It COMPLETELY BOGGLES MY MIND that this was never done...I must be slipping...and because the roughly twenty-eight Killing Joke-related threads already set in motion throughout ILX JUST ARE NOT ENOUGH!

1. "Eighties"....now and forever.
2. "Follow the Leader"
3. "Wardance" (single version)
4. "A New Day"
5. "Harlequin"
6. "Blood On Your Hands"
7. "Money Is Not Our God"
8. "Let's All Go (To the Fire Dances)"
9. "Chop Chop"
10. "Darkness Before Dawn"

wardance = no.1 on my list

Love Like Blood

Grell (Grell), Saturday, 12 February 2005 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, what's your second favorite band of all time?
Just curious.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Saturday, 12 February 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I'd like to do one of these, but I'm really bad when it comes to compiling lists of 10 songs. With albums I can just about manage it sometimes, but songs give me problems. I mean, you know, I can say "the whole of Night Time" but god, how boring is that? [check for the last thread Scott Seward started about Felt if you don't believe me that I have this problem]

I can reveal that vinyl-wise, I did have the first album (recall listening to it during my senior year of high school), I did have What's This For (don't remember much about it), and of course I did have Fire Dances and recall liking it quite a bit but haven't heard it in zillions of years (the CD is in the mail btw). Revelations I never actually had. Of course I love Night Time & Brighter Than A Thousand Suns. Bought Outside The Gate when it came out, didn't like it and sold it, which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. About 2 years ago I did reinvestigate KJ and got the three compilations Laugh, Wilful Days & Unperverted Pantomime (really love the capital radio version of "Change" on that, btw). Oh - I also did give their last album a listen but found the style really wasn't my cup of tea.

Anyway, here's a compilation I made of the tracks I liked best off the three compilations:

1. Are You Receiving
2. Nervous System
3. Turn To Red
4. Change (Capital Radio)
5. Follow The Leaders (original)
6. Pssyche (live Ha! EP, 1982)
7. A New Day (I had heard this song a long time ago, but it was hard to find in those days)
8. Wilful Days
9. Ecstacy (extended mix)
10. Requiem (I still think this song is better than Wardance or The Wait, but it seems like most people would disagree)
11. Me Or You
12. Sun Goes Down
13. Animal (live 1980)
14. Malicious Boogie (live 1980)
15. Nuclear Boy (live 1980)
16. The Maddening Crowd

Also, I seem to remember Bloodsport from the first album being particularly good.

Look, can I please just post the whole of Night Time as my POX?
Please? Oh okay so there's only 8 tracks. Let me give it some careful thought about what to put as the other two and I'll get back to you.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 13 February 2005 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I really think Jaz would want us to make this a POXIII....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 13 February 2005 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, that was in no particular order, just kinda what came to mind as I was typing. Actually listened to 4 of their albums at work yesterday for the first time in a while.

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Sunday, 13 February 2005 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, please, let's not hold anyone to any kind of order here. This whole thing makes me want to tear my hair out as it is.

Someone mentioned Rubicon! I feel so much better now.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Sunday, 13 February 2005 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I did. It rocks, and I dare say you should run -- don't walk -- to go fetch thyself Killing Joke...For Beginners as it includes the pleasingly raw-er rendition of "Rubicon" (the Chris Kimsey mix)....plus some lovely artwork by Mike "Malicious Damage" Coles.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 13 February 2005 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently Killing Joke were more photgraphed than the Beatles.

Aaron A., Sunday, 13 February 2005 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

No they weren't. Quite the opposite, in fact. Their initial mission statement called for "total anonymity".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

16. The Maddening Crowd

Whoops! I knew that didn't seem quite right. Apparently I wrote it down on my CD wrong. It's the "The Madding Crowd" of course.

I'll consider that Beginners comp. Is Mike Coles the one who did that breathtaking painting of Jaz on the back of Unperverted Pantomime?

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 14 February 2005 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I downloaded "Hollywood Babylon" a long time ago. It kicked ass. Out-Ninned Trent Reznor. Perhaps, it was a remix, but still I would put that on my top list. Where the hell was that track released? Otherwise, who knows, they're all great choices.

-rainbow bum- (-rainbow bum-), Monday, 14 February 2005 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

In no particular order:

The Pandys Are Coming
Unspeakable
Pssyche
The Fall Of Because
The Hum
We Have Joy
The Wait
Frenzy
Money Is Not Our God
Requiem

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 14 February 2005 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

And here's me thinking that this Can't be an Alex in NYC thread as
1) he'd have done this already
2) that's it.

I'd join, but I only know about 4. Here goes anyway...

1) Follow the Leader
2) Brilliant
3) Empire Song
4) the other b-side, whatever that was.
5) Oh Love Like Blood as well.
6) Eighties
7) ummm.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 14 February 2005 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

8) Chop Chop?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 14 February 2005 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"Their initial mission statement called for "total anonymity"."

LOL! Did they forget to tell Youth about that bit?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 14 February 2005 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Or even Jaz?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 14 February 2005 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Mike Coles the one who did that breathtaking painting of Jaz on the back of Unperverted Pantomime?

If by the despondent Jester, well, yes he did the design, although I'm guessing he appropriated the artwork from somewhere (sort've his specialty).

The "total anonymity" thing sort've went the way of all flesh once Youth left, actually (the first album to feature any pix of band members was Fire Dances, their fourth).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 February 2005 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

If by the despondent Jester

Okay fair enough, I guess it doesn't have to be Jaz necessarily. But I wouldn't have thought of it any other way. Power of suggestion and that.

As for the anonymity, I still can't see why someone would say they were "photographed more than the Beatles"? Perhaps it was just a joke, but I can't say I feel like I've been inundated with KJ photos in my life. Ha ha - maybe I haven't hung around this board long enough!

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 14 February 2005 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, my beloved cache of Joke photos (courtesy of the Gathering's Mad Ani site, An Irrational Domain) has since been taken down :::::::: moment of silence, please :::::: so my Joke pic posting resources are limited these days).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 February 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw, that's sad. *big frown* :(

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 14 February 2005 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

It will supposedly be back. Not holding breath.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 February 2005 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the exhaustive Martin Hannett site went down, too. It's no fun.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 14 February 2005 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I listened to "eighties" yesterday. it sounded like "come as you are." wasn't impressed in any way.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love to comment, but I'm too busy trying to decide which suit to wear to your funeral.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

*smiles and hugs alex in nyc*

Star Cauliflower (Star Cauliflower), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 04:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, that was just too classic. Surely a personal best.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 15 is:

fey • \FAY\ Audio icon • adjective
1 a chiefly Scottish : fated to die : doomed b : marked by a foreboding of death or calamity
2 a : able to see into the future : visionary b : marked by an otherworldly air or attitude c : crazy, touched
3 a : excessively refined : precious *b : quaintly unconventional : campy

"I'd love to comment, but I'm too busy trying to decide which suit to wear to your funeral."

Yeah, right, you tell 'em Alex: everyone knows that both of those songs very obviously sound like "Life Goes On" by The Damned; which also very obviously predates them both. Right?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

This is ground well covered.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)
