Official SXSW 2005 thread

I'm aware that certain people on ILM wouldn't be caught dead at SXSW, but I happen to enjoy it immensely (if your employer pays you to be there, the crowds are somehow much more palatable, BTW).

Anybody else going? Thoughts about this year's music lineup? I'm a bit underwhelmed when comparing it to 2004's talent, but I'm sure that will all change once I get down there. Plus, I ALWAYS miss a couple of bands that I wind up discovering later, which causes endless grief.

I definitely want to see the Raveonettes and Saul Williams. I wish there'd be some UK garage/grime represented. I burned out last year and had to skip Dizzee on Saturday night. I've also noticed a distinct lack of jam bands in comparison to last year, which had Particle and Umphrey's McGee.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

My band will be there. We're still waiting to find out if we'll be playing an official SXSW show, but we're definitely playing an afternoon party on March 19, with other Chicago bands.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

My hot tip if it counts any is young NZs punks The Mint Chicks - by all accounts a pretty crazy live show - debut album almost ready to come out... Does anyone know of them? - are they playing anywhere else is the states around then???

accomqueen, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm going in a writerly capacity. Yay place I write for! Boo place I work for! (Which wouldn't even help me with airfare, cheap bastahds.)

Wasn't so hot on the lineup at first, but I'm looking forward to Ash, Bloc Party, Elvis Costello, Graham Coxon, Crooked Fingers, the Donnas, Doves, the Futureheads, the Go! Team, Hot Chip (!!!), Kaiser Chiefs, Ordinary Boys, Smoosh, Stars, and Wrens.

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm still kicking myself for burning out before Dizzee Rascal's midnight Saturday set last year. I just ... couldn't ... make ... it. But I was thrilled to see Junior Senior, Last Crack, Drive-By Truckers, etc. The one thing that I always miss is the metal bands. I still haven't seen Children of Bodom and I know they played SXSW a couple of years ago.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Thursday, 10 February 2005 04:05 (twenty years ago)

ill be there! im going to be there in the "i dont really get to see other bands during the rest of the year, so its time to have fun and party!!!!" capacity.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 10 February 2005 04:10 (twenty years ago)

I look at the band list and ... have no idea who to see. Again.

Vanilla Ice (Ft Lauderdale FL)

buck van smack (Buck Van Smack), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 04:04 (twenty years ago)

go see Decibully (they're from Milwaukee, plus it's almost my whole last name in there), Chingo Bling (my current favorite rapper in the world), and Blind Boys of Alabama (because let's face it this is the WHITEST FESTIVAL IN HISTORY and someone has to balance it out)

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 04:05 (twenty years ago)

Robin Hitchcock Billy Idol Buddy Miller Ojos de Brujo

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

and for gods sake see VOLOVAN they rock

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 04:09 (twenty years ago)

It's KILLING me that I'm not going to be able to make it out there for Dogs. "London Bridge" = one of the absolute best post-Libertines/Rhythm Factory (probably a shitty description, but it's the best I got) rock songs I've heard, and the other little snippets of their stuff bears them out really well. They cannot come to LA quickly enough for me.

Apparently they're playing SXSW on the 17th, 18th, and 19th, so there's three chances to see them.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 04:10 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I'll be seeing Dogs. I also want to see Aesop Rock.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 04:18 (twenty years ago)

And VHS or Beta. And maybe Radio 4.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

who's going?

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

I'm going. And I'm thrilled about the lineup!

JC-L (JC-L), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

Later this year I will turn 33 and will still never have been to SXSW. I can hear my biological clock ticking away. :(

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 05:49 (twenty years ago)

Here's a link to sample some of the lesser known band's music (mp3s)...

buck van smack (Buck Van Smack), Sunday, 27 February 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

Crown City Rockers (live hip-hop band from Cali) are playing, they're great.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 27 February 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

wholly mp3s!

that's gonna be linked in a few blogs.

Jimmy_tango, Sunday, 27 February 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

joseph, i am much older than you, and have never gone to sxsw either! (isn't it all just mostly bad alt-country bands anyway? just kidding. actually i figure all the bands come to new york all the time, and i hate being surrounded by pesky industry types, so why would i wanna go? but chingo bling does indeed sound intriguing, i have to admit.)

chuck, Monday, 28 February 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

Fuck SXSW not actually telling us if we're playing an official show or not, which means I've had to wait to buy a plane ticket, which means I'm gonna be paying like over $400. If you don't want us to play, just say so!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 28 February 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

"because let's face it this is the WHITEST FESTIVAL IN HISTORY and someone has to balance it out)"

Hey Matt, they should have let you and I book some of the event. You'd think the organizers would finally listen to the criticism of the fest they receive every year as being too heavily weighted to indie-rock, but not yet. There are a few token groups a night, but they could do so much better. It's hard to believe a so-called hip festival in Texas would have so few acts from south of the border.

They do have some Houston hiphop-Devin the Dude...

steve-k, Monday, 28 February 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

Some more stuff i'd see if i was going: Dj Diplo from Hollertonix; The Go! Team; Revillos (reunited fun pop punk); Metal Urbain (more reunited punk); Kermit Ruffins (New orleans hornman); Mavis Staples; Alejandro Escovedo; James Talley; Andrea Echeverri from Colombia; Scarface; Turing Machine; Wreckless Eric (stiff records circa 78 act); Hold Steady; El Gran Silencio; Bluerunners(if the Replacements moved to Louisiana and played zydeco and Cajun); Jon Auer; A Frames; Dwight Twilley; Daara J. (Senegalese rap); Pete Wylie; Busdriver (rap); Los Mocosos; Harvey Sid Fisher; Skeletons; Otis Taylor; Edith Frost; Laura Cantrell...

Steve-k (Steve K), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 05:30 (twenty years ago)

go see dead meadow. heavy and awesome.

scout (scout), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

The cast of MTV Real World Austin (currently in taping) will be at SXSW, "filming" "a" "documentary"; your mission is to punch/spill drink on/set aflame each member.

Aaron A., Sunday, 6 March 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

So has anyone ever seen Harvey Sid Fisher do his astrology songs?

Are they fun? Stupid? Both? Would the Real World cast like 'em?

Steve-k (Steve K), Sunday, 6 March 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

I found some of his genius-like lyrics on his website(pretty awful):

BORN TO BE BOLD I'M THE SIGN OF THE BRAVE
ONE HERO ALONE WITH A WHOLE WORLD TO SAVE
I AM THE STORY OF HONOR AND GLORY
I'LL STAND UP AND FIGHT WHEN I KNOW I AM RIGHT
I WILL NOT BE AFRAID
I WILL LEAD THE PARADE

I AM I AM I AM THE RAM I AM I AM THE RAM

BUSY AS A BEE ON THE MOVE ALL THE TIME
CAN'T SIT BY THE FIRE I NEED MOUNTAINS TO CLIMB
I SET THE PACE AND I MUST WIN THE RACE
OUT IN FRONT OF THE REST CAUSE I AM THE BEST
SHOULD I LOSE THERE'S NO SHAME
I'LL FIND SOMEONE TO BLAME

Steve-k (Steve K), Sunday, 6 March 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

The Real World documentary is apparently about an Austin band called the Moonlight Towers. I suppose it's just as well.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Sunday, 6 March 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

This could be their lucky break. Or not.

Steve-k (Steve K), Monday, 7 March 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

hey folks - if you / your organization is throwing a party, or your band is playing a show, can you please email the info to me? i want to start putting together my itinerary.

thanks!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 7 March 2005 04:37 (twenty years ago)

Done!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 7 March 2005 04:42 (twenty years ago)

Man, I hope this year turns out well. The lineup isn't blowing my mind like it did last year. There's always the food, though, of course ... heh.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Thursday, 10 March 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

go see dead meadow. heavy and awesome.

I just reviewed that album. It was so heavy that it put me to sleep.
