretty good electro-punk-psych stuff.

They do. Or at least they did.

jim, Sunday, 2 March 2008 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

Hmmm... My pick upthread, Donkeyboy, have recently topped the Norwegian singles charts for weeks with their first two singles, "Ambitions" and "Sometimes". "Ambitions" is now close to having spent half a year in the Norwegian top 20 singles and is also on its way up the Swedish charts. They have also gotten some attention in the UK, after supporting a-ha on their UK tour, and no less than three of their songs have been picked as Popjustice's "song of the day".

And they are still great. :)

Cleveland's Afternoon Naps have been building up a great following the last year or two, and have gotten some good gigs recently, including a spot at the Cleveland edition of the International Pop Overthrow and opening for Ronnie Spector (!). Great 60s-influenced pop, boy/girl vocal harmonies, and lots of fun energy live. Co-lead vocalist Leia is a joy to watch, often playing the keyboards and glockenspiel simultaneously while she sings.
