Is constantly buying new music an addiction and if so, must it be kicked?

so Mrs JaXoN is starting to think i have a problem. i'm in record stores anywhere from one to three times a week (usually on the lesser end), and when i buy stuff, i usually don't spend more than $20-30 at a time (thank the lord for used cds and cheap vinyl). she seems to think that i can't quit, and that it's a problem.

i'm in my late 20s, no kids, have a good job, and she works too. i never spend more than my means, and i don't do anything unethical to get my music.

i know that i'm "addicted" but don't think of it as a problem. it's my hoby and i'm not hurting anyone. when i made less money, i spent less money.

she's also got the shopping bug, but it's for clothes, not music, so when she goes shopping, she'll spend 10 times what i'm spending, so it's just illogical for her to go shopping as often as i do.

do i need to go to Shoppers Anonymous?

You are living the American dream and yr grrl is a communist.

Matt Chesnut, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

If you're comfortable with your habits, don't change, particularly if she has a similar expensive habit. How many clothes do you really need? You're both following the whims of fashion - she's buying a new pair of black shoes because the old ones don't suit her, you're exploring new music. When YOU start getting uncomfortable (too many cds, buying something just to buy something, going completist on your C list favorites), THEN it's time to reevaluate. Until then, no worries.

scampering alpaca, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

your situation sounds exactly like my girlfriend and I (she's all about clothes, I'm all about music). as far as I know, she's not a communist.

I think the only "problem" that I've recognized is the fact that I continue buying more CDs when I have a stack of stuff at home that I still haven't listened to (largely acquired over Xmas, when I had quite a few gift certificates and xmas money to spend on cds).

Jonathan (Jonathan), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

buying something just to buy something

oh, i do this

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

am i asking the wrong bunch of folks though? aren't we all in a way like this. it's like the crack whore down the street telling you there ain't nothing wrong with what you guys are doing

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

i've found having an ipod cuts down on shoppping--with tons of music on you at all time, the urge to explore is funneled into the stuff you already have, esp. with the shuffle function.

Snappy (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

JaXoN, are you me????

oh, that's right, I don't have a girlfriend.

:D

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

I agree, the only problem would be if you're not actually enjoying and listening to what you're buying.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Man, when I was in my last semester of college, you shoulda seen me at the library every day, trying to burn their entire collection of jazz cds.

Austin (Austin), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

she's also got the shopping bug, but it's for clothes

I would avoid making comparisons, it won't stop her from saying you're buying too much. I had a friend who would put stickers on the CD and put a line on it each time he listened to the record. This would be *proof* that his money was well spent. *shrug* I don't know, ask her if it'd be the same if you downloaded the music. Or if it'd be the same if you bought fe books...

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

That's ridiculous, you don't have a problem at all. The only way it could become a problem is if you're spending too much money or time and both of those are easily fixable. Like if you just enjoy record shopping but you're spending more money than you can afford then force yourself to only buy cheap vinyl for a while. Or if the money isn't a problem but you're spending too much time away from home, try making one trip a week and spend $60 rather than three $20 trips.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

Is there an issue with storage, JaXoN? If the CDs and vinyl are all over the place, that might be what makes your girlfriend say you have a problem.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

dude, just pay cash and stash the receipts

One Who Knows (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

I simply cannot afford to buy music anymore, I've bought 3 CDs so far this year. Enjoy your freedom if you have it.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

:( adam, you want me to burn you a ton more music?

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

I always say to myself "That's it. No more! Enjoy what you already have" and then there I am at Aquarius that evening. It IS an addiction. Sigh . . . .

My housemate told me "you sure have a jones for those little square things don't you?"

I'm not sure how she got the idea that it was the jewel cases I'm interested in.

Austin (Austin), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

do you take time off work to rush to the cd shop? spend time at work thinking about what you might buy/what you just bought? do you miss connections/meetings because you just need to get through that last rack?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

Being on a promo list and knowing kind people = how to kick the habit.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

losing my job worked for me!

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

but i'm gonna sell the kids Ned.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

word of advice, don't even TRY to compare your music habits with her clothes buying habits. an ex of mine went off on me for buying 4 cd's one night, she said that would have been better spent on a dinner for the two of us. i countered by questioning her "need" to buy two pair of Ugg boots @ $375 per pair when they were on worldwide backorder. seems those were a necessity, even in Chicago where there are maybe 6 days a year you could wear them outside without fucking them all up.

jonviachicago, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

but i'm gonna sell the kids Ned.

Bold.

Jon, it seems to me you were in the right there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

yeah but clothes make her look pretty while your music probably bugs the shit out of her.

Snappy (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

come on, i have good taste. ;)

and besides, Uggs are the ugliest fucking boots ever made.

jonviachicago, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

I've slowed in my music-buying habits somehow, not spending more than $20 a week on music or DVDs. Most of my money goes into food or socializing right now (i.e. skittles and whores)

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

Do you buy both at the same time?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

TASTE THE RAINBOW!!

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

remember that scene in Armageddon with Liv Tyler and animal crackers? Well, it's my goddamned M.O. now.

Except, you know, with skittles and whores.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

"am i asking the wrong bunch of folks though? aren't we all in a way like this. it's like the crack whore down the street telling you there ain't nothing wrong with what you guys are doing"

Ha ha. Ya think? Try asking her mother if you're buying too many cd's. See how that answer compares with those in this thread.

And remember, it's called oCD for a reason.

Steel wool and a prefrontal lobotomy couldn't remove that memory. No matter how hard I try.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

Lately, I've been trying to sell off huge chunks of the discs my addiction made me buy (that's it, blame the addiction! Self-responsiblity? What's that?) I still buy stuff, but nothing helps you discipline your disc-acquisition compulsion like a child. Not only is there another fund-vaccum in the house, but my little girl is just a mosquito's breath away from discovering that compact discs make for excellent, infant-sized snow-shoes. So, in the interests of creating space and keeping my precious CD's out of her destroying little mitts, I've been selling piles of non-crucial ones to SecondSpin.Com (who rock!), ripping huge amonts of music to my iTunes/iPod, and putting loads of them INTO STORAGE (which hurts me deep in my heart),...along with scores of framed vintage rock posters (Stranglers, Plasmatics, Cop Shoot Cop, Robyn Hitchcock, Killing Joke, etc.) that I naively believe I'll be able to re-hang one day when we live in a bigger space.....or when I get another job with a proper office. HA! to both.

But everytime I impose a disc moratorium on myself, I end up snapping after a few weeks' time and splurging on a stack of needless stuff (Birdland compilation, anyone?)

Like Chicago sagely sang, it's a hard habit to break.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 10 February 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

i've figured a way to break the habit! i got a 40gb mp3 player, so now i mostly just download music and transfer it directly to my player.

works for me, anyway. i find i don't have quite as large an urge to spend money on more than one or two CDs at the ye olde record shoppe.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 10 February 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

its a necessary measure for me anyway, i've spent entire paychecks on music.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 10 February 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

There are worse things to be addicted to.

"Lead me through the days of wine and roses, one sweet day at a time."

Evanston Wade (EWW), Thursday, 10 February 2005 03:34 (twenty years ago)

i'm addicted i know... but there are loads of methadone sorts of things to help keep on a tighter budget if you ever have to reduce your spending. shit, mine's around $50-70 or so a month. BUT... i am sub'ed to emusic.com $15/mo and probably will do napster $10/mo. that and the assload of free mp3s and good college radio streams makes for plenty of ways to get the fix.

i just miss the record store. it's a nice occasion to get outta the house, shoot the shit with the record store pals, etc.

selling back stuff is a handy way to float as well. like gygax, i kinda like the "renting" philosophy. buy, try, and generally sell back quickly while the credit's high. (a little rip here and there occasionally...)

this is really part of it, searching through the racks. i don't even have to buy something to have gotten my fix (sometimes, other times it's REALLY depressing leaving without anything). when i'm really feeling down, it's sooooooo soothing to just flip through records

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 10 February 2005 06:35 (twenty years ago)

this thread could be my life.

I'm a student and I don't have a job, so I end up eating brown rice, veggie stew and Cliff Bars and use the rest of my food stipend to buy CDs... lots of CDs. I've purchased five in the past week, which doesn't seem like a lot, but that's about $65+ depending on the CDs. My gf gives me shit about it, but it's seriously a problem. I've felt better about it lately because I've been a lot more careful about which discs I actually purchase. And I've been selling crap I bought on impulse that I never listen to anymore and doubt that I ever will (i.e., Rock Bottom *ducks*).

And downloading just doesn't do it for me. I finally downloaded Deceit after a year or two of pining for it and GODDAMNILOVEITMORETHANLIFE, but I need to actually hold the CD and examine the cover art, liner notes, etc. Oh well... I think I'll be worse off when I actually get a job.

it's like, where can you go for free anymore anyway? the closest thing i can think of is a bar/pub...

msp (msp), Thursday, 10 February 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

I used to have this addiction. I broke it by being a) broke and b) discovering slsk and c) not having time to actually go do it anymore. I suppose if it isn't beyond what you can afford it isn't really hurting anyone; however, I've also learned not to argue with my wife. The clothes comparison doesn't really work, because I'd rather have my wife happy and looking good than own a bunch of music, I decided.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 10 February 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

once the kids came into the picture my wife's addiction changed from her clothes and flea market craphounding to all manner of making and buying kids clothes...

how can i compete with that?? my interest is totally selfish while she's clothing our kids. yet she still gets her shopping jollies from it.

sucks, yet i still stake hard to have a little fun money. i mean damn, shouldn't i get some fun outta all my hard web surfing work...???!?

i got friends who spend hundreds and thousands on their stupid hobbies like racing go-carts and turning their cars into jet engines... my tiny record habit is a joke right?

(i'm in denial perhaps.)

msp (msp), Thursday, 10 February 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Take your kid to the next Taiwan Deth show, msp.

I spend too much money on records. I also try to sell back CDs very frequently and LPs somewhat less frequently (if only because hauling a couple big bags to a few record stores is kind've a pain.) Basically what everyone else said: slsk kills the cravings for a time, and so do periodic phases of rediscovering old sounds. The problem is that I'm always hearing about NEW (or old) stuff that sounds KILLER and I NEED to hear it RIGHT AWAY. It makes me feel guilty for wasting the money.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

LaToya JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 18 February 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

Taking advantage of what I don't have to pay for is helping, but there are all those Latin and Arabic (and maybe avant-garde jazz) things that I'm especially interested, and am going to have a hard time finding any way to hear, unless I just go ahead and buy them.
