SUICIDE OF SPARKS DRUMMER

Feb 5 2005

By Lorraine Fisher

A DRUMMER with 70s hit group Sparks hanged himself in a row over a neighbour's loud music.

Norman Diamond, 53, was in despair after he failed to get the council to stop the noise - which his neighbour insisted officials had already checked and cleared her over.

Girlfriend Jane Gant, 50, came home to find him dead, hours after police visited him following a tip-off he was suicidal.

Pc Sarah Ratcliffe told an inquest: "He said the neighbour didn't work during the day and played music. He seemed agitated and started hitting the table. It was clear he had been drinking."

Police went to Diamond's house in Sandhurst, Berks, after ex-bandmate Trevor White called them, the Windsor hearing was told.

Last night neighbour Lisa Norman, 27, said: "I can't believe I'm being blamed."

Diamond's three top 10 hits included This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us.

Verdict: Suicide.

Five months old news:

Dinky Diamond R.I.P.

We just heard that Dinky passed away on 10th September 2004. Norman is sadly missed by his loving partner Jane, sisters Maureen, Daphne, Margaret and brother David, their families and all friends.
The funeral Service took take place at 1.30pm, Friday 24th September, Park Crematorium, Guildford Road, Aldershot.

Dinky Diamond (real name: Norman Diamond) was recruited as part of Sparks' British band in 1973, after the Maels had arrived in England. He played drums on three albums and was fired with the rest of the band (Trevor White and Ian Hampton) in 1976, when the Maels returned to Los Angeles to form a new band to record "Big Beat".

Out of the three original members recruited by Sparks in 1973, Dinky Diamond was the only one who was not fired preliminary.

With John Hewlett, Trevor White and (then ex-Dickie) Chuck Wagon he took part in the 1981 Four Squares project.
