Okay...so I'm sure some of you have heard about Quantegy going out of business and the current 2 inch tape shortage....Anyway, my band is going to be recording soon, so I bought some used tape off of Ebay....

just got it in the mail today and on the box is says it's from the Record Plant in NYC and that it was used to master a Color Me Badd song!!!

So...am I a monster for recording over this lost classic with my shitty post-punk band?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Something tells me far more valuable masters are going to be lost in this tape shortage.

Snappy (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I am somehow jealous

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Get Bob Ludwig on the blower and let's do a SACD transfer ASAP!

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

so what's the going rate for 2-inch tape on ebay these days? and did you even try looking for a new reel, or is that just not possible to do anymore?

i'm confused about the mastering thing, because they don't master on 2-inch, do they? but if there's some color me badd music on the tape, i believe your ethical obligation is to let it be and record not over it but along with it. make it part of your shitty post-punk world.

Is Quantegy the answer to this puzzle?

Quantegy is currently not producing tape...hopefully they will find investors....people do master to 2 inch, sometimes before then mastering digitally.....

Yeah, this is bizarre.....I'm thinking a Color Me Badd/Maps of Norway split 7 inch would be crucial.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

but as not as crucial as a maps of norway vs. color me badd song, featuring both of you simultaneously. that is what you clearly must do. kinda like a natalie cole/nat king cole thing.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

now you're talking. next week we can begin addressing your image and your stagewear.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Please reference the Ice Cube lyric "Color me bad, but you can't sex me up" while you're doing this.

By the way, it'd be pretty cold-blooded of them to sell you a tape that wasn't already bulk erased.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I have no idea of the condition, but shit's getting hard to find.

I looked on allmusic and couldn't find this song on any of their albums...is it possible i have an unreleased Color Me Badd song? Allmusic won't let me on the songs tab without signing up...could some one check?

The song is called "We Can Do Tha' Nasty" according to the box. (tha is how the is spelled)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I read last week that all stocks of new 2" tape sold out in the U.S. within 48 hours of Quantegy announcing going out of business.

earlnash, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I am simply desperate to hear this song, before it is lost forever.

Can it be as bad as it sounds?

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The title is brilliant, btw.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Even if we ultimately go over it in the studio...I can dump it down and maybe get in contact with Fluxblog or something so the unreleased song can escape onto the Internets.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

you kind of have to think that they originally tried selling it previously and it didn't work!

gemm.com lists New Jack Swing band a 4 Play (awesome...) called "We Can Do The Nasty". A mint 12" copy apparently goes for 8.48 USD, so you may have hit gold...

anybody else inspired by this thread to start thinking about all of C.M.B.'s hits and realizing that the singer sounds a lot like Justin Timberlake?

And yet he apparently lacked the required JT 'elan.'

I was about to note that critics didn't go apeshit over C.M.B. but Chuck did, so no hypocrisy there.

we haven't gone in the studio yet...the tape is sitting right beside me, but obv. I dont' have a 2 inch ampex machine handy....

...i'm sure what's going to happen is that after all the fuss, is we'll load up the reel and find out that it was erased already.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

That's what I'm thinking.

Of course, while everyone's riled up, how hard would it be to emulate the sound of classic CMB?
