Jamie Lidell has completed his long-awaited new album, due for release in June. Multiply is an incredible album of electronic soul and RnB, that should see Jamie take his rightful place as one of the best vocalists of his generation. The album includes a separate DVD by Jamie’s visual collaborator Pablo Fiasco, with films and edits of their live shows performed over the last year.

leigh (leigh), Monday, 7 February 2005 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

could be good

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Monday, 7 February 2005 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

saw him live last summer. astounding.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Monday, 7 February 2005 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i think this will probably be my favorite album this year... fair guess.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

could be boring

seeing him live was astoundingly.........not as astounding as everyone made out

"best vocalists of his generation" hahahaha only if "his generation" means the IDM-coterie of vocal-shy pasty edgy rebels who hate ideas of popist "crass" commercialism still try and warble shit into a mic then process it to fuck to disguise their pitiful attempts to sing.

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm ... have you heard super_collider?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

he was astounding at mutek, but that was at an intimate venue and the evening just had crazy audience/artist synergy.

it's tricky (disco stu), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

definitely looking forward to the live DVD half of it

tracks 3, 6, 8 on Muddlin Gear kill me outright in the good way... overdriven techno 70's Miles Davis stompy music for driving accidents... but I fear there's no room for that approach on an album that spotlights his vocals, which you either love or hate

(Jon L), Monday, 7 February 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
leaked

it's a keeper

manuel (manuel), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

All the Lidell I've heard is the Boom Bip mix of "Daddy's Car" and the two tracks on the Warp videos DVD. Is Muddlin Gear worth checking out? And is "The City" on Multiply? Cos if so, that's my purchase guaranteed right there. Shit is hot.

Telephonething, Friday, 1 April 2005 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh, i looked forward to d/l-ing this... the 2 tracks i heard a a couple of weeks ago where fantastic. is it on slsk, then?

toby (tsg20), Friday, 1 April 2005 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

it is

manuel (manuel), Friday, 1 April 2005 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

He's apparently playing the barfly in london tonight.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 1 April 2005 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i mentioned this on the "is it too early to list your current 11 2005 favorites" or whatever thread

really great. i almost hate to make this comparison, because it's really unfair to Jamie and his great record, but it's almost like if Jamiroquai made a glithcy sould record that was actually as funky as he pretends to be

now that i'll be living that comparison down forever, i'll go listen to the record some more. it's great.

rentboy (rentboy), Friday, 1 April 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

and fuck if i can type.

sould = soul
and glithcy = glitchy

rentboy (rentboy), Friday, 1 April 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

And is "The City" on Multiply? Cos if so, that's my purchase guaranteed right there. Shit is hot.

Shit's about twice as hot as anything else on the album, but the whole thing's still worth hearing.

such a WEIRD record.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 1 April 2005 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm... well... can anyone share this on slsk? i can't find it

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 1 April 2005 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll be sharing it later if i remember to log in when i get home.
(i'm at work right now)

rentboy (rentboy), Friday, 1 April 2005 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

fantastic : )
i've got 4 of the 10 now off slsk, but it's stopped now for some reason and i am quivering with mortal terror at the prospect that i may not get the rest.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 1 April 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

can anyone yousendit?

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 1 April 2005 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

if i have it finished with enough time while at work i will yousendit...

and does anyone know if the version of music will not last is the same as the herbert single?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 1 April 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, based on what i've heard... i would be SOsoSosoSo surprised to hear something better than this by year's end... and i cannot wait to get the vinyl

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 1 April 2005 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks!

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 1 April 2005 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, it's the same as the herbert single -but- it's 3 and a half minutes long now...stops just before the glitchy drum run kicks in in the original

manuel (manuel), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

ok... i'm getting pretty frustrated by trying to get the rest of these... could anyone yousendit "A Little Bit More" , "Newme", "This Time" , "Game for Fools" ? anyone of those or all of them? If by some weird fluke you don't have the rest, I could post those up.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i really like it, is he the joss stone of idm?

rizzx (rizzx), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

is that a diss?

rentboy (rentboy), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

not a diss, although i dont really feel ms. stone

rizzx (rizzx), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

this is actually the album i've been most excited about for the better part of 3 years, so this is a very big day for me. which makes me a total geek, sure, but...

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

still waiting to find the rest if anyone new and generous has it yet

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Love the first super_collider. Pretty much like the second, though it doesn't do as much for me. Is Lidell solo the same kind of thing or does he take it in a more straight "songs" direction?

phil jones (interstar), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

this album is definitely songs... sounds like marvin gaye/sly/prince funky and soulful without being condescending or remotely ironic... not much in the way of digital manipulation either. who knows what's on the missing songs, though.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

what tracks do you need?

Joris (rizzx), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i hate that jamie lidell has to be qualified as not ironic. (that's not a dis to you firstworldman, it's more frustration with why he would even be considered ironic to begin with)

basquiat (disco stu), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i need "a little bit more", "this time", "music will not last"

please and thanks : )

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

because so many faux-soul acts out there exist that it has to be stated that a pasty white guy from brighton can emote and get funked up and amplified with the best of em. ever.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think it's that simple, but yeah, i cannot wait to hear this.

basquiat (disco stu), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

what do you think it is then?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

ysi is slow as a mofo. coming up though

rizzx (rizzx), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

thank you SO much!

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i think it's part of modern culture for some people to not trust anything that is filtered through media or popular culture as genuine or without ulterior motives (and even that is oversimplification). it's like authenticity or realness is always suspect, authenticity and realness being traps in their own right

basquiat (disco stu), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

http://s10.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=11225WHR2I83M1T6PU160GX6KD

'a little bit more'

rizzx (rizzx), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

well... realness is so often fabricated at this point that i guess it becomes a case of who can posture most convincingly. when an artist is unwilling to assume a pose, his authenticity is questioned much more often, obviously. but i gave my disclaimer only as a means to explain for anyone who was unfamiliar with lidell. i don't think that i've heard anyone question his realness other than to express befuddlement that he's not black.

authenticity and realness are not just traps, though, the cultivation of authenticity is a very pretentious pose.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 1 April 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i need to see him live, thats supposed to be something else right? he's holding himself a fair bit on record isnt he?

rizzx (rizzx), Friday, 1 April 2005 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

which reminds me...also, why do people think he's sexy? i feel like that's mentioned in every article. how he's got all these girls hanging around at his shows? is it because they sense he could function just as easily in a corporate setting?

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 29 January 2006 03:00 (twenty years ago)

I saw Lidell play on a bowling green this afternoon, if that helps? he was wearing a t-shirt and thongs though.

He's kinda alpha-male by indie musician standards isn't he?

fandango (fandango), Sunday, 29 January 2006 13:11 (twenty years ago)

was he playing bowls kit? best game everr of course. provided the acid is good.

i quite like small doses of this record. like "i'm the question mark, the walking talking question mark" phrase. all that pomo bollix. neatly done. little engagement tho... like him least on the mark stewart does bright lights big city ttrack. wldve liked to have seen him on kits bowling green doing otis covers with alive band. mightve been a laugh.

so, what should i offer?

A first listen judgement of Jim leads me to believe that all the worst impulses on Multiply have been, um, multiplied.

bet he's still awesome live.

Probably a different proposition now he's using a live band - I've seen him do songs + jamming solo, playing with pick-up bands, and straight jamming, and if you like the soul end of his stuff, then he's still great singing with a band, but it doesn't even touch the songs + jamming combination.

I really like the new one. Brave for him to come out with something so different, but I think it works. Great songs and he has the voice to back it up.

The Wire's notice of the new record -- although favorable -- couldn't have mischaracterized the man more if it tried. Shame. Where's Sherburne when we need him? At any rate, Compass is really, really nice.

So, picked this up and it's kind of a stylistic mess, overly long, not too cohesive, and just generally disappointing (with some nice tracks sprinkled in).

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 20 May 2010 21:28 (sixteen years ago)

Save me a bit of time here - what are some of the good tracks? I was really disappointed in the last album (the Jamie Winehouse comment upthread is OTM) but I've certainly not given up on him.

everything, Thursday, 20 May 2010 21:58 (sixteen years ago)

Not sure about individual tracks yet (listened once through), but I do recall the first half of the album seeming stronger. Not sure if the actual songs are better, or if the quality's similar and I just got bored of the album as it wore on. I'd start with the first track (which I do remember being alright) and skip through the next few from there.

I was really disappointed in the last album

See, though, I thought Jim was impeccably written and was pulled off really well. Love that album...

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:07 (sixteen years ago)

I'm listening to I Wanna Be Your Telephone right now on Hype Machine and liking it.

I should probably give Jim some more spins and see if I misjudged it. Someone else who's judgement I trust just told me the other day that it's great and I was already thinking I should go back to it. I remember that I found it to be quite bland (though certainly well put together) after Multiply, which I thought was cool and kinda unusual. But I think I only played it twice then forgot about it.

everything, Thursday, 20 May 2010 23:57 (sixteen years ago)

With a little more growling and perhaps a few more unhinged horns "The Ring" could be described as Foetus-esque which is a very good thing!
