Even rap records you can get at Best Buy are $20-25!

Joonbugg, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

They sell cassette tapes for 17.98! And I thought Sam Goody had no conscience...

tremendoid (tremendoid), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

They had a cassette tape of PURPLE RAIN there for $19.99!

There's always Japanese kids.

Reminds me of the neo-hippie store by my place that sells $15 cassettes and $22 CDs of New Age/pre-Raphaelite influenced tripe.

Bleeker Bob's has to be a contender here.

i truly hate melody records at dupont circle in washington.
the worst is the combination of overpricing everything by a lot, and then having a selection that belies its lack of taste.

According to another New Orleans record store, the prices are so high here because of all the shoplifting. Ummmm, maybe kids wouldn't be shoplifting so much if the prices weren't completely unaffordable?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't Best Buy way cheaper than $20?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I love at FYE or Coconuts when the sticker on the CD says "Sale: $16.99" for something could get for 5 or 6 dollars less elsewhere.

xpost
I mean, the CDs are only there to lure you in to look at TVs and refrigerators anyway.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah. My point was that yeah, Peaches may have some exclusive local shit there, but they sell Ca$h Money/No Limit stuff that you can buy for $13 at Best Buy for $20-30.

xpost

Mammoth records in Anchorage, Alaska (the used cds there are, on average, $10.99US.. don't ask about the new CDs... )

Then again, the most expensive American record store seems pretty cheap compared to a typical UK store -- or, haha, an Icelandic record store, if you weigh in current currency exchange rates and taxes.

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose what I wrote was an xpost as well, but I was specifically referring to the ridiculousness of suggesting $16.99 as a "sale" price.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, the prices at FYE just kill me. i had to exchange a gift there and was only allowed store credit, but it was killing me to even spend someone else's money on those ridiculous prices. most of the new releases were "on sale" at $18.99 or $19.99. are there really enough people clueless about cd prices out there to keep these places going?

jonviachicago, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

heh, i routinely use $18.99 sale stickers for CDs where i work. like, daily. $16.99 is the most common sale price though.

Maybe Vintage Vinyl (Chicago) is trying to break into the Dirty South market?
