Chloe Sevigny has taste SHOCKER!

So, Ms. Sevigny is profiled in the "My Music" section of the latest issue of abortive "music" magazine Blender (which I bought hoping to stave off boredom for a twelve hour shift here at work). Surprisingly, not only does she rattle off some inarguably exceptional albums like I Against I by the Bad Brains, but pictured JUST TO THE IMMEDIATE SOUTH of her shapely posterior (you unfortunately cannot see it in the cropped version of the same photo pasted above).....the first album by Killing Joke.

She said she was introduced to Nico at age 21 by the boys who work at Kim's. That seems a bit late to come to Nico.

x-post

If her musical taste is so exceptional, how does she defend her fondness for A.R.E. Weapons? Dating a member of the band is no excuse.

cdwill, Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

she was also in a movie where the soundtrack was completely scored by sonic youth which might also pass the alex in nyc taste filter.

"Wasn't one of them her brother?"

Well I think that is a good excuse frankly.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Her other recommendations were Good Charlotte, Limp Bizkit and Destiny's Child. And she yearns for Miccio but she will not have him because Kelly would beat her down.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

She certainly frowns upon violating international copyright law by releasing gonzo enthography cds.

Snappy (sexyDancer), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"Wasn't one of them her brother?"

Maybe it was her brother, rather than boyfriend. If that's the case, I guess I'll let it pass.

noizem duke (noize duke), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

what else did she recommend, alex? any kate bush?

Yeah, but she picks the Whole Story which is, as we all know, a compilation....which is fuckin' lame to pick.

She also picks the Smiths, Nico, Morrissey, Can (!!!!!!), Slint, Eno, the soundtrack to "Annie" (most unfortunate) and says some rude things about the Beatles..

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

From that very same Blender article she says she became obsessive over Morrissey even to the point of following him around on his last US tour (in her words, stalking him)

One night his manager told him Chloe was at the show again to which Morrissey replied "oh, the model?"

Sevigny was peeved because he referred to her as a model instead of an actress.

I'm no a Chloe Sevingy appologist, but come on guys, why does her music taste necessarily need to be derived from Jarvis Cocker or Harmony Korine or some other boyfriend or her brother? Even gross hipster girls can develop their own fondness for records.

I saw this model/actress at an Eyehategod show once.

f--gg (gcannon), Friday, 11 February 2005 03:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Chloe Sevigny has taste SHOCKER!

This was no shocker for me, because a few years ago I was at a campus book sale and found a little paperback called "Star Tunes: Celebrities Reveal the Top Ten Albums They Can't Live Without". Here is Chloe's list:

The Smiths -- The Smiths
The Smiths -- Meat is Murder
The Smiths -- Hatful of Hollow
The Smiths -- Louder Than Bombs
The Smiths -- Rank
The Smiths -- The Queen is Dead
Morrissey -- Bona Drag
Morrissey -- Viva Hate
Dirty Three -- Ocean Song
Nico -- The Marble Index

Easily the most interesting choices in the actors chapter.

f--gg (gcannon), Friday, 11 February 2005 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, why do you have to cop a plea about buying/reading Blender? It's just a magazine.

shookout (shookout), Friday, 11 February 2005 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but it's a bad magazine.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 February 2005 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm wondering why her having good taste would be a "shocker" at all?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 11 February 2005 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

...and I blame Blender for the broad-sweeping dumbing-down of so many other magazines.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 February 2005 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm wondering why her having good taste would be a "shocker" at all?

Well, I was speaking specifically about her apparent fandom of Killing Joke (many may not quite consider that "good taste"). I do. I'd have sooner pegged her for a fan of yawnsome crap....(y'know, like the movies she's in).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 February 2005 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

last days of disco was awesome!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 11 February 2005 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh good lord, no it wasn't.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 February 2005 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

OH NO, NOT DISCO REVISIONISM! HOW WILL THE CHILDREN KNOW THE REAL STORY?

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 11 February 2005 06:03 (twenty-one years ago)

But, as the title implies, the movie takes place after disco's peak. I don't think Stillman ever suggests that yuppies owned disco, but that they constituted a sizeable chunk of its audience at that point.

I seem to remember a certain monologue in the film wherein the apparent demise of disco is lamented, and some straight-laced lillywhite yupster in a tie heartily affirms that the movement in question was theirs and that it was their contribution to society (or whatever). Now, I'm no disco fan, nor was I around (well, i was around, but I was about nine years old at the time), but I seem to remember Disco being the offspring of both Black and Gay culture -- stop me if I'm wrong. The music of Whit Stillman's gang is Lester Lanin, not Sylvester.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 February 2005 06:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the character was just saying that it was the music his group of friends liked!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 11 February 2005 06:28 (twenty-one years ago)

That speach is very clearly tongue-in-cheek. Yes, disco was very much related to black and gay culture, but, like anything with comperable visibility, developed a much larger audience, including "Stillman's gang" (and certainly Stillman himself, who appears to be pretty preoccupied with disco and dancing, in general).

C0l1N B--KETT, Friday, 11 February 2005 06:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I should watch it again -- and that's not a pleasant concept for me (it's just simply not a very good film, revisionism or no). I don't remember detecting in any tongue-in-cheekiness in the dialogue in question, but perhaps I missed. That said, I don't believe there was ever even a nod or faint acknowledgment that Disco belonged to Black/Gay culture in any capacity, and I remember that sort've bothered me. It's not that I hold this stuff particularly dear or anything, I just thought it was misleading and disengenous and historically inaccurate.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 February 2005 06:55 (twenty-one years ago)

You completely misread the film, Alex. I'm not saying that it's good or bad (I liked it but didn't love it), but it was in no way supposed to be representative of The History of Disco: gay, black, or otherwise. It was essentially the same movie as Barcelona and Metropolitan, movies about rich white kids who feel they own a scene that clearly does not belong to them at all.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 11 February 2005 07:00 (twenty-one years ago)

You might be right on that point. I also found it completely stiff -- and not in a captivating David Mamet sorta way. Not sure if the rich white kids in Metropolitan didn't own the scene they travelled in, but haven't watched it in ages. Only saw Last Days of Disco once, and apart from my grievance with the arguable revisionism, I just didn't find it particularly engaging or the characters that interesting. The whole thing was quite flat.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 February 2005 07:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw her at a palace show at the knitting factory in like 1995-1996.

that was around the same time that Harmony would come into Kim's with Larry Clark and buy every new Palace release.

:::sigh::::

No, they're not. It's just somewhat rare these days to find people willing to own up to their fandom for it. Once again, when I initially exclaimed that she had taste, I was talking solely about her appreciation for Killing Joke. It's not at all surprising that she likes the Smiths and whatnot. I was using "taste" in a very narrow capacity there. It wasn't meant to be a scathing indictment of fatuous Hollywood scenesters necessarily. Although I do think that most of the films she's appeared in have been deathly dull. I was just more surprised that she evidently appreciates Killing Joke. I don't resent her scenesterism nor do I feel excluded by her. She can go down on Vincent Gallo all day and that's just fine with me.
