Because Love Is The Slug is FUCKING AWESOME, and I don't really know any of their other stuff. Any good?

Donut Christ to thread!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

single sided 12" vinyls with etched cartoon drawings of the girlss = classic.
rules and regulations = classic.
thunderbirds video = classic.

proper pop album = not so classic.

but i could be wrong. need to dig out the album and try it out again.

mark e (mark e), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"Love is the Slug" was quite possibly my favorite single of....what was it? Summer `87? In any case, I played the fuck out of it at every opportunity. The rest of their stuff? Eh, not so much. Is it available on disc anywhere? Wait, lemme check iTunes. Must hear it RIGHT NOW, and no longer possess a turntable.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 7 February 2005 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"Love is the Slug" has been getting a lot of play over the last year at least in L.A. probably longer in NYC. I have that 12"!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 7 February 2005 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

self 12" has bohemian rhapsody
i love a band who covers yoko ono"walking on thin ice"

self, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Just don't get the BBC sessions.. they're not nearly as good as the studio stuff..

Really, all you need is the album, which is called Bostin' Steve Austin in the UK, and is self titled in the U.S. There are some singles though, unless the idea of a silly a cappella version of "Bohemian Rhapsody" done by four pink punky girls sounds cute 4 U,

...but "Love Is The Slug" invented everything good about Le Tigre. I love those drums and the fuzz bass.

There really should be a proper deluxe reissue of We've Got A Fuzzbox And We're Gonna Use It with all the bonus tracks.

"X X Sex X X X" etc.

Not too into the period when they were simly called Fuzzbox.

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"self" and "walking on thin ice" were both brilliant.

True, but Le Tigre take themselves WAY too seriously to ever be compared to the Fuzzbox.

teh one bird was dead fit

Paul (scifisoul), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm, my 7" single (Geffen, 1986) calls the band Fuzzbox. "From the Fuzzbox album We've Got A Fuzzbox and We're Gonna Use It."

dlp9001, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah they dropped most of the name later in their career

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Weird, I recently found a copy of their single "Walking on Broken Glass" (of course a cover of Yoko). Not really much fuzzbox on it, but it did come with a 1/2-inch We've Got a Fuzzbox And We're Gonna Use It button!!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 03:43 (twenty-one years ago)

They didn't drop it in 1986.. they were called Fuzzbox in the U.S. because "it was easier to market". They kept the full name for the album at least in the UK.. but then reduced it for Bang! worldwide.

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoops, confused Walking on Thin Ice and Seasons of Glass into a new track altogether. I should have checked first...oops.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, my Le Tigre comparison was just relating to the first song off the first album, not the more meandering "i'm gonna tinker on my synths" form of Le Tigre, nor the "Tackhead covering New Kids On The Block's 'Hangin Tough' in a war protest stylee" Le Tigre.

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

that first album is pure nostalgia for me. that and the shop assistants album. For the record, WHCN in Danbury, Connecticut loved both those gal groups. (as did i.)

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

pink sunshine is the sound of akward teenage boners.

it came out on a cassette single and that alone blew my mind.

Ha! REVIVE.

I'm about two inches away from buying this:

ihttp://www.gogetwise.co.uk/site/music/images/fuzzhits.jpg

I mean, it's got to be worth the fiver Amazon are charging, right? And I know I love at least four of their songs...and on reflection, they might have actually been my first ever band crush.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 29 August 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

fuh.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 29 August 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

they totally were my first band crush.

danny boy, Monday, 29 August 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

I got a copy of their first US LP for $2 a couple weeks ago, and it's great!
I now regret passing up a single I saw at Amoeba called "We've got a beatbox and we're gonna use it." Same group or what?

naus (Robert T), Monday, 29 August 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

doubtful.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 29 August 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

Heh, a friend of mine recently made an inquiry about them.

Ian Riese-Moraine: a casualty of social estrangement. (Eastern Mantra), Monday, 29 August 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

I owned the Canadian version of that debut, called Bostin' Steve Austin same as in the UK. "X X Sex" and "Love Is The Slug" pounded as raucously indeed as everyone says.

"Spirit In The Sky" - not as good as Norman Greenbaum's original, mostly 'cause the oriignal had more fuzzbox! Still better than Dr. and The Medics tho.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 29 August 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

The success of Fuzzbox caused the temporary retirement of the Nightingales.

i liked the one track i heard.

-- Dan Selzer (danselze...), August 29th, 2005.

Elaborate, please!

Dr Benway (dr benway), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

Robt lloyd ran vindaloo records.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

.. which was the Nightingale's personal record co. Signed a few mates. Fuzzbox do well, Robt less time to do 'proper band job'

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

But the last Nightingales record I heard was In the Good Old Country Way, which predated Fuzzbox... I think. So how was it a temporary retirement? Did the Nightingales continue to function into the 90s?

Dr Benway (dr benway), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

They were the first poster I ever had on my bedroom wall. I was only six. 'International Rescue' was so ace. I bet I'd be disappointed if I went back to my Fuzzbox records now though, not sure how well they'd age.

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

Click this sentence to download the charming video to the excellent Love is the Slug.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

The Nightingales were still together when Fuzzbox were going. The Vindaloo Summer Special record which is a collaboration with Fuzzbox, Nightingales and Ted Chippington came out in 1987 I think. The Nightingales do "Let's Surf" which is a good one. Lloyd started his solo career the next year.

everything, Wednesday, 31 August 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

The Nightingales-Just a note to say that the seminal Nightingales album In - The Good Old Country Way - is about to be reissued with extra tracks including Let's Surf from the Fuzzbox/Vindaloo Summer Special EP.

one year passes...

fuzzbox is becoming one of my favorite bands ever.

you know, i drink a lot, and, i like to sing along to my songs. but, sometimes i lose control of rock and roll and forget the words. with fuzzbox, i can just go whooo whoooooo whooooooooooooo! and, it's completely right.

i fucking love these girls.

The simply Fuzzbox period was pretty forgetable. They should have become "We've Still Got A Fuzzbox But We're Not Going To Use It Anymore".

everything, Thursday, 12 July 2007 01:06 (eighteen years ago)

which one went out with rob newman?

pisces, Thursday, 12 July 2007 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

I thought they were fab, both in their indie and post-New Pop phases. The latter remains fiercely underrated; kudos especially to "International Rescue," a bitter anti-Thatcher polemic dressed up as a fluffy Thunderbirds tribute.

rip jo ..

for a good few months, i really loved fuzzbox.

they had a sense of fun that few indie bands did back in the miserablism of the late 80s ...

time to dig out their etched 12" of "rules and regulations" give it a proper airing ...

mark e, Saturday, 27 October 2012 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

Oh shit :(

I'll always remember Fuzzbox for this, weirdly, from watching Saturday morning TV (as you do when you're a kid). For years I thought I'd actually mis-remembered this, but it turned up on Youtube! (With weird backing tape rewindy thing going on!)

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 27 October 2012 18:01 (thirteen years ago)

i loved how they started out as this really inept indie band and then morphed into a full on saturday morning kids tv pop band.

dont think any other band crossed over the supposed divide quite as enthusiastically as they did ..

mark e, Saturday, 27 October 2012 18:06 (thirteen years ago)

I have all their CD singles. RIP...

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Saturday, 27 October 2012 18:46 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, you're right Mark. It goes from BANG THUMP bedroom indie to Pete Waterman at the speed of light. I remember the Whistle Test version of Spirit In The Sky bearing only a passing resemblance to what's a really basic song.

passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Saturday, 27 October 2012 21:23 (thirteen years ago)

When they shifted to pop it took me a while to realise that they were the same band.

love the back of the cd cover.

all very normal. pics of the band, credits, record label gumph.

and then at the top : 'batteries not included'

mark e, Sunday, 16 February 2014 13:26 (twelve years ago)

xpost Really? I love both and never noticed this, will have to check this out.

Mark G, Sunday, 16 February 2014 21:51 (twelve years ago)

Loved these guys when they first came out. Never really occurred to me until giving it a relisten now how GOOD of a bunch of singers they actually all were.
