"Snowball" + singles - Field Mice. Can't stop playing it. May well have underestimated it in my undying and enduring love for "Skywriting". Admittedly, it's not as good (or varied) as "Skywriting", but it's not as bad as I thought it was either. Also have finally got to hear "That's all this is", which became my anthem for last week when life got shittier and shittier as the week went on.

Rob M (Rob M), Monday, 7 February 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

Lil Jon - Roll Call / What you gon' do (CD Single)
v/a - Salsoul 30
v/a - Folk is not a four letter word

The last of those is an Andy Votel compiled LP of dark/acid folk obscurities from the early 70s. It takes off from where the first part of disc 2 of Saint Etienne's "The Trip" left off. It's patchy, to be honest, but with Linda Perhacs, Wendy & Bonnie and The Poppy Family all featuring, I'm certainly not complaining.

Warners/Rhino compilations including:Hallucinations and Come To The Sunshine (both comps of late '60s US pop-psych 45s, both delicious)
I want Come To The Sunshine but because it's a Rhino Handmade thing it's on the expensive side - HMV wanted £25 or something of that order for it!!

Jeff W (zebedee), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Various Artists: Sahret Ataba Wa Mijana (Lebanese & maybe Syrian folkloric music, sometimes with some electronics thrown in (not usually thrown in well)--pretty good, I was worried after the first track, but the later tracks appear to be good)
Al Turath Ensemble: Jasmin Garden (Traditional Syrian music with a covering featuring decadent oriental voluptuaries)
Husein Sabsaby: Taqasim Oud 2004 (Syrian oudist doing oud solos within the tradition of improvising on particular maqamat)

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

Lots of contained frenzy on the doumbeks.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

I'll be making this stuff available pretty quickly, I think.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

Telephone Thing, Friday, 11 February 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

I'm after having bought some bargains, bejabbers:

FOPPsters check out these:
£3 - The Associates, Fourth Drawer Down (80s music which is actually GOOD for a change)
£3 - U Roy + Various, With a Flick of My Musical Wrist (typical Trojan comp., wonderful and irritatiing by turns, conclusive proof that, despite the close proximity of Cuba, Jamaicans can't do Hispanic accents)

Got this elsewhere:
£4.99 - Guided By Voices, Under the Bushes, Under the Stars (the last time indie guitar music was worth a fuck)

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

m83 - 'before the dawn...'

bushwick bill - 'little big man' and 'phantom of the rapra'

blackstreet - 'another level'

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

But the copy of "Doing it for the kids" has finally been sold from the charity shop. I'm so disappointed.

Anyway, "(Maybe it's right to be nervous now)" by Magazine, for a tenner. Nice.

Rob M (Rob M), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Cake: 'The Distance' 7"
The Game: 'The Documentary'
V/A: 'Run The Road'
Antony & The Johnsons: I Am A Bird Now
Bright Eyes: 'I'm Wide Awake It's Morning'.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

the Extra Glenns, 'Martial Arts Weekend' - kinda tossed off, not one of j0hn's stronger sets of songs, but it was half price!

Low, 'I Could Live In Hope' - yes i finally have this, it's absolutely gorgeous. It's neat to hear how much Alan has grown as a singer, when compared to the Great Destroyer.

Azita, 'Life On the Fly' - really solid.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Paddy McAloon - I Trawl The MEGAHERTZ (nice, very sentimental)
Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz To Come
Berio - Sinfonia (Electric Phoenix version -- just ok, not as good as the '69 Berio / Swingle)
Phthalocyanine - No One Said You Didn't
Robert Rutman - 1939
Miles Davis - Dark Magus
Tangerine Dream - Phaedra (remaster)
Gilbert Amy - une Saison en enfer
Klaus Schulze - Timewind
Francois Bayle, vol 18 - La forme de l'esprit est un papillon
Bernard Parmegiani - l'oeil ecoute

(Jon L), Monday, 21 February 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

Earth - Earth 2
Burning Witch - Crippled Lucifer
LCD Soundsystem - s/t
Slowdive - Catch The Breeze
Xiu Xiu - Fabulous Muscles
Tristeza - Dream Signals In Full Circles
Cerberus Shoal - Bastion of the Itchy Peeves

Rizz (Rizz), Monday, 21 February 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

Snow Patrol- Final Straw
Postal Service - Give Up

I don't like either album, to be honest. Bought both after I went to store specifically to get Devotchka, of which there was none, figured i'd get these instead ("rebound" purchasing is BAD news, never ever do this)...and am now dismayed by my lack of taste. Especially where Postal Service is concerned. I think I'm the last person to find out how annoying this album really is. It just makes me angry. ENOUGH WITH THE BEEPING!

Zein al-Jundi: Traditional Songs from Syria

The songs themselves are great. I'm not crazy about al-Jundi's voice and singing, but it's acceptable. There are probably better performances around, but try finding them on anything other than cheap lo-fi cassettes.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Friday, 22 April 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Saturday, 23 April 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

it seems pleasant enough so far (compare to the last sea and cake album, which also seemed pleasant at first, if i remember correctly, but at the same time had something obviously off-putting about it to me, which the prekop does not). it'll take more time to see if it's anything more than that.

you should really get the ugk album instead.

Josh, play.com has Bobby Digital for £5 which to me sounded dead cheap, so I got it.

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 25 April 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

That should be five pounds. No idea why it came up with a question mark.

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 25 April 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

OK, that's very weird; it came up with a question mark instead of a pound sign originally, honest.

?!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

I mean, is it the 2CD on ampersand that documents the live recording or something else?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

Hmm...

"Sons and fascination" / "Sister feelings call" - Simple Minds, a fiver in HMV, very good, a lot better than I expected, should have bought it about 21 years ago after I fell in love with "New Gold Dream", but there you go... Am now trying to find the second "Methods of Dance" LP that Virgin issued in '82 for some reason.

"Post Punk vol 1" / "Indie Pop vol 1" - Rough Trade comps from Fopp for a fiver a piece. Very happy, very happy indeed.

Rob M (Rob M), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

ha julio. it's a bootleg. I shouldn't have even listed it, it's on loan, not a purchase, and it's only a brief 18 minute excerpt of the full 10 hour installation followed by a 1985 interview. It's Cage reading much as he does on that live recording, but with Amacher drones based on field recordings made out on Walden Pond. I can tell it's immersively good but the low fidelity makes it difficult to enter into.

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

For those based in London. Got Coltrane's "Interstellar Space" for £5 from the record stall off Goodge Street. They have a quite a few other Coltrane albums at same price - and not the ones you can get in FOPP for a fiver either.
