CTV news story

Avril got five noms, Diana Krall four, Billy Talent, Celine Dion, Feist, k-os, Simple Plan, Shania Twain, and Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra all got three each. Predictable, etc.

Can somebody explain this:
Calgary-born Feist is nominated for New Artist of the Year, Alternative Album of the Year (Let It Die) -- a new category this year -- and Video of the Year ("One Evening").

"Alternative Album of the Year" is a NEW category? In 2005??!?!?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

yeah that seems incorrect...

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

no arcade fire? (or does that not count because the singer's from texas?)

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

The Alternative category has existed for quite awhile. I think the new category is the bizarre "Adult Alternative" (Sarah Harmer, Sarah Slean, Ron Sexsmith, Rufus Wainwright, Matt Mays), which is weirdly insulting to the "Alternative" nominees, who all look like adults to me: Arcade Fire, Feist, Jim Guthrie, A.C. Newman and Stars.

Ah, the music business.

OK, CTV messed up their report. It is funny how the "Adult Alternative" nominees are the same age as the "Alternative" nominees. I guess there's a joke to be made about how Alternative music is for old people, or something.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

ah, the canadian music business

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

The Junos are a bigger joke than the Grammys.

La Monte (La Monte), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

oh yes, the rest of the music business is much more sensible

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 02:04 (twenty years ago)

This is so shameful.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 07:22 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Sarah got ADULT Alternative
Feist got Kiddie Aleternative.
I think this marks only the second time they seriously screwed up this category.

I suppose Sarah's better then that other Weeping Tile guy who did The Wall covers.

Of course the big story leading into the awards was that Neil Young had something wrong with his head.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 4 April 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

ILM loves the Junos!

Wasn't this the first time they had ADULT alternative?

I only watched the opening minutes, I hope Butt got better as the night wore on. It's not that he was bad, but just ill-suited for that venue.

Anyway, it looked sorta like the results weren't as bad as they could have been.

I completely forgot about starting this thread!

Junos vs Wrestlemania 21 -- guess which show I watched?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 4 April 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

OMG, has it really been 18 yrs since Brutus the Barber Beefcake beat Adrian Adonis?

Huk-L, Monday, 4 April 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

Give it up for another Tantramar influenced Alternative Juno Winner.

Maybe k-os will have to take back all the nice things he said about how much hip hop is being accepted at last in Canada.

Huk-L, Monday, 4 April 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

I'm surprised there was no mention of Alexisonfire in the awards. Whenever I watch MuchMusic in my Vancouver motel/hotel room, that band has videos playing every other fucking time.

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

How different is Let It Die from past Sarah Harmer albums (having not heard the new one) or past Ron Sexsmith and even Rufus Wainwright (Alternative Album of the Year winner in 1999 & 2002)?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

I'm also sad Masia One gets no props. :(

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

I thought Alexisonfire (is it "Alex is on fire" or "Alexis on fire"?) won best new group?

But Noodles, Feist has tattoos.

Huk-L, Monday, 4 April 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

And her album sounds identical to Julie Doiron + The Wooden Stars so I guess it had to win the same award.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

winnars
I didn't watch it.
