ok it's been a while since i've seen it (six months??) and i was in the store today, still can't justify dropping the cash for the DVD but i was able to pick up the sdtrk used ... so i've got to ask ...

where can i found out which tracks were used for which scenes??

even better, is there anywhere i can find the script for "space is the place" on the internet?? i'd particularly like one that mentions which music is playing in which scene ...

of course i realize the two (sdtrk and film) were realized essentially independently but for whatever reason it's really really bugging me ... which music is playing in the "garden" scene at the beginning of the film (where ra muses "out here, time flows differently...")

also sorry but search function is not working out so hot for me today, if anybody can point me to another thread...

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 10 February 2005 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure that the soundtrack contains all of the music used in the film. You might want to search the archives of the Saturn mailing list. If that fails you might as well join the list and ask the question there because someone there is sure to know.

one year passes...
I saw the poster for this DVD in the video shop last night and I was so close to getting it, I mean I just stared at that thing for about 30 seconds, dumbstruck.

Is it good, this film? Should I go back to video store and rent this?

Trend Bucking, Bend Trucking (Bimble...), Saturday, 10 June 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

It's a miraculous synthesis of blaxploitation, science fiction, and free jazz. Set in Oakland. You think you can you handle it?

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Saturday, 10 June 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

Rent it. Sun Ra destroys a nightclub with his free jazz keyboard stylings... and so much more!

from one of the comments to the first video:

I wanted to rate this 5 stars, but something went wrong and it got only 1 star. Can someone correct my vote, please?

Jena (JenaP), Saturday, 10 June 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

WOW! THE SPIRITUAL HIGH THAT SUN RA WAS ON,SOME MAY NEVER KNOW, WHAT IT'S LIKE TO GO BEYOND THE MUNDANE,THE PHYSICAL BODY, TO SOAR,TO BE,TO SEE OTHER WORLDS, TO LIVE OUTSIDE OF YOUR PHYSICAL BODY. SUN RA,& ENTOURAGE, WAS A MOMENT IN TIME,WHEN WE FLOURISHED AS LIGHTBEINGS! WHEN VERBAL COMMUNICATION WASN'T NECESSARY,WE JUST THOUGHT, AND IT WAS. YES, GOD-MAN! PEACE! J.O.T.S.

Jena (JenaP), Saturday, 10 June 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

i almost bought this today.

Now, is my memory faulty, or is there virtually NO correlation between the music in the film and the Space Is The Place LP on Impulse? I haven't seen it in 10 years, and that was a few years before the LP was (re-)released.

Myonga Von Blounty (Monty Von Byonga), Sunday, 11 June 2006 04:12 (nineteen years ago)

no, that album just happens to have the same name. The soundtrack I don't think was issued at the time but Evidence put out a CD of it.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 11 June 2006 04:30 (nineteen years ago)

Well I watched it tonight, it was funny. Hard to keep focused on but the funny moments made it worth it. I don't own a single record of his but I'll never forget the time I saw him live. I don't remember why I was even there, I knew nothing about him, but I left in total awe.

That lady who performs with him in the movie has a great voice.

I think my favourite scene was at the employment office.

There's something about Sun Ra's performance, acting-wise, that really makes you wonder just what that guy was thinking. His manner seems to hint at something more, something that isn't said. It's like you can't quite figure out if it's all supposed to be a joke or completely serious.

Trend Bucking, Bend Trucking (Bimble...), Sunday, 11 June 2006 09:08 (nineteen years ago)

it's a really fun movie.
i dunno if i've ever seen it sober, though. does it seem any less disjointed that way?

electro-acoustic lycanthrope (orion), Sunday, 11 June 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

No, I was totally sober, actually. That's what I meant, it was hard to focus on because there's be these moments when not much was happening, so my mind would wander and then suddenly there'd be more dialogue.

Fryin' Berry, Buck Cherry (Bimble...), Sunday, 11 June 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

six years pass...

i can't believe i've never seen this before, it's so much better than the soundtrack-album.

oh cool thanks for posting this. has anyone here seen the arkestra recently? they're playing in new york on december 13 and i am not sure if i should go or not.

Pat Finn, Saturday, 8 December 2012 05:54 (thirteen years ago)

If Marshall Allen is still leading the Arkestra, GO. DO NOT MISS IT.

Looking at their website he seems to be. Thanks, I will definitely try to check it out.

Pat Finn, Sunday, 9 December 2012 01:34 (thirteen years ago)

Marshall's getting up there, but by all accounts, his approach is still age-defying.

Yeah I remember reading an article about their financial troubles in the New York Times a few years back. I'm glad that they seem to still be going strong.

Pat Finn, Sunday, 9 December 2012 01:59 (thirteen years ago)

they are awesome, go see them

Twerkin in a coal mine (Shakey Mo Collier), Sunday, 9 December 2012 02:39 (thirteen years ago)

Ok, I'm sold. I will go see them.

Pat Finn, Sunday, 9 December 2012 02:56 (thirteen years ago)

Wayne Kramer was playing with them when I saw them

Twerkin in a coal mine (Shakey Mo Collier), Sunday, 9 December 2012 03:10 (thirteen years ago)

Oh weird. How long ago was that?

Pat Finn, Sunday, 9 December 2012 03:16 (thirteen years ago)

Also, in general, what was the set like? Was it very free like the 70s shows or is it toned down somewhat?

Pat Finn, Sunday, 9 December 2012 03:18 (thirteen years ago)

Soundtrack lp is pretty great. I've had it on my bedroom 3-changer stereo for the last week so heard it several times, at least in part.
Actually better and further out than I remember it.
Not watched the film in a few years and that version was presumably a rip of a tv showing taping. wonder what I'm missing in not having the dvd, far better picture presumably for one.

Stevolende, Sunday, 9 December 2012 21:34 (thirteen years ago)

nine years pass...

I think I've complained in various places about the DVD release of this that came out in 2003 and only had the Director's Cut version that added several unnecessary scenes that Sun Ra had cut from the original version.

Apparently an Italian company put out a Space Is The Place: Limited Version a few years back that is a big improvement. It comes with a DVD that features both the original and uncut versions, plus various extra footage, a CD of the soundtrack, and a really nice hard cover book. I got all of this off of amazon for $19 and I am much happier now.
