I just heard Annie and M.I.A. at a strip club!

Yeah, so I was sitting there when--following a set that included Korn and the Insane Clown Posse--, shockingly (I live in the rural Midwest, mind you!), "Heartbeat" came on! Then, even more shockingly, the same girl danced next to the Piracy Funds Terrorism version of "Amazon"!!

At this point, I had to go up and tip her. With a dollar bill in my mouth, I was like, "Oh my god! This is M.I.A! I can't believe you're dancing to M.I.A.!!" Or something along those lines.

After she was done up on stage, she came and talked to me and we ended up chatting for the better part of an hour about Wong Kar-wai, the book Sightseeing (which we both happened to currently reading), and how good Before Sunset was.

Anyhoo, definitely NOT how I expected to spend a night out at the strip club!

i remember a strip club in edmonton, canada, shortly after 9/11 (we were stuck out there as all international flights were grounded - we were flying to LA when it all went down and stranded in canada for a week), where all the dancers grooved to britney and bad pop, save for one girl who danced to wall-shaking dancehall and hip-hop. we tipped her dollars (most guys just flipped coins into the plastic pint mug propped between her thigh at the end of the show - it reminded me why i've never been to strip clubs before or since) and ended up talking to her for most of the night. she was cool, and my photog intervened when a drunk guy started with the full-on hassle action, which she appreciated.

later on, we moved on to chez pierre, a lapdance place that played 'lady in red' for the girls to grind to. ewwww.

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 10 February 2005 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish i *knew* girls that even liked Annie and M.I.A. let alone stripped to it.

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Thursday, 10 February 2005 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a girl who likes Annie and M.I.A. All the boys I know who like Annie (in "real life") are gay.

Alicia Pie, Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

This is funny cuz when I first heard the album and got to "Bingo" I was all like, "Dude, this could fly on U.S. radio, I could even see this working in a strip club."

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Not that I've ever actually been to a strip club*, but you know.

(*in the continental U.S.)

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not gay.

I think.

I wondered why I couldn't ever get into Annie and now I know.

I'm a raging hetero.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw a girl dance to around the world and then drop it like it's hot, but this beats that.

There's something very Penthouse Forum for Nerds about all of this.

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I would buy Penthouse Forum for Nerds if it existed. And as long as it wasn't all Suicide Girly or something.

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for the tip Josh, I'll use it to pay my way towards that law degree that all strippers are on.

Busty Canyon (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard "Chewing Gum" by Annie in a footaction at the Arizona Mills Mall.

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Friday, 11 February 2005 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I was at a Paris Hilton perfume launch party last night and the DJ played "Ten Dollar" by MIA and "Yeah" by LCD Soundsystem. Not bad!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 11 February 2005 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Part of me thinks missing out on attending the Paris Hilton perfume launch party is something I will regret for the rest of my days. I mean, that's got to be the apotheosis of something, right?

Alba (Alba), Friday, 11 February 2005 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

It was like a dot com party with more cleavage.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 11 February 2005 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

she'll go bust.

Paris Hilton perfume launch party???

Fucking hell, so there IS glamour in being a top-flight MP3 blogger, then! Where do I sign up?

And please tell me they played Mu...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 11 February 2005 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

sometimes i wish we had more posers in christchurch

chris andrews (fraew), Friday, 11 February 2005 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't hear Mu, but I was downstairs watching the live bands play for a while. I was there because I'm friends with a couple guys who are in a band that were hired to play the party. (I wasn't the only Ilxor there, by the way. I smuggled some friends in on the guest list.)

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 11 February 2005 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't mean to imply that straight boys couldn't like Annie. I just meant that I wish I could find one. My last boyfriend liked Kylie, which was pretty awesome. Maybe he'd like Annie, too, but he was kind of ass so I'm going to keep her to myself.

Alicia Pie, Friday, 11 February 2005 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Alicia are you in Mpls/St. Paul? (umn edu is giveaway.) if so I'm sure there are straight guys who like Annie, or will when they hear her. (I know several, potentially!)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Friday, 11 February 2005 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

warning: these guys are rock critics alicia. sloppy love.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 11 February 2005 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I was at a Paris Hilton perfume launch party last night

ew, you actually went to that???

anyways, yeah, i too only know Annie fans who are gays or suspected-gays

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 11 February 2005 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Sure. I was invited and it was too weird to pass up. I don't go to that kind of thing very often, obvs. I was expecting it to be totally uncomfortable and kinda icky, but it was okay. This may be partially because I did not speak to anyone I didn't already know.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 11 February 2005 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Also: I'm straight and I love Annie and Kylie.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 11 February 2005 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard M.I.A for the first time this evening. Not impressed. Shocker, i know.

So many ads for the Stadium, strip club on D.C.'s r'n'b/hiphop station. Just read a DC rapper raving about the food offerings there. Ha
