who are these bands that i've barely heard of that seem to be getting very popular? i don't read the nme so if they've been mentioned there i'm sorry.

can you define "very popular"? or is it a UK thing (I'm an American)?

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

anyone who sells more than a couple of hundred records is popular in my books

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 04:28 (twenty years ago)

seems to be mainly an nme-driven thing.

Actually, I think the Mystery Jets are legit. I haven't seen 'em live yet (as I live in the US), but I hear very good things and that next single, "You Can't Fool Me Dennis" is my favorite tune of this very young year. It's pretty readily found online for download if you do even a google/yahoo search.

Definitely worth a listen...

i don't think any of the bands are nme-manufactured, mind. i agree about 'you can't fool me..', actually. it sounds exactly like orange juice, which i like.

the pipettes haven't really been written about anywhere as far as i know, but then i haven't read the nme in a few years. they're very good as it happens, dance routines, ABBA harmonies and suchlike. and i'm not just saying that because half of them used to be flatmates of mine
what do you mean by 'legit', by the way?

I put a show on for mystery jets last night. they were WAY better than the recordings would suggest. somewhere in between king crimson, magazine and 154 era wire.

Mystery Jets are pretty fun actually. The NME will claim they're some keraaaazy buncha prog weirdos, which isn't really the case, but they're a lot of fun nonetheless. They could do pretty well. They've got that Futureheads kinda sound, albeit laced with Barrett and Flaming Lips influenced psych. I went along to a free gig they did at the Barfly. The sound system was appalling, totally overloaded, but they were entertaining nonetheless. I like the fact they've got their dad lurking in the background jabbing a keyboard and strumming the guitar. He looks a bit like Jeffrey from Rainbow...

I don't think the NME are quite sure what to make of The Pipettes cos they're like, girls, but they're a charming prospect. Ace girl group tunes with cheeky lyrics. Interviewed em a while back - a lovely bunch.

i'm tired of the pipettes hype. also don't like bands that do limited edition records even if i have no interest in buying them. two strikes.

keyth (keyth), Sunday, 2 October 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

What Pipettes hype? It's hardly on the level of Artic Monkeys.

Stew (stew s), Sunday, 2 October 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

it's small scale but on indiepop sites it is out of control. i suppose it is a matter of scale but bands i like hardly ever get this much attention. not that it is unfair but i have heard a few pipettes songs and well that last Helen Love ep was much better.

keyth (keyth), Sunday, 2 October 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

a lot of it originates with Tangents, which has some sort of influence I suppose.

Yeah, Alistair Fitchett is a fan for sure! He put out that 7" on Unpopular and you can buy ace I Love A Boy In Uniform Badges from there.

Not all the Pips songs are amazing but Judy is terrific.
