by Sweeney Todd, the canadian beat combo led by Nick "Hot Child In The City" Gilder who was replaced in the groop by a 16 yr. old Bryan Adams (better known to us now as the father of alt.country sooperstar Ryan Adams).

Funny, I recently had an email correspondance with a ILX member about Nick Gilder. His "City Nights" LP (the one with "Hot Child") is pretty amazing. I'd be shocked if anyone agreed with me on this. His "You Know Who You Are" album with "Roxy Roller" on it is ok, but really not as good as "City Nights". It's a pet favorite of mine, and would be perfectly happy if nobody else ever discovers it.

the sweeney todd wersion of roxy roller is better than the solo gilder one, but that gilder record with hot child in the city is pretty hot too

sean! I just mentioned Gilder in another thread. City Nights is great. "Hot Child" is a classic. His other solo records are decent but start to get by Rock America, the last one I have. I don't have it, but I assume the recent Best Of CD would be a pretty good disc. A lot of great power pop guitar work to be found on those records

Classic song. Je me souviens.

Sean, you forgot the part where you refer to him as "Geddy Lee's weird gay brother", ha ha. So I listened to those albums again and they're great! His lyrics are like Kim Fowley crossed with Steve Harley, love 'em. Nick also co-wrote Scandal's "The Warrior". Shooting down the walls of heartache, bang bang!

There's an LA-based Nick Gilder tribute band called St. Nick, composed of pop scene types. I think local writer Dan Epstein is in it. But they haven't played for a few years.

just hit me that "Je t'aime moi non plus" should be mentioned in this thread...

Imagine Britney Spears doing a cover of Gwar's "Salaminizer"

two years pass...
David Nichols (Huon, Cannanes, etc.) is a huge Nick Gilder fan, but I don't think he knows about this board.

Frankie Goes To Hollywood "Relax"... nuff said.

Ah, so here's the Sweeney Todd thread I couldn't find. Like I was saying on the NG thread, I think his cute little voice mitigates the sleaze somewhat -- "Roxy Roller" or "Hot Child" would be pretty creepy if sung by Tom Jones, for instance.
