Mission of Burma - "Fun World"

What kind of disco are you running, Ian?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

Can 'I Want More'

What kind of punk rock is this, for that matter?

Dadrockismus (Dada), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

"Fun World" soooo has a disco beat! Far more of one than "New Disco", certainly. Just listen to it. Sure it sounds punky and slightly proggy but Prescott's drums are unabashedly hyper-disco.

I also forgot to include Marianne Faithfull's "Broken English".

"Move Your Feet" isn't punky...it's best song Michael Jackson never made. "Shake Your Coconuts" I sort of see, but not really...

Ian Riese-Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

'Move Your Feet' is camper than MJ's best and the white-boy vocals don't help that case so much - JS's vocals are somewhat punk, albeit feelgood-dayglo punk, and it's all fairly Duran Duran*-esque anyway - plus it can fall under "what have you" in the starter post. And it seems you may not have heard the '...Coconuts' remix that I'm actually referencing.

If MJ is mentioned, I was considering trying to fit 'State of Shock' in before.

*Duran Duran - 'Girls On Film' Night Version

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

The Fall, "Two Steps Back"
Killing Joke, "Bloodsport", "Requiem"
Hunters & Collectors, "Talking To A Stranger"

These would all qualify as disco-punk. Unless they all qualify as neither.

Duran Duran famously aspired to fuse the Sex Pistols with Chic; whether they succeeded is a matter of opinion. And Rick James described his music as "punk funk" but that was fairly meaningless.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Stephen Malkmus, "Dark Wave"

Considering the subject matter, the irony is so delicious.

Broken Hipster (Broken Hipster), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Dadrockismus - empthasis on disco with that one

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Oh, didn't see that it said DFA Remix...now that's completely understandable! The white-boy vocal on "Move Your Feet" does recall Songs to Remember-era Scritti Politti, though...yeah, it does deserve inclusion.

Definitely agree about Duran Duran...some of their songs were pretty speedy affairs.

Killing Joke - "Change" and possibly "Love Like Blood", too?

Ian Riese-Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

Manhead - 'Show Me The Way', 'Sister', 'BSWD'
Steve Miller Band - 'Abracadabra'
Truby Trio feat. Marcus Begg - 'Universal Love' Tiefschwarz remix
Beastie Boys - 'Cooky Puss'
The Beta Band - 'Dance O'er The Border' (orig/live at Glasto)
JC Chasez - 'All Day Long I Dream About Sex' (pretty much)

Trevor Jackson produced 'Punk Funk' for The Brotherhood back when he was hip hoppin' as The Underdog pre-Playgroup.

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

And his best Playgroup mix is easily Andrea Doria - 'Bucci Bag'.

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

What the hell, let's mention EVERYTHING by Killing Joke! And see what Alex has to say.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

Out Hud - "Dad, There's a Little Phrase Called 'Too Much Information'"

Best song title ever?

"Move Your Feet" isn't punky...it's best song Michael Jackson never made..

I thought that was 'like I love you'.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 10 February 2005 09:30 (twenty years ago)

dudeerz, Zongamin's "Spiral" is fucking essential. that guitar solo is hawt.

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Thursday, 10 February 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

'Whiplash' and 'J Shivers Theme' also up there (tho the latter ditches punk for country)

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Thursday, 10 February 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

That whole Zongamin album was pretty ace. He has a new one on the way doesn't he?
