not a joke.

?!??!!????!!?!

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Um, OK:

"Brown Brothers Recordings is proud to announce the preparation of
our first full-length album. "Gold Sounds", featuring James Carter
(saxophones and sousaphone), Cyrus Chestnut (keyboards), Reginald Veal (bass) and Ali Jackson (percussion) was recorded this past September 14-17 at Electric Lady Studio B in New York City. The album, recorded and engineered by Steven "Val" Mandel (D'Angelo, Roy Hargrove, E. Badu, Rod Hohl, etc.) and mixed at Bear Creek Studios in Washington by Ryan Hadlock (Stephen Malkmus, Elvin Jones, etc.), features these stellar jazz musicians performing their versions of songs by the band Pavement."

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

Look at that! At first I thought the title was "James Carter and Cyrus Chestnut cover Peanuts," which seemed to be old news. One question, why'd they have to go and "correct" the spelling of Gold Soundz?

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

I really really really love that version of "Trigger Cut" and I can't wait to hear the rest of the album. This totally made my day. But I'm a Pavement fanboy, so yeah.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

very strange. but this is the post where i brag that i've seen both carter and chestnut perform.

oskar shindig! (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm intrigued by this, but I'd like to hear the songs that have the full band, because if all it is is noodly solo piano, then there's a dozen Radiohead-covering pianists I'll listen to first.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

i agree "trigger cut" is fab -- this really legitimizes the comparisons between pavement and steely dan. ;-)

oskar shindig! (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

there's a dozen Radiohead-covering pianists I'll listen to first.

yeah but the difference is that cyrus chestnut is actually GOOD.

oskar shindig! (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 February 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Huh, crazy. I've hardly heard any Pavement in my life, but I would buy a record by this band any day.

I wonder whose idea this was? I could see James Carter as an indie fan, possibly, but Cyrus Chestnut? Jason Moran + Bjork seems natural, but THIS!

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 February 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

If crack jazz quartet tribute albums replace string quartet tribute albums, we are entering a golden age.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 February 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Someone tell the Bad Plus to keep up!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 7 February 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

jesus that guy's take on the "Trigger Cut" verse is annoying.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 7 February 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Uh, ah...oh. I'll have to listen to this. Brad Mehldau is very good, by the way. But this sounds like a totally bad idea. Yeah, I saw James Carter at the Village Vanguard a while back, he was pretty great, and I like his records. This Pavement thing, how in the world do you cover those songs as "jazz"???!!?

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Monday, 7 February 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

I would love it if they recorded a version of "Black Out." I feel like that song would translate very well in this style, especially if it included horns.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

This Pavement thing, how in the world do you cover those songs as "jazz"???!!?

there are a couple straight jazz songs in the pavement catalog: their cover of dave brubeck's (via lawndale) "take five!", and "newark wilder".

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

I imagine (not having heard it yet) that it would be easy enough to translate Pavement into jazz terms, just 'cause they were so friggin' tuneful

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

I thought they used a lot of interest chord voicings due to non-standard tuning, which presumably would be of interest to a jazzbo. Or so I've read- around here, I think.

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

"interesting"

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

man listening to that "trigger cut" i'd love to hear a new orleans r&b piano type album of pavement tunes

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's all adaptation - that version of "Trigger Cut" takes a lot of liberties; it's not straight muzak like a lot of the Radiohead piano record.

I think that a lot of Malkmus' melodies lend themselves rather well to this jazz context. It's not such a stretch to hear songs like "Rattled By The Rush" or "Blue Hawaiian" played in this style.

I'm really into instrumental recordings of modern pop songs and Pavement is my favorite band, so this is a big deal for me. Bear in mind that I'm a guy who has been curating a personal collection of those string tribute cds for three years now.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

i like "rattled by the rush" a lot but i wouldn't call it one of pavement's more tuneful melodies. it's pretty laconic, which i think is sorta the point.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

I think that's true of the performance, but not so much the song. If you transpoe the vocal as a bassline and keep the melodic focus on the lead guitar and harmonica and throw in a bit of improv, it could work very well as a jazz tune. That's my gut instinct, anyway.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

see, i think it's too melodically simple for jazz. but hey, you say potato...

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

Which songs do you think would work?

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

most of the others mentioned so far, perhaps! i dunno. "the hexx" would probably be the best ever.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

tho more than a jazz band, i'd like to hear somebody really heavy cover "the hexx." sounds so much like "dazed and confused," i love it.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

I was just thinking that "Motion Suggests" would translate well.

I'd be thrilled if they did "The Hexx." Oh man.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

I want to read a Downbeat blindfold test where they only play indie records.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

Hstencil, which version of "The Hexx" do you prefer - the loose jammy one, the BTC tour pop metal version, or the spacey Terror Twilight version?

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

i um like them both? no conflict for me.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

pop metal for me! one of the bigger disappointments of terror twilight for me though i suspect/look forward to the deluxe reissue edition of that record redeeming it (ie. allow me to listen to it without baggage).

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

"pop metal" sure is a weird way to say "led zep," but that's cool.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

man listening to that "trigger cut" i'd love to hear a new orleans r&b piano type album of pavement tunes

yes! my thoughts exactly.

oskar shindig! (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

professor longhair vs. stevie malkmus would be awesome.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

I think that I'm still sorta disappointed that they never made a nice studio recording of the BTC "Hexx." Or maybe they did. I really hope so. It's one of my favorite songs ever. "She knows what it's like to be 45 or 53" --- ah makes me melt! And the solo on the BTC live version is amazing, especially with the bass line that Mark plays.

I love them all, though.

(That version on the b-side of "Carrot Rope" is the loose jammy version, before anyone mentions it.)

Yeah, Led Zep is more accurate. Pop metal sounds more like Winger or Bon Jovi.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

i wanna hear a bebop "western homes"!

oskar shindig! (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

I'd rather hear "Western Homes" done up like a jaunty musical theatre number!

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

well to be fair, led zep is pretty much pop metal.

i'd sort of like to hear a cooled-out miles davishy version of that song that goes 'open call for a prison architect' (forgot the title, it's on BTC) all of a sudden.

ugh, musical theater. i'm outty.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

I'd rather hear "Western Homes" done up like a jaunty musical theatre number!

naw, that song has basie/ellington written all over it!

oskar shindig! (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

The song you're thinking of is "FIN." aka "Infinite Spark."

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

"Grounded" for solo soprano sax plz!

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

I just put it on and you're right, Oskar. It would be way better that way.

I would love to hear "Grounded" done up by a string quartet.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

the coda of "stop breathing" needs some trombones and altos.

oskar shindig! (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

This is the official tracklisting according to the label:

1) Stereo
2) My First Mine
3) Cut Your Hair
4) Summer Babe
5) Blue Hawaiian
6) Here
7) Platform Blues
8) Trigger Cut

"Platform Blues" is a really good choice!

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 7 February 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

seven months pass...
as today, the album is officially released, let's revive this thread.

Have you heard it? Do you intend to buy it?

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

"have you heard it?"hell no! "do you intend to buy it?" hell YEAH!

don, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

I have it, and I like it. Need to play it more but the piano-only "Trigger Cut" is (still) my fave so far. "Stereo" feels a bit gimmicky but I suspect I will grow into it.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Was Stereo the one they initially had playing on the website, with the tambourine backbeat? 'Cause that one was f'n hot.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)
