miccio (miccio), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I dont know if the opposite of emo is really manly like Slayer, or really happy like Wham?

Then the obvious answer is Meatloaf.

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

no, he'd be reclaimed by emo. he's really earnest.

Call me crazy, but wouldn't the opposite of emo be extremely joyful non-heavy music?

Meat Loaf is kind of like a US pomp-rock Morrissey.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

MANOWAR!

Black Flag is totally emo.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Manowar was my first thought, but if you've ever listened to them, they're WAY FUCKING EMO.

Slayer, too, though with them it's one canned emotion.

Not like:

R U NUTS: Almost every song on Damaged is about Greg Ginn's feelings. He's so emo he can't even sing.

Snappy (sexyDancer), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Beat Happening.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I think from Rites of Spring's perspective, the answer was Pussy Galore.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

ABBA?

yeah you're right:

Sun's coming up and I can't decide To spill my emotions or keep them inside Go for a drive, go to the store I'm looking for something that can't be bought there I always wear a smile Because anything but a smile would make me have to explain And they wouldn't understand anyway I conceal my feelings so I won't have to explain What I can't explain anyway

PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC

known vaginatarian (nickalicious), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Next to P-Funk, Black Flag might as well have titled their albums The Morning You Died Inside, I Cried.

cdwill, Friday, 11 February 2005 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Iron Maiden. Unless, you wanna play the "Hallowed be thy name" as metaphor for inner turmoil card.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Are clowns emo?

Snappy (sexyDancer), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Demanding an Iron Maiden retraction on the basis of early pre-droid singer adventures -- remember Remember Tomorrow:

"Tears for rememberance, and tears for joy, Tears for somebody and this lonely boy."

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The Coasters

chris herrington (chris herrington), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasted Years off Somewhere In Time is kinda "emo Maiden":

From the coast of gold across the seven seas
I’m travellin’ on far and wide
But now it seems I’m just a stranger to myself
And all the things I sometimes do
It isn’t me but someone else
I close my eyes and think of home
Another city goes by in the night
Ain’t it funny how it is,
You never miss it ’til it’s gone away
And my heart is lying there
And will de ’til my dying day
So understand
Don’t waste your time always
Searching for those wasted years
Face up... make your stand
And realise you’re living in the golden years
Too much time on my hands, I got you on my mind
Can’t easy this pain so easily
When you can’t find the words to say
It’s hard to make it through another day
And it just makes me wanna cry
And throw my hands up to the sky

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The B-52s.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, a winner!
I'm jumping on the pile re Black Flag, too -- godfathers of emo.

briania (briania), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

B-52s are too self consciously weird to be the least Emo band of all time.
Clearly the answer is the Happy Mondays.

Ozbash (stickthrower), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Emo people are self-concious and weird, but absolutely not self-conciously (in the sense of deliberately or celebratorily) weird. And I oughtta know, 'cause I invented emo.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Abba yes if it wasn't for all the divorce songs like Day Before You Came, Winner Takes It All and Name of the Game. The Visitors album is the dark flipside to all the happy songs like Dancing Queen or Thank You For the Music.

Totally unselfconscious and happy? Ladies and gentlemen, I give you The Shaggs!

Anal Cunt is too.

I second Ted Nugent.

John Fredland (jfredland), Friday, 11 February 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

The Anal Cunters. I would go with that but poetry like 'you look divorced' CARES. The Cunt were concerned.

What about The Didjits?

Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountain Dog (Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountai), Friday, 11 February 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

No I meant that AC were secretly emo. Its so obvious!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 11 February 2005 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus was Emo - 'Why hath Thou forsaken me' etc.

thee music mole, Friday, 11 February 2005 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

The Geeg. Allin. Possibly hated 'emo' but a school of thought could possibly crown the shit caked champion the King. Of 'Emo'.

Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountain Dog (Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountai), Friday, 11 February 2005 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Black Metal is pretty much emo for Vikings.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 11 February 2005 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Elektroklash, generally speaking, seems as distant from emo as possible. Indifference and being cold is the key signature of a vocal delivery.

Miss Kittin & The Hacker's "Frank Sinatra" for example. There are many more.

donut christ (donut), Friday, 11 February 2005 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Kraftwerk on the other hand are coldly emotional, if that makes sense.

"How Could I Have Been Such a Fool" is definitely emo. Ironic, but still emo.

Eno is not emo though.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Sunday, 13 February 2005 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Also from that same Zappa album: "I ain't got no heart", "Go Cry on Somebody Else's Shoulder" and "You Didn't Try To Call Me" are all completely emo.

latebloomer: HE WHOM DUELS THE DRAFGON IN ENDLESS DANCE (latebloomer), Monday, 14 February 2005 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck, it's so depressing to think that Kraftwerk succumbed to the emo. Still the only examples here seem to come from Computer World and Electric Cafe so at least early Kraftwerk was emo free. And I still see no challenges to the claim that Eno is not emo.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 14 February 2005 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
It struck me last night as I felt a little emo that Luke Haines maybe the least emo person ever. So I stopped listening to The Auteurs and one man's burning hatred of well, everything. I think also the repression is important.
