DING!

Wonky review trying to do album justice hmnyiah.

Bingo, last I remember, you weren't feeling the album - how's about now?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 February 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

i adore this album, or at least the first half.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 10 February 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

im pretty much in marks boat. i love the first half of it...and pacific street but i kind of get bored. the wife loves it.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 10 February 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm strapping you down & making you listen to "Strays" until you Get It, son. The bridge w/ the choir-like harmonies is so gorgeous.

Favorite tracks = "The Fire Thief", "Redwing", "My Father's Waltz", "Dance With Me Now Darling", "Jackson" (!!!!), "Strays", "Pacific Street". Fucking hell "Pacific Street". The rest of the tracks can cloy @ times (either musically or lyrically), but I can't complain.

Confession: I never heard "Jackson" before this, so I D/Led the version from At Folsom Prison. Imagine my surprise.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 February 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

fire thief is my favorite. the "leave the light on" part gets me everytime. what a gorgeous voice.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 10 February 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

"redwing"s lyrics might be among the worst ever written.

"my fathers waltz" is lovely.

im pretty much done with the album by "strays".

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 10 February 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

but seriously, its not just maudlin overload that causes me to turn this off halfway through - it's one of the most ridiculously frontloaded albums in recent memory. the first five are literally the best five tracks.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 10 February 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

"redwing"s lyrics might be among the worst ever written.

Aw, come on! It's a little cutesy (OK, it's a lot more than a little), but, come on!

We are standing on the rooftops
We are circling like sparrows
We are tiny, we are trembling,
Scared of everything
But the heart is still a red wing

(Some of you might think I just proved Mark right - y'all are WRONG!)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 February 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

cheater! google, fetch me the first verse.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 10 February 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

Hey, was that you floating past the tree-line?
Hey, was that a feather in your hand?
No I don't mean to ask these questions
No I don't mean to rush your heart
I swear I saw this accidentally
No I don't mean to start

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 10 February 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

Oh, sure, quote the precious cutesy parts! I'd like to think that any mawkishness in the verses is redeemed by A) the sentiment in the chorus (that, y'know, falling in love can be scary, but let it flow let yrself go etc.), B) the way the sentiment is offered (by having the singer TRIUMPHANTLY BELT OUT the "we are tiny, we are trembling / scared of everything" bit - undercutting the fear of that revelation by embracing & accepting it).

Also, the singing goes a long way towards smoothing out any bumps in even the crappiest lines.

Just so we can all share in a group-hug (or a triple-kiss):

40 years since you washed ashore
Carried out of the sea
On the mast of a man of war
That once brought you to me

Throw your overcoat over a chair
And lay all your lazybones down
May this night keep you here till tomorrow

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 February 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Hey, was that a feather in your hand?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 10 February 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

I love Hem, but Eveningland did nothing for me.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 10 February 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Oh, sure, quote the precious cutesy parts!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 February 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

are we going to kiss soon, david? if not i don't really see a point in continuing on with this.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 10 February 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry - just goofin'. Meet me behind the shed.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 February 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

It sounds beautiful, of course, but I don't love it like Rabbit Songs. First order of business is trying to wrap my head around what they've done with "Jackson", taking all the hoot-n-holler out & making it all sad-like.

briania (briania), Thursday, 10 February 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

four months pass...
CARRY ME HOME....GORGEOUS.

Lupton Pitman (Chris V), Monday, 20 June 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

Mark never met me behind the shed! I feel unwanted.
