Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Ask about Sri Lanka and the next Cricket World Cup and say hi

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

ask her how she feels that half her audience is media fuxors, bloggers and ILmers, and that the average person on the street knows nothing of her.

um, Friday, 11 February 2005 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah make her tell us to fuck off

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

ask her how she feels about the average sri lankan person in london having no clue who the fuck she is or what she is etc. why arent they promoting her to her own community?

um, Friday, 11 February 2005 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

ask her why shes never had a vid on channel u.

um, Friday, 11 February 2005 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Ask her whether she sees herself as a political artist.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Let's ask um why he's so slhsohdsdgsgdsdgfsygdiugdsspue 3 8w-e8 s-9 w-9e7w-7 e-w

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

um, Friday, 11 February 2005 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

haha I bet she feels just AWFUL about that

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, Um, don't exclude the female nerds.

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Ask her why she dumped um

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

can i just do this interview please?

ask her how she feels about being white male music geeks in rock and indie land favourite exotic brown skinned fantasy while asian and black music geeks dont really want to shag her quite as much.

um, Friday, 11 February 2005 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

hey good ones. keep 'em coming. i still have 15 mins.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

you better give me some credit, muthauffa. im doing all the hard work for you and offering you a non white male music geek perspective for your izzass.

um, Friday, 11 February 2005 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Can you get her to confirm she's saying "Bingo, now I'm hitting a six"? And tell her that's the best line of a while (IF that is WHAT it IS) (I have a girlfriend for that um)

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

ask her what her favourite country's music is to pilfer at any given moment in the interest of white males.

um, Friday, 11 February 2005 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

SRI LANKA!

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Why don't you like white males? We're good in bed

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

you better give me some credit, muthauffa

nuff respect. what non-white colour are you, if i may ask so directly?

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Read her all the threads about her from ILX and ask her to comment.

RS, Friday, 11 February 2005 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

tell her i'm sorry i nearly knocked her over running out to answer my phone at the manchester gig in december.

i'm sure she remembers me.

piscesboy, Friday, 11 February 2005 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I was gonna put some questions in here but um beat me to all of them.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Good lord this is getting involved.

Ask her if she feels that politicized music runs the risk of reducing complex issues down too far -- or if that risk is in the end worth it. Also, does she feel that aspect of her work is now increasingly being focused on at the expense of her other efforts?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd be really interested to hear the answers to um's questions.

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

im brown. of south-asian descent.

ask MIA why she never bigs up the sri lankan grocery shop owners in london on any of her tracks or visits the sri lankan areas in east london.

um, Friday, 11 February 2005 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

do you have a brown badge?

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

do you have a white badge?

you never responsed to my query in the other post steve, about whether i could fight you.

um, Friday, 11 February 2005 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Ask her if she gives a shit about the internet

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

a variation of what been said before: ask her if what she would say to the people who put their liking of her music on hold waiting for new info on her political views, hoping for an explaination for the fast and loose usage of tamil tigers imagery in that one video. Just make he say she is a nonviolent anarchist, already X-/

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

There's nothing more rockin then groceryshops. Golly am I eager to hear these answers which are so clearly relevant to the life of a musicmaker! Hey let's make her solve a Rubik's cube while we're at it

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

ask MIA why she never bigs up the sri lankan grocery shop owners in london on any of her tracks or visits the sri lankan areas in east london.

Yes. This is key.

Miles Finch, Friday, 11 February 2005 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

um, i try to avoid physical violence as much as possible as it is largely futile and moronic, so no.

i do not have a white badge...i don't think - i'm not sure what it means?

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

dad or chips ?

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

ask MIA why she never bigs up the sri lankan grocery shop owners in london on any of her tracks or visits the sri lankan areas in east london.

um, seriously, why is this necessary? how should she 'visit' them?

Miles Finch, Friday, 11 February 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

ask her: waht is it made

eman (eman), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"Yes. This is key."

glad someone agrees with me. im not entirely serious with my questions guys, just in case you were wondering. well, apart from to steve m.

"i do not have a white badge...i don't think - i'm not sure what it means?"

what does 'do you have a brown badge?' mean?

um, Friday, 11 February 2005 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll tell you when you're older

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"um, seriously, why is this necessary? how should she 'visit' them?"

because she should only support sri lankan businesses, and invest in the community, and salute them with the brown fist (and wallet). DUH.

um, Friday, 11 February 2005 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay so you *have* been kidding.

Miles Finch, Friday, 11 February 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

steve, youre a walking white badge.

um, Friday, 11 February 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

what can i get for 10 dollar?

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i hope MIA ends up on PopWorld so Simon and Miquita can ask her that question

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

youre as white badge as they come steve. your whole persona is white badge.

um, Friday, 11 February 2005 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

'Okay so you *have* been kidding."

not everything, i think some of my questions are quite valid.

um, Friday, 11 February 2005 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

ask her the answer to the ishuffle compy on her website.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

ask if you can just call her 'Mia'.

Miles Finch, Friday, 11 February 2005 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

white badge

is it like carte blanche?

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

ask her how she feels about being white male music geeks in rock and indie land favourite exotic brown skinned fantasy while asian and black music geeks dont really want to shag her quite as much.

-- um (u...), February 11th, 2005.

the exception: Kris Ex.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 11 February 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you really salt and pepper your mango? gross!

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i also salt and pepper my flange to make it more palatable to the white man's tongue.

M.I.A., Friday, 11 February 2005 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

can jay-kid come back and tell us how the interview went? and if he asked any of the er, probing questions in this post?

sunil (sunil), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Ask her why she stole ideas from my brain of 10 years ago and then crapped on them. She'll love that one.

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Ask her when she expects to be found.

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

what was your idea; to market a sexy fantasy to the white western music geek male that involves raping a girl of inferior race regardless of her music?

brown man, Friday, 11 February 2005 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"How will you handle the inevitable critical backlash 3 months from now?"

peepee (peepee), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

thats actually a really genius marketing angle, brownman.

sunil (sunil), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow! Um is exactly what I would be if I decided to be like Ethan Trife. Except I'd have to have done this three years ago on the Kenna thread: "How does Kenna feel about white women not particularly wanting to sleep with him or really even knowing who he is? Why doesn't Kenna order tef injera from my mom's friend Workinesh in Michigan?"

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

does no one else find um wryly amusing? i would love to hear the answers to those questions!

splooge (thesplooge), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Totally funny! And less out to make you feel bad than Trife usually was.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, i would love to ask kenna or even lenny kravitz "How do you feel about white women not particularly wanting to sleep with you or really even knowing who you are?" these are the type of questions that should be in all music mags!

splooge (thesplooge), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

People know who Lenny Kravitz is!

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Um = Dan Ackroyd
Trife = Bill Murray

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

actually the correct question to ask kenna would be 'how do you feel about women in general not knowing who are and by extension, not wanting to sleep with you' and for lenny, 'how do you feel about black women not wanting to sleep with you en masse?'

i've no idea who this trife person is (unless you mean the theodore unit MC but i doubt it) but i am going to search for his name!

splooge (thesplooge), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Trife -- S. Trife, Simon Trife, Ethan -- is young, used to live in Georgia, now lives in London, likes twee indie and lots of hip-hop, and used to enjoy riling ILM up about its attitudes toward hip-hop music and/or black people in conjunction therewith. It was the kind of provocation that starts out kinda interesting but then at some point the prodding and strawmanning goes a little over the top and everything gets out of hand.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i welcome more like the um/titchyschneider/dvd person...

splooge (thesplooge), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

um would actually save my interest in this message board at this point.

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

we never see trife cos he thinks we're all idiots. quite right too.

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Friday, 11 February 2005 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

um is more like the south-asian descended calum

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Friday, 11 February 2005 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

can jay-kid come back and tell us how the interview went? and if he asked any of the er, probing questions in this post?
-- sunil (suni...), February 11th, 2005.

The interview went gloriously. She was half an hour late, but then she arrived in this hotel conference room where I got to talk to her for half an hour. She was so tiny, but very intense. She had just been in like NYC, L.A., Stockholm and what not, and she was pretty tired. She had just fallen asleep in her hotel room, she said.
Her eyes were amazing. She talked very slowly and wasn't afraid of pauses. As I am neither, the interview went by in a very unstressed and comfortable pace.

Anyway, we talked a lot about her father and the tamil tigers - she said that when word got to Sri Lanka that she was naming the album after him, she received an email from him that said "I am very proud of you. Rename your album. Dad." Period. It was the first time she had heard from him in years.

Later, (and this is where you should pay attention, um), we talked about her being 'street' or not. She said stuff like that she didn't want to accept the divison between "the streets" and "the rest of the world". She said that if she, as a poor immigrant, could make a musical carreer for herself from scratch, that was street enough for her. I wanted to ask her if she still hangs out in the Sri Lankan communities in London, but I never got around to it.

She struck me as a very bright, reflected and interesting person. We talked about lots of other stuff about her musical influences, about being an immigrant and a refugee. Her performance in the evening w. DJ Diplo was really, really great. Also, she told me that she hadn't washed her hair in six days, and that she that she was really gross. You know, she was just one of those people that felt like a real person even though you only got to know her for 30 mins.

Well, that's that in a quick kind of way. Thank you all for your inspiring questions.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Saturday, 12 February 2005 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Nicely done, Jay-Kid. :-)

now lives in London

I knew Trife visited there but I somehow missed him actually living there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 12 February 2005 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Nabisco, that was excellent. I sorta knew something like that was the trife story, but that was very concise and illuminating. You should write ILM for dummies.

OleM (OleM), Saturday, 12 February 2005 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

(Even down to the variations of the name. Positively encyclopedical. Only thing lacking, which I'm sure will be in the completed work, was cross-references:

See also: Sub-[...] at best)

OleM (OleM), Saturday, 12 February 2005 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

ILM For Dummies would be awesome.

I haven't washed my hair in six days either.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Sunday, 13 February 2005 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Sunday, 13 February 2005 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Er, not as pretty as she is.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Sunday, 13 February 2005 07:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, never lost the net connection, what I lost was the computer, so could only go online at the library or at friend's houses. My brother gave me a new computer for my birthday, so here I am.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Sunday, 13 February 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
A revive because I'm interviewing M.I.A. tomorrow and since my editor's not giving me much space, I suspect there will be room for other peoples' questions. Anyone curious about anything?

Sean M (Sean M), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

space2k (space2k), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

Has she herself burned out over the hype yet?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

when is she going to embark on "that difficult *good* record"

stelfox, Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

She's less pretty than foreign, I fear. Tho she's pretty enough, and on the topic of ILX crushes the chick from "Lost" is WAY averager, so hmm. I may be being horribly unfair. Dave, it is not our fault (nor hers) that you don't like her music. Quiet.

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

Ask her what she's listening to these days.

How do all those clowns fit into those tiny cars?

You know that Chick Tract, "This is your life" where a man arrives at the pearly gates and they play him video clips of all the times he's sinned? Who directs those, do you think? You think you could get like a Kubrick directed life if you wanted?

Do you believe we'll ever be able to tap into the minds electric impulses and be able to record dreams and play them back? How about memories?

Are you the type of person who, upon discovering that you would live forever would feel deep regret with every rising of the sun?

Do you remember the game Oregon Trail? Remember how if one of the people you were with died and you didn't give him a proper funeral he would haunt you and later on you'd have a higher probibility of having one of your wheels break.

Do you think Crispin Glover could take Dennis Hopper?
