Doves 'Some Cities'

i'm enjoying this first listen, tho it's fairly predictable for them. lovely atmospherics as always, that sense of 'knowing' and expertise coming though. the single does seem to stand out as the best track tho. same old bashy drums, swarthy strings and droney touches (voice, guitar) elsewhere. fair enough.

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

What's the title of the single?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

Black And White Town

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

The vocals always seem to suck the life out of anything they might have going for them (and I really like the music on this single). That Sub Sub single with Sumner was great. They should bring in guest vocalists.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

i like this a lot. their drums are always so huge.

i admit the vocals are a little tenuous, but it doesn't bother me in the end.

i always group these guys with elbow for some reason, who are criminally underrated.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 02:39 (twenty years ago)

'that sense of knowing' ! yes! stevem's got it. I've only listened to it a couple of times, I'm not displeased. What kind of problems do you guys have with the vocals? Although I suppose I don't really think of the vocals on doves records as being vocals so much as just another sound.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 03:22 (twenty years ago)

I like a lot of records where the vocal is just another element of the sound, but on Doves records, I find it intrusive, not because it's really irritating or shrill, but there's a bland deadpan-ness (and I love some deadpan) which often seems at odds with alternately soaring or delicate sounds and arrangements. I actually think the songs themselves are very well written etc, I just have no desire to listen to the guy sing. I'll give it another shot, but I listened to the last one a number of times trying to get into it, but to no avail...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

what is the release date for this, do we know yet?

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

Amazon.com says March 1st.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

cool ta

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

I really dig the obvious Motown/Tamla influence

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

not quite as epic as Last Broadcast, but still great.

edgeev (edgeev), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 05:12 (twenty years ago)

That Sub Sub single with Sumner was great.

do you got an mp3? still need the Sub Sub albums for that matter.

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

Spencer completely OTM. I looked up from my soup when I heard the new single on TV ("This is rather good", I thought). Then his awful voice came in and yes, completely sucked the life out of it.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

i like his voice, maybe more than any other miserable male vocalist. there's a 'solidity' to it that's greater than Guy Garvey's or Danny McNamara's or indeed Noel Gallagher's for example.

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

Rubbish.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

i know you are but what am I?

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

steve, do you have the lot then? i've only heard the single once so far.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

i've got it at home yeh, slsk l8r

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

Amazon.com says March 1st.

according to this here press release in front of me, february 21. i'm quite looking forward to hearing this, you know. even if they are a poor man's elbow.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

elbow are rubbish compared to doves

haha standard indie argument 1918181

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

1918181

Is this the helpline for those concerned about standard indie arguments?

David Merryweather (DavidM), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm a little ashamed to have to admit, having dedicated the last few years of my life to the pursuit of telling everyone how wildly tedious and gigantically overrated Doves are (principally by tedious Manchester fetishists), that I'm actually enjoying the new album. Seems like they've cheered up - or at least sped up - a bit, which can only be a good fing.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

God this might be my favorite album from the last few years. I sincerely hope that they become bigger than, say, Coldplay. Jimi might not be the best singer in the world but this still blows so much music from this genre out of the water.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 12 February 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

still need the Sub Sub albums for that matter.

I've got Full Fathom Five which I can rip and email if you want.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Saturday, 12 February 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

i loved their reinterpretation of that King Crimson song. sooo good. hoping this new album is like the last, which I thought was an all around solid pop album

owen reading, Saturday, 12 February 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

yes please Billy!

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Sunday, 13 February 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

*looking*

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 13 February 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

"Moon Child," right, Owen? But is it so much a KC reinterpretation as it is picking up on Buffalo 66?

Elizabeth Haydon, Sunday, 13 February 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

god damn this is a tedious album. i need to write a review of it and i can't actually be arzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ... [wakes with start] ... ed.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 13 February 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

Doves are a curious band to me. I have and enjoy Full Fathom Five and the first Doves singles are really nice but I don't think they've ever quite lived up to what they've promised. I suppose I admire their existence more than anything else; still I'll enjoy getting around to this new album -- based on the other new releases so far this year 2005 has barely put a foot wrong, maybe the streak can continue!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 13 February 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

Anyone who's interested, here's Full Fathom Five (warning it's 76mb.)

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 13 February 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

I've had this album for a couple of weeks and cannot find much life in it. It's the first album that doesn't have any great, obvious singles. I hold that against them, and this is coming from a major fan--I've been a pretty obsessive collector of their work (not sure why, just made an expensive habit of it.) Overall, I'm sad that it's not a better record.

don weiner, Sunday, 13 February 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

five months pass...
So Ned, have you formed an opinion on the album yet? I think it is their best yet.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Sunday, 7 August 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
You can get the deluxe DVD box (as opposed to the normal CD+DVD set) for £8 in Fopp.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 24 October 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

yeah. a lot of excessive packaging just for a cd/dvd and a skinny poster though. still the album is rather nice, looking forward to getting into it more, once i get past this current pop fixation i have going on at the moment.

mark e (mark e), Monday, 24 October 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

I wish I understood why I like Doves so much, considering that Big And Important Standing On The Top Of A Cliff In A Thick Coat Gazing Mournfully Into The Distance Epic Guitar Rock normally leaves me so cold...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 24 October 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

i never got em, till i saw them @ Glastonbury this year .. and it all clicked. i became surprisingly emotional. it was quite a shock as i never expected it ..
