For example, post-punk/lo-fi prog connexion shockers.

1. Gary Young's favorite album is Close to the Edge!
2. In Deborah Curtis's Touching from a Distance, there are photographs of a teenaged Ian in Nektar t-shirts!

IT IS NOT BAD TO LIKE PROG

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

It once was. Imagine the flack in 92 Pavement would have caught for being more associated with Yes than The Fall. And in 79 if Ian Curtis was wearing Nektar t-shirts on stage, in interviews, or even just tooling around Manchester.

Not that you have to play along or anything, but if you have deep dark band secrets, share them.

pavement had lots of prog in them. they also had lots of fall in them. and, rumor has it, lots of swell maps, though i've never heard the swell maps, so it's hard for me to say. but this is not exactly secret, nor is it particularly deep and dark. nor was it ever.

and besides all that, i'm not sure anyone has ever confused "pavement"'s tastes with gary young's tastes.

now if eminem was a black man who had been wearing whiteface all this time as a way to sell records ... THAT would be a good deep dark band secret.

Gary Young was a crazy old hippie; everyone knew that. It's probably the reason SM and SS were friends with him; I wish I knew an old drunk guy who'd let me borrow Rush albums.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

it was absolutely no secret at the time (90-92) that Gary Young was a huge Yes fan. Thurston tells this great story about Gary coming up to him after an early Pavement/Sonic Youth show and comparing them to Yes (Kim's jaw hit the floor)... Thurston was really proud of that.

but to add to the thread is that picture of an 18 year old Kurt Cobain in a reggae sunsplash t-shirt.

Paul Raven (Neon Hearts/Killing Joke/Prong) once played bass in Belinda Carlisle's backing band on Top of the Pops. He brags that they had rough cocainey sex afterwards, but that doesn't make the event any less unfortunate.

SM used to have a prog radio show. i mean, it was probably the hipper end of prog, with faust and shit like that, but nonetheless.

prog is fucking awesome. also, pavement is fucking awesome. joy division, i can take or leave. i can also take or leave yes, actually.

1. a fairly well-known and ilm-heralded band that i won't name had their most recent album initially rejected by the UK label that eventually released it.

2. one of the guys from rye coalition plays in a 60s rnb sounding band with his dad.

Also George Michael's fav album is JD's "Closer"

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha that first sentence confused my head. Band secret = your band actually has a younger sister! The lead singer of which you fucked!
