THE SAN PEDRO FILM SOCIETY AND ROCKET FUEL FILMS ANNOUNCE THE PREMIERE OF: WE JAM ECONO - THE STORY OF THE MINUTEMEN

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 4, 2005
For more information, contact
Keith Schieron
press@theminutemen.com

The San Pedro Film Society in association with Rocket Fuel Films is proud to announce the premiere of WE JAM ECONO - THE STORY OF THE MINUTEMEN at 8PM on Friday, February 25, 2005 at San Pedro's historic Warner Grand Theatre. Minutemen Mike Watt and George Hurley along with Director Tim Irwin and Producer Keith Schieron will sit for a question and answer session with the audience after the screening. Michael Halloran from San Diego's
FM94.9 will moderate the question and answer session.

WE JAM ECONO - THE STORY OF THE MINUTEMEN is a feature length documentary chronicling this ground breaking, early 80's punk rock band from their humble beginnings in the harbor town of San Pedro, CA to their untimely demise when lead singer and guitarist D. Boon was killed in a van accident in December of 1985.

Told by those who were there, WE JAM ECONO - THE STORY OF THE MINUTEMEN weaves together footage from over fifty newly shot interviews with archival interviews and live performances to capture the dynamic energy and do-it-yourself spirit of these punk rock pioneers. Newly shot interviews include Minutemen Mike Watt and George Hurley as well as Flea, Greg Ginn, Richard Hell, Ian MacKaye, Thurston Moore, and Henry Rollins among others."

FLEA!

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 7 February 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

(I know, I know, he played on that Watt album that everyone played on.. but still.. FLEA!!!!)

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 7 February 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

A bit late, no?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 7 February 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

Flea is awful.

the minutemen story is a good one tho. and watt's always entertaining.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 7 February 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

Why are you surprised about Flea? Regardless of what the RHCP became, they were legitimately part of the burgeoning L.A./SoCal punk scene. Flea was even in FEAR for a brief spat.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 7 February 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

I never knew abt Flea being in Fear. And because I was so anti-RHCP, I never bothered to check out their early releases. Please don't hurt me.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

Why all the Flea hate? Don't forget- he played on "Bust A Move."

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

I just hope there's less talking heads, more Watt walking around 'memberin'.

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

flea also plays the trumpet on some stuff, and was the first person i ever saw wear a "fela" shirt.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

really looking forward to this film, hope theres lots of good archive footage of the band in action. Flea was also the-kid-with-the-rat in hilarious punk film 'Suburbia'.

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

Flea's been extraneously involved with all sorts of cool stuff (and I definitely prefer him to Kiedis by a million miles), but ugh, that bass playing.... he has a lot to answer for in terms of bad white funk and metal bands.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

But the Red Hots have baby appeal!

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

Aw man. I want this on DVD right now.

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

dude Flea is so cool and good you guys wtf hes the bass player on the MArs Volta too and he dances in a James Brown video and is in Suburbia.

charleston charge (chaki), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

minutemen = my favo band

charleston charge (chaki), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

my favorite part of the trailer was seeing the humongous wall of vinyl in Thurston's room, then cutting to Henry Rollins's humongous wall of... cassettes! rock!

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

But who's got the 8-tracks?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

lou reed.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

Flea is a better bass player than his legacy suggests. Even if he made slapping a cliche, the guy has loads of heart and enthusiasm. He's one of the good guys.

I guess I'm glad for this film project, though to be honest I'd rather have a film version of "This Band Could Be Your Life."

(Wow, I just realized the number of anti-rockist threads that would accompany a film like that.)

don weiner, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

aw This Band Could Be Your Life is a great document. It isn't the most sharply written book, but the ground it covers means a lot to me.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

In the sense of a similar documentary on each band that's feature length each? Hell yes! That would be a great series. The Mudhoney one would be hilarious. The Dinosaur Jr. one would be hilarious as well, though not intentionally.

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

It's about as sharply a written book as any on music given the competition. And as a historical document, nothing covers 80s indie rock better.

J. Mascis can kiss my ass, although it would be pretty great to see Lou and him fite on camera.

don weiner, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

was there footage of the notorious "sock puppet" incident that's so underscored in that chapter?

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

it would be pretty great to see Lou and him fite on camera.

there is footage of this, half a sec in the "teenage riot" video.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

But who's got the 8-tracks?

I'm pretty sure that Don Fleming of Velvet Monkeys/BALL/To Live And Shave In LA has the world's largest 8-track collection.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

http://www.acidlogic.com/graphics/suburbia.gif

That's Flea far left (above kid with `hawk). Respect is due.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

never knew abt Flea being in Fear.

Flea was also in the Circle Jerks for a couple months in 1984 (great show too!)

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

also he played trumpet for fishbone in early 2004 for 2 shows!

charleston charge (chaki), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

Suburbia was a boring movie.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

But The Big Lebowski wasn't. Nor will this be.

briania (briania), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 04:00 (twenty years ago)

OH HEY I HEARD THERES A MOVIE ABOUT THE MINUTEMEN

Who did release magic family out from the base of $499 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 04:02 (twenty years ago)

Ah, those were the days. I saw 'em in Baltimore and D.C.--D Boon jumpin' up and down, Watt flyin' the flannel on the bass, Hurley poundin' away with his hair all over.

steve-k, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 04:56 (twenty years ago)

thanks for this pete! it's makin the rounds already!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 07:45 (twenty years ago)

Saw them in Providence in the fall of '85, shortly before Boon was killed. Damn they could play.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Only saw em in Oct '85 @Irving Plaza (SY opened), loved the records.

Tonguing the rat was the highlight of Flea's career.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

Flea also had a tiny part in Back To The Future II.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

And My Own Private Idaho.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

In defense of Anthony Kiedis, he was pretty good in Point Break...

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

It's probably too much to hope for, but it'd be good if this movie has a little vintage footage of Wire and the Big Boys, to show that the 'Men didn't come out of absolutely nowhere music-wise...

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

The Big Boys? I never did see them, but I enjoyed Biscuit's later band Swine King.

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

I DONT CARE THAT FLEA IS IN THIS, BUT HOW COME NO CARDUCCI?, OR SACCHRINE TRUST?, KIRA?, MOMMY BOON?, HUSKERS?, PETTIBONE?...

IM SIKED AS SHIT THO.

A sprawling collection of raw instrumental rock (ddb), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Pete, I'm sure watt will mention bands like Wire or the Pop Group.. I'd be a little surprised if he didn't. but it's ultimately up to the editors of the movie, and if they do edit those parts out, maybe they're trying to capture a feeling here of complete innovation, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, even if it is slightly disingenuous (and I stress "slightly".. you can't say Minutemen = Pop Group + Wire, for example. They really were quite original, as much as watt namedropped his favorite bands, and might have shown small elements of inspiration of said influences.)

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

is carducci in this? I havent seent the trailer but it look like him from the gallery of talking heads on the web site

jb, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

carducci is supposed to be releasing those old pettibon films on video for public consumption through his own company. watt stars in at least one of them. i really want to see these, i'm currently reading the scripts for them and they're ridiculously funny.

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

fuck, I'm not really looking forward to a film at the Earl but I guess it could be worse. Not really sure why I wouldn't just wait to see the DVD, which probably will be by the end of the summer, no?

don weiner, Monday, 18 April 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

I'm hoping the dvd will be out before summer's end. I hope, anyway.

buck van morrison (Buck Van Smack), Monday, 18 April 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

I'm definitely gonna be at the Black Cat screening.

a friend told me that Rhino is going to be releasing the DVD, but I haven't found any info online to verify that yet.

I saw it in D.C. the other night! it sucked having to watch it in the crowded downstairs bar of a rock club, I could barely see the screen, but great flick.

There've been tons of rock movies at Reade, tho most in retros.

Bump... Both NYC screenings tomw sold out, but if you get there early enough there's a standby line.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 23 May 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

saw the early show at walter reade and it was great.
genius choice of interviewing watt while he was driving around san pedro in a van and the inclusion of the acoustic sets were great. I'm looking forward to the dvd.

If there were weak points with the movie it was with some of the commentators - I don't think flea added much (and no I don't hate flea or the red hot chili peppers). Also the J. Mascis comment seemed useless. I lot them didn't sound/look to good (J. Carducci, R. Hell com to mind)
On the plus side it was cool seeing colin newman show up and talk about how some people got wire (such as the minutemen) but that most didn't. Also cool to see Petibone in his studio with all his work.

During the question and answer the filmmakers said they wanted to get other commentators such the guys in husker du but couldn't afford to meet them. They did say they would add more commentary for the dvd along with three live shows.

slojas, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

yeah, there were definitely some interviews that didn't add much to the film, but I can understand if the filmmakers asked some of the more (semi-)famous people to sit down with them on camera and say some things and then felt obligated to use at least some of their commentary even if they didn't say anything especially interesting.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 03:40 (twenty years ago)

Seattle showings start this Friday and go through June 9th.. every 7pm and 9pm at the NWFF (on 12th st. e in cap hill)

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

Sure be nice if video footage of that Minutemen/Charlie Haden jam were included...

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 06:55 (twenty years ago)

Great to see that doc with the great LOUD sound at the Reade. The live footage gave me instant recall from 20 years ago how you could hardly take your eyes off Boon onstage. The 3 shows on the DVD should make it a must. This was a lot less comically 'Behind the Music' than the MC5 or Ramones docs since we only got brief accounts of the Watt-Boon van debates/shoutfests.

I enjoyed the (intended?) irony of J Mascis marveling at a fat guy bouncing around the stage. George Hurley was quite the surferdude Adonis!

More screenings including SF and a return to NYC:

DVD is coming along, still building the extra stuff. We will be including 3 live shows in their entirety (well we MAY have to cut out creedance covers and the like due to licensing difficulties), The music videos the band did, and tons more spiel.

WE JAM ECONO - THE STORY OF THE MINUTEMEN is the acclaimed feature-length
documentary on the too-brief life of one of the most revered, intriguing,
and inspired American bands ever. At the heart of their story is the
immeasurable personal and musical bond between bassist Mike Watt and
singer and guitarist D. Boon. Childhood friends, their unbridled
creativity and political views were the foundation of this groundbreaking
band which refused to be categorized as punk.

The film weaves together personal tales from Watt and drummer George
Hurley with archival interview footage of the band and rare live
performances. New interviews with over 50 musicians, artists, journalists,
and friends help tell the Minutemen story, from their humble beginnings in
the harbor town of San Pedro, California, to the tragic 1985 death of D.
Boon in a highway accident in the Arizona desert.

DISC 1:

- "We Jam Econo - The Story of the Minutemen" (90min)
- Original music videos for: "This Ain't No Picnic," "Ack Ack Ack Ack" and
"King of the Hill"
- 19 Deleted Scenes and Interviews
- Uncut Bard College Interview (56min)
- English Subtitles for the hearing impaired

DISC 2:

62 songs from three live performances:
- The Starwood Los Angeles, CA - November 18th, 1980 (Includes multi-angle
feature)
- 9:30 Club Washington, D.C. - 1984
- Acoustic Blowout (Cable Access Show) - Hollywood, CA - 1985
- 16-page booklet with full color photos, flyers, filmmaker notes and
liner notes by David Rees, creator of Get Your War On.

Here are some of the nice things that folks have been saying about We Jam
Econo:

"Lovable documentary about the lovable band... their idealism, their humor
and decency is spellbinding" - Sarah Vowell, The New York Times

"The Minutemen were influential then and now, and "We Jam Econo" is a
valentine to the band and D. Boon’s memory. They’re immortal now, and
that's as it should be." - Jeff Shannon, Seattle Times

"We Jam Econo resurrects and hoists high a genuinely maverick spirit, with
its depiction of the Minutemen's humble beginnings, the band's visionary
music (a hybrid of punk, funk, jazz and beat poetry) and populist approach
to rock-as-lifestyle, and the members' shared sense of mission that
inspired hundreds of other bands to take up the cause. Old fans and
newcomers alike will feel proud to stand before it and salute." - Fred
Mills, Detroit Metro Times

Tower Records going out of business and marking the music DVDs down, currently, to 40% off = happy Ned.

five years pass...

I finally watched this last night. I never thought of myself as a big fan of Minutemen, but I seemed to recognize almost all the songs, which was encouraging. I kept wondering if Minutemen have any relevance today...was trying to figure out if they register with anyone other than 40-something white guys sitting in middle-class living rooms in front of their record collections. (I might just possibly fall into that demographic, except for the record collection part since I done gone digital.)

Like it really did feel like a very, very self-enclosed thing, and I found it (aside from the occasional mom and like one friend) kind of stunningly non-female, even though that's not the sort of thing I'd usually think about. I generally don't do gender politics, but it did get a little bit odd after a while. Like they must have influenced at least *one* female musician? Really enjoyed the acoustic bits.

So I dunno. I kind of ended up wondering if they'll be the first SST canon band to fall out of the canon. Not really invested in the answer, but the question definitely occurred to me. Not taking anything away from the movie...

It's a valid question. I've spent time wondering if Saint Vitus could fall out of the canon because of girl stuff.

but i don't think that many things fall out of canon simply because they appeal mostly to guys

hmmmm--what would make them less relevant to women than Black Flag/Replacements/Hüskers? their smart, leftist, non-rapey lyrics? don't quite get this, except if you assume that women are very literal in what they emulate (groups w/women)--why couldn't a trio of high school feminist girls form a Minutemen-style band?

Finally watched this last night. It's not the greatest documentary ever made, but it does very movingly communicate that incredible punch-in-the-gut feeling you get when you lose someone suddenly - even after all these years, watt and hurley seem haunted and bewildered by d boon's death, and it gives the whole thing a terrible sense of sadness and waste.

it's not an especially polished film, but i feel like it works and reflects the band's own ethic. plus it's just great to see so much video footage of a band that were never really on TV and whose story was usually told in print.
