Hum: Classicish or Dudish?

Never see much talk of this band at all. I just started listening to their Downward is Heavenward, and its probably as good as their first CD. I like "Ms Lazarus" a lot.

So what's the deal? does no one like them (apart from Ned Raggett)? why no talk?

I'm leaning on the classic side. WAAYYYY better than the pumpkins anyway.

the song "you'd prefer an astronaut" is okay

if it wasn't for the terrible compressed-grunge-rip-off production on you'd prefer an astronaut, i'd like that one better than downward is heavenward cuz i think the songs are much stronger.

I thought this thread would be about 60hz ground hum.

Classic, classic, classic. I'm a bit biased as I was going to school in Champaign during Hum's prime and got to witness the awesome live presence many, many times. I still get a major buzz from listening to any song off of You'd Prefer an Astronaut, although if pressed to admit it I'd have to say Downward is Heavenward was a stronger overall effort. I regret never picking up their first album (the name of which escapes me now) when it was all over Champaign as I'm not sure how hard it is to find. There was a lot of good music in that city those days - Poster Children, Menthol, Sarge, Braid - but Hum was and still is my favorite.

classic.

you'd prefer an astronaut, poor production and all, is still a great album. more to 'em than that "stars" song.

(apart from Ned Raggett)?

Somehow I knew I would be invoked.

WAAYYYY better than the pumpkins anyway.

Hey!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 February 2005 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

classicish is about the perfect way to describe these guys.

electra 2000. i have this, haven't listened to it in over 8 yrs or so, but i'd be happy to depart with it (unfortunately don't have the jewel case, just the cd and booklet).

ned, well the only thing i've read about them are a couple of your paragraphs on amg, hence the invocation.

my interest in them was renewed after seeing a poster for a show of them and mercury rev from the early 90's. I had You'd prefer an astronaut at one point and liked it a lot. I'll have to find it again.

still, way better than the pumpkins. heh.

three years pass...

I don't know anything about them, but there are several reasons I can think of to listen to downward is heavenward. The drumming, the third song, the epicness of the music with the tired dry vocals, the way it surprises.

five years pass...

"the third song" I'm guessing is "If You Are To Bloom?" possibly their best song.
