Help Me Think Up Indie Heartbreak Songs For My Valentine's Day Radio Show

I'm doing a special Kill Yourself Valentine's Day episode of my radio show this Monday from 11am-1pm EST on the LION 90.7 FM (you can listen to it online). I'm planning two hours of the most miserable indie rock possible. I'm looking for songs with clear, audible lyrics that describe various types of romantic anguish, anomie, detachment, HELL. "Soul and Fire" into "Katy Song." That kinda thing.

Suggestions? Requests?

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 10 February 2005 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

has to be indie rock?
"Brokenhearted Wine" - Codeine

Snappy (sexyDancer), Thursday, 10 February 2005 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Broken Heart by Spiritualized

Michael Philip Philip Philip Philip Annoyman v1.0 (Ferg), Thursday, 10 February 2005 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's two in the same vein ("we used to date, now you're with a new guy"):

David Bowie, "Letter to Hermione"
Iron & Wine, "Bird Stealing Bread"

Both of 'em absolutely kill me.

Michael Philip Philip Philip Philip Annoyman v1.0 (Ferg), Thursday, 10 February 2005 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and "Fishwives" by The Band of Holy Joy is U & K for anguish.

How about:

The Wrens: Happy

Huk-L, Thursday, 10 February 2005 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

ok yeah when I say indie I mean alt or whatever (I'm probably gonna play "Losing My Religion" at some point as a gas). It's an "underground pop, rock and punk" specific show. I don't plan on straying TOO far from that, though if something's especially perfect I will.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 10 February 2005 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Shellac - Prayer to God

Good Dog, Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

You Say You Don't Love Me by Buzzcocks
Seconded. And I don't know whether it's lyrically appropriate for your show or whether it exists on the web or blogosphere or anywhere else for that matter, but I seem to remember that the band Miracle Legion had a song called "Valentine's Day."

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 10 February 2005 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

radiohead- big ideas
(not sure if ever released as a b-side or only available live)

Don't get any big ideas
They're not gonna happen
You paint your smile
And fill the holes
There'll be something missing
Just when you found it
It's gone
Just when you feel it
You don't
It's gone forever

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

It's all about Seamonsters -- excellent indie miserablism. Then cross over to America with something from Versus Secret Swingers -- "Double Suicide (Mercy Killing)" works. Switch up the mood a little with a happy/ironic one -- like Small Factory's "If You Hurt Me" ("if you hurt me / I'll slash up your fucking tires"). Followed by my favorite duet to actually include a break-up in the text of the song, which is Figurine's "IMpossible" (she says "I don't want you to" and it's all over).

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 12 February 2005 06:12 (twenty-one years ago)

May I suggest "Lipstick Vogue" by Elvis Costello? I believe it fits the bill and, if nothing else, it will give you an opportunity for an on-air exposition of your excellent Three Stages of Elvis theory.

Ken L (Ken L), Saturday, 12 February 2005 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

BURP! Starts in a little over a half hour.

I am trying to work out how much of this is a put-on.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 14 February 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought maybe it was a reaction to having to listen to all these terrible US altrock records in a row.

Actually, he sounds kind of nervous, but I don't know what he normally sounds like.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 14 February 2005 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr Miccio you're scaring me now!

Alba (Alba), Monday, 14 February 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Ant'ny on Eamon : "Yeah, he knows what's up. He knows how to deal."

What an act!
And now he's closing the show with "All the Things She Said"!
