Jay-Z on Hot 97

This is a few days late, but after kicking a SICK freestyle, having the whole studio in awe, etc., he just tossed off something like

"Had to take off the blazer/loosen up the tie/duck into the phone booth/cause Superman is alive"

He's a fucking genius.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

as usual with jay-z i have no idea what is so "genius" about that lyric

live from uzbekistan, Friday, 11 February 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

LINK?

The layers. Obviously it's him comparing himself to Superman, but it works on a couple of levels:

1) He's now CEO of Def Jam records, but he's still "Superman" underneath the suit (mild mannered clark kent, etc.)

2) "Superman is alive" -- this references the Death of Superman. Jay-Z *retired* recently, but he's still the best.

I'll close-read ANY Jay-Z lyric, bitches, so don't step!

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

I can't find a link to it though. I heard it on the radio the other night.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Scroll down a bit for the link. It has shitty sound though -- sounds like someone held up a tape recorder to the radio.

From another site:

You plan to bang, I plan to bang too
You playin the games, I'm seein the thing through
You sayin my name to entertain ya crew
I don't play no +Games+, when shots exchange you're through
Fresh off probation I gotta charge to throw away
My lawyer say for eighty large it'll go away
And that ain't no money to Jay
So you could get it broad day on broadway while TRL's tapin'
You playin the game you know you aight gon win
Quit playin them childish games with grown men
I don't give a fuck about cars or chrome rims
I got apartments you could put your home in
Can I live?

"Do not put my verse on yall records dog"

The boy trap money like bear hunters
Dear Summer, I know yall gonna miss me
Couldn't go together like Nike Air's and Swiss T's
S. Dot's and Polo Fleece's, purple label shit with the logo secret
Gimme a couple of years shh I might just sneak in
A couple of words and like Peaches & Herb we'll be reunited and it feel so hood
Got the whole world sayin "how he still so good"
Or I do this in my slumbers Summer
I ain't none of these half-ass new comers, you know how I do Summer
I drop heat when you bring the sun up
The combo make niggas act up I pick the gun up
Niggas back up they know I ain't no fronter
I don't talk shit I just flip and "Un" ya
Sorry Lance I'm just tryna advance my quotes
I ain't makin you the butt of my jokes
Let's not stray from what I came to say
The mob'll love it, think we need some time away
They say they love it
You should let it out the cage, if not fuck it
If it comes back you should know it's there to stay
It's tuggin, at my heart but this time apart is needed
From the public, should've gave me the Pulist
But instead gave me they ass to kiss
But you know me thuggin till the casket dips
But still shine light down on all my peers
I know they weirdddd
Some queer, I still want them to share
And all the success I receive, I know you can't believe
I still love'them but they don't love me
They like the drunk uncle in ya family
Though they lame it's still the same still you love'them the same
Like when cats make subliminal records
Know they can't directly direct it at me I don't respect it
And you don't really want it with Hov for the record
I put a couple of careers on hold you could be next kid
You keep entering the danger zone
You gonna make that boy Hov put your name on a song
If you that hungry for fame cocksucker c'mon
Say when, take ten paces and spin
But on another note I'm bout to take another va-cay on another boat
Goddamn a mufucka rode his way out the hood
And I pray that I stay out for good
But any day you know a *racist slang* could try to play like he Suge
Then I gotta pull it like Dutch Schultz
You pass the Dutchy I'll blast you trust me
Niggaz can't fuck with me
I'm in a good mood yall lucky
I'm in a good groove
And I ain't tryin to mess my thing up
But I will lay down a couple green bucks, get you cleaned up
Non pulp-fiction, Cult 4-fifthin
Young niggaz that blasphemy (blast for me), no religion

I had to take off the blazer, loosen up the tie
Step inside the booth, Superman is alive

Nice.

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

yeah this is hot.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

That Vast Aire track rollie put up is fucking heat too.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Hehehe. The man is indeed The Man.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

I can't tolerate bragging about bling from anyone else, but it's how he does it. Jay-Z is all about excess.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

it's a good lyric, but it hardly needed unpacking.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but this guy didn't get it.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

"I can't tolerate bragging about bling from anyone else, but it's how he does it. Jay-Z is all about excess."

My thoughts exactly.

kevin says relax (daddy warbuxx), Friday, 11 February 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

"I don't give a fuck about cars or chrome rims
I got apartments you could put your home in"

Maybe he's starting to see himself as old money and showing disdain for noveau riche

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 11 February 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

"I don't give a fuck for y'all blingin' bee-yatches/
I'm rockin' an iced-out monacle, ascot, and tweed jacket"

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 11 February 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

The lines around the uncle thing are great -- I love jay-z flow when it feels like its getting out of hand then coming back under control again, and also those parts where he's just effortlessly moving between rapping and conversation.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 12 February 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

I love that even Jay-Z has a drunkle.

daria g (daria g), Saturday, 12 February 2005 05:39 (twenty years ago)

Doesn't read like an improvised freestyle, I bet he had a lot of it worked out beforehand.

Still, dope as fuck.

Austin (Austin), Saturday, 12 February 2005 06:54 (twenty years ago)

very few pro rappers "freestyle" even when it's labelled as such, especially Jay. at this point it usually means they're doing a written verse over the beat from someone else's record, and/or an unstructured verse without hooks and 16 bar sections.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 12 February 2005 07:04 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I know. But there's still something incredibly exciting and undeniably different when you hear say, some Project Blowdian improv fiend go all out without a plan, and I'd personally like for the word 'freestyle' to continue referring to that. "Radio Exclusive" or whatever is fine for what was posted upthread.

Austin (Austin), Saturday, 12 February 2005 07:23 (twenty years ago)

Jay-Z claims that he never writes any of his rhymes down at all. He says he just writes them in his head and then brings them in

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 12 February 2005 07:51 (twenty years ago)

So if that's true, it doesn't seem a longshot that he also improvs the lyrics.

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 12 February 2005 07:54 (twenty years ago)

I shouldn't have said "written", I know Jay doesn't write his rhymes down. I just meant, they're preconceived and memorized before he gets in front of the mic. in fact, I'd daresay that his methods make him an even more likely candidate for never/rarely actually improvising a freestyle -- his memorization skills are extremely well honed, which means that anytime he's put on the spot to drop a new rhyme for a mixtape or a radio station, he's got something structured and rehearsed and ready to go.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 12 February 2005 07:59 (twenty years ago)

"But still shine light down on all my peers

!!!!(in a good way)

ct, Saturday, 12 February 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Saturday, 12 February 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

I doubt he prepared the entire thing beforehand, but I wouldn't be surprised if he comes up with certain parts in advance and throws them together, sort of like "licks".

People who freestyle say it's just something you become good at after years of practice. You make up rhymes for years and you get better and better at coming up with it on the spot. I don't think it's impossible that Jay could have made that up on the spot, since he's basically the best rapper alive. Miles Davis didn't write down his solos either.

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 12 February 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

seriously, it's better than the emcees who went on Rap City and fumbled around verses from their albums, right? Elzhi from Slum Village did the same verse he did from "The KGB" by Binary Star on Rap City. it's the only good verse he's got, yeah, but come on, integrity, etc.

i'm not expecting the guy to style like mikah 9 with his freestyles, but come on, name some other new york rappers who are confident enough to walk into Hot 97 and do 32+ bars off the top.

"Non pulp-fiction, Colt 4-fifthin
Young niggaz that blasphemy (blast for me), no religion"

that is actually hot as shit.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Saturday, 12 February 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

Oh shit yeah it's a dope verse. And I have no doubt that big chunks of it were inviented on the spot. But I think other parts look pre-prepared is all.

Austin (Austin), Saturday, 12 February 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

he doesnt really ride the beat, this is like some weird spoken word, sub-vast type flow.

um, Saturday, 12 February 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

the best thing about this song is that Jay promises to kill the Game's career! If only he actually could. Pointing out how little risk the Game has actually taken is also OTM.
