Mac OS X mp3 helper software [the thread]

I searched but couldn't seem to find it.

I'm lacking a lot of things I need right now and not finding much in the way of decent programs! Don't say I'm doomed to return to Windows again and again.

1) A good ID3 tag editor, with at least the basic functions of ID3Tag-it on Windows.

(ok, I heard of mp3rage just haven't downloaded yet, plus it's not free, have tried some shockers in the meantime). Please don't suggest Musicbrainz... it seems to fuck things up more than it helps in my case. I rarely download full albums, i still buy CD's like a fool.

2) A program to rip audio tracks from DVD's. Because I well might actually want to listen to songs from a DVD video collection on the go. RIAA be damned.

3) Well, some kind of tool to convert playlists into clean (stripping the file path information) .m3u lists would be nice. Especially whilst CD ripping with the LAME encoder plugin/script.

But I'm figuring I might go with the 'apple way' in the end and just not bother. Hard to change the habits of years though.

4) Some kind of hack to enable ALL mp3's to enqueue and not play instantly in (bloody) iTunes (interrupting the playing track) would be very helpful.

I'm sure I've forgotten something :-(

Suggestions, or if I fucked up, directions to the already existing thread much appreciated, thanks.

1) yes, mp3rage is your best choice
2) audiohijack
3) i think mp3 rage makes .m3u's also
4) just hit apple-o in itunes to add stuff to the library and it won't play

The regular version of mp3rage is free, as far as I can make out. I've never seen a nag screen, anyway.

I can't believe I forgot....

5) a download scheduler, something like download accelerator or netleech on windows.

that was the other thing I really haven't been able to find.

I'm on dial-up here and firefox just doesn't work at all for resuming downloads. I'd just like to be able to queue a few interesting mp3's up like you sometime find on weblogs & such, without it always failing at some point.

Alba, thanks for your help!! :)

going to give all this a try when I get back on my ibook.

alba is the man for mac-related music queries.

you have got yourself a copy of acquisition, haven't you? P2P as it should be. a joy to use.

I'm getting along ok with Nicotine at the moment, and I know soulseeX and Acquisition are out there if needs be. Acquisition looks smooth though! It's on it's own network? Or Gnutella or something?

There's even that usenet mp3 scraper if I fancied it.

Right now I'm still on dial-up anyway so I'm not downloading a massive amount of stuff, still surprisingly hard to keep it all tidy though.

I use the shareware iGetter. It works unregistered, though you have to wait 20 secs or something for the nag screen to clear until you cough up.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Acquistion uses the Gnutella network, yes, like LImewire, but with a much faster and better interface.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

acquisition sucks! good luck trying to find full albums and the same bitrate.

soulseeX rules!

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, I'm sure Acquisition is no match for slsk's mighty power, esp. when it comes to complete albums, but I tend to want specific tracks rather than albums anyway. And the Acquisition interface is so clean. What's with things like slsk and DC++ demanding a billion different windows? It gives me RSI.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

(incidentally, if a Gnutella user has the complete album, it's quite easy, having a found a track, to browse that user's files and find the other tracks)

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

exactly. the whole soulseek thing is vastly overrated if you ask me.

six months pass...
I can't get soulseex to work for me
