This is quite good.

No, seriously.

*arches eyebrow*

...how?

THat should be the video. It may help if you don't look at it whilst listening...

It's still recognisably Kelly Jones singing, but they've pulled him in, hard. And they've got some lovely electronic bits as backing. And they've made the guitars all Wicked Game-esque.

This really is quite good. The ending's a bit rubbish. And it sort of sounds a little like Hefner's 'I Took Her Love For Granted', a bit. But it really is quite good.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 12 February 2005 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm on the third listen and my universe is imploding because of the goodness. Electronics, insistant Stills-esque guitars and something wholly simplistic and infectious about it.

Goddam them!

Abby (abby mcdonald), Saturday, 12 February 2005 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

A fine idea!

*listens* Ah. How krafty of them.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 12 February 2005 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Better than everything else they've ever done, I'll grant you that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 12 February 2005 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

(And Abby I understand you're the person to thank for introducing Parvati to the board. Rah!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 12 February 2005 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Abby and Will, you're both mad.

It is the best thing the Stereophonics have ever done but this still means it is worse than anything anyone else has ever done. And they may have restrained the awful Jones man somewhat, but no amount of restraining short of removing has vocal cords will ever be enough.

The middle eight is the most dreadful, plodding thing.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 12 February 2005 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The best Stereophonics song is "Traffic", which is a solid 4.5/10.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 12 February 2005 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard this on the radio at work and thought this sounds like some one trying to sound like razorlight, then kelly jones came in, unmistakable, like rod stewart being impaled on a walrus and it all fell in to place.

elwisty (elwisty), Saturday, 12 February 2005 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

It sounds like Warm Jets crossed with Readymade. Maybe.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 12 February 2005 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

it sounds like a desperate attempt at "relevance" with the nme crowd

elwisty (elwisty), Saturday, 12 February 2005 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds custom made for US airplay...

mnm, Saturday, 12 February 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

When I first heard this I thought it was Soulwax until I realised who was singing.

I'm useless with words and voices and lyrics and stuff like that, I know.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Saturday, 12 February 2005 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

the Stereophonics are simply the worst thing that has ever happened to music. not a very constructive comment, i know, but this is something i feel very strongly about.

Lex OTM

i mean it's not that bad, it sounds like Interpol! and a little like 'Kids In America' for about 3.76 seconds at the start

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Sunday, 13 February 2005 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

it sounds like Interpol!

Hmmm.

(I do agree it's clearly them going, "Guh! We need some American retirement money!")

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 13 February 2005 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, this is some good stuff!! I thought this band was supposed to really suck! Are all their songs this good?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 13 February 2005 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

TS: Kelly Jones rasping like Rod but without the cheeky charm vs Kelly Jones affecting cold aloofness but not quite convincingly enough

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Monday, 14 February 2005 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

It's tolerable, but the lyrics are mind-numbingly AWFUL. It does sound a bit 80s-esque in a bandwagon-jumping kind of way. Local Boy in the Photograph is, and always will be, their best song.

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Monday, 14 February 2005 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

On this first single from new album 'Language, Sex, Violence, Other?',
Stereophonics plod further down the middle of the road towards Dad Rock City USA, and Kelly Jones' voice is now oh so very American.

Well I've got news for you Kelly, you're embarressed you're Welsh? Well so the fuck am I! Go off to America and get shot, in the face, now. But don't die immediately. Drag on for a few years of slow pain and remorse, get bitter, let your pain and acrimony eat away at your heart, the medication eat away at your mind and the resentment gnaw chunks off your soul until you're eaten up, piece by tar black fucking piece.

This single will sell well in all kinds of record shops (yes, yes Kelly, 'stores'). To cretins.

mei (mei), Monday, 14 February 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

enough Dakota, where's Delakota?

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Monday, 14 February 2005 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Look, fuckers, just because someone's doing straight doublestop eighths does not make them like Interpol. It makes them like about 5,000 bands. It's just a rock thing, OK?

I have to admit this isn't doing it for me, and I don't think it's Kelly, as I don't have any particular notion of the 'phonics one way or the other (aside from "music nerds hate them"). I think the melody just ain't that hot. But let me get a better-sounding version than the audio from the video provides me.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 14 February 2005 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Interpol was the first thing it reminded me of. this doesn't mean anything really tho you're right.

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Monday, 14 February 2005 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like Dakota. Really, really like it. The album is still a load of hoary old rock bullshit, sadly. Track 3 is some rather unfortunate funkrock, for example.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 14 February 2005 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Whatever did happen to Delakota? "C'Mon Cincinnatti" was a great, great song, but sadly overlooked.

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 14 February 2005 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The Rock was even better than C'Mon Cincinnatti.

They pretty much vanished, sadly. One single came out a year after the album, but was average at best. Cas plays bass with The Streets from time to time I think.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 14 February 2005 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, is that not Morgan Nicholls of M Organ fame?
