shitty rip off bands

so, according to an earlier post (and all sneering music fans) jamiroquai are a stright rip off of stevie wonder stuff. what other bands correspond pretty much exactly to an earlier (and supposedly superior) artist, who very often are 'legendary', or rather, ttoal scared cows. i'm thinking the high llamas, who always get accused of ripping off the beach boys. so whats the moral angle. are people like me, who buy the copy and not the original, and furthermore would say they 'don't like' who ever it is whos being ripped off, total scum? if so, i dont care. i was bought up on whatever my brother had, which in 1993 was jamiroquai. no one has ever owned any stevie wonder in my house, so i never heard it as a kid. consequently i dont like it.

anyway even if i am totally fake ass, i love it, cos people get so het up about this shit.

You have piqued my curiosity. I would hear more about these scared cows of which you speak.

I would like to clump together all say 500 or so of the bands that were launched right after Pearl Jam "made it," that sounded just like them, right down to the singer growling about and mumbling. It used to make me laugh laugh laugh.

I prefer Stone Temple Pilots to Pearl Jam

Actually, I think that Jami is one of the best soul-songwriters around--and it's weird how their image makes it so that none of the critics, who gush over the mediocre Angie Stone and Jill Scott, seem to notice. So what if it is rather derivative of Stevie Wonder and Earth/Wind/Fire, Blood/Sweat/Tears, et al? I hardly think that Jay or whatever his name is would claim that he's being original.

I mean, Maxwell, Chico, and D'Angelo are both about as derivative as you can get, but no one seems to mind on that count, I think at least in part because of their racial heritage and a sort of reverse racism on the critics' parts. I think it'd be disingenuous for a band to claim that it's breaking new ground if it was just repackaging the oldies, but the music itself should be evaluated too.

The only truly annoying thing would be for fans to mistake their good repackaging to be the original and then beat their chests about it. Sort of like the people who never have heard Jesus and Mary Chain and gush about BRMC.

Stone Temple Pilots had a glitzy, bubblegum element that Pearl Jam would have done well to emulate. Of course, Eddie Vedder would have considered it beneath him, which is why they're such a bore.

How about every band that made a record in 1967? They either sounded like Dylan, the Beatles or the Stones (who were quite derivative themselves.)

rip off bands are always better than originals. everyone knows that. so they came first. woo-hoo, is that the best anyone can say about them?

gareth, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think "Sex Type Thing" was the best grunge single, period.

Kris, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ah, but stone temple pilots' best single was 'big bang baby.' which was not grunge at all.

also i wasn't being a 'sneering music fan,' i was making a comment about how race is applied to playlists over sound/style. and demographics count, too; stations that would play stevie wonder probably wouldn't touch jamiroquai with a ten foot pole, for reasons pretty much identical to those i was talkng about in my other post.

maura, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah i'd not thought of that. i'm just a bit touchy over the high llamas thing.

ambrose, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I remember hearing an STP single recently that was poppy and sweet and wondered why the fuck they weren't always like that.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

revelation were/are? a horrid french ripoff of spiritualized. actually, though, it seems mr. jason pierce may have taken cues from them on his latest load.

keith, Wednesday, 9 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

STP's glitzy, bubblegum element = their Redd Kross influence, of course! Shame they don't rip them off more often.

Arthur, Wednesday, 9 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Big Bang Baby = The Stones' Jumping Jack Flash with a few obvious lyrical alterations and less skank.
