How many Pazz and Jop album winners from the past 30+ years did you listen to at least once over the course of 2004?

I came up with just 6:

Bob Dylan and the Band/Basement Tapes
The Clash/London Calling
The Clash/Sandanista!
Prince/Sign 'o' the Times
Bob Dylan/Time Out of Mind
Wilco/Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

I think I may still at least own most of the rest of the past winners, but I don't know the last time I considered playing, say, "Exile in Guyville," "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road," "Odelay," "Live Through This," "Play," etc. Though admittedly I feel like putting several of them on right now (if not these records in particular).

Just curious what everyone else comes up with.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Saturday, 12 February 2005 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Plenty of'em, scarily enough:

"Born in the USA"
"Sign 'O' The Times"
"London Calling"
"Live Through This"
"Odelay"
"Murmur"
"Graceland"
"Little Creatures"
"3 Feet High & Rising"

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Saturday, 12 February 2005 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I've heard bits of Thriller, London Calling and Stankonia out and about and I own all three, but I've not put them on myself in the last year (it's also possible I heard the second Elvis Costello record--which I also believe I own although I might have sold it.) The only two records which won and which I know I put on in the last year were:

It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
Three Feet Hight and Rising

Everything from the 90s is not my cup of tea.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 12 February 2005 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, add "Murmur" to my list. Maybe "Graceland," too.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Saturday, 12 February 2005 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Murmer didn't win? Thriller won!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 12 February 2005 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

3 Feet High and Rising

roberton, Saturday, 12 February 2005 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing mentioned so far.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 12 February 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post Well, someone else said "Murmur," but it not winning explains why I didn't put it in my initial list. I did notice a whole lot of great second place finishers I did listen to.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Sunday, 13 February 2005 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Was Live Through This really voted album of the year when it came out?!

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 13 February 2005 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

1994 was a strange year.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 13 February 2005 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I've listened to SOTT lots in the past year. and Live Through This at least once. and I listened to Imperial Bedroom the other night although it's very nearly my least favorite EC album. probably This Year's Model at some point too. there were also points where I thought about listening to Stankonia and Odelay but just couldn't force myself to do it.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 13 February 2005 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

In '04 I sold some P&J winners from the past 30 years:

Stankonia
Odelay
Time Out of Mind
Murmur

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 13 February 2005 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Live Through This
Never Mind the Bollocks

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Sunday, 13 February 2005 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there a list of the winners from the past 30 years somewhere? I didn't find one on the site.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 13 February 2005 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I intentionally listened to:

Speakerboxx/The Love Below
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Stankonia
Odelay
Live Through This
Exile In Guyville
Nevermind
It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back
Sign O The Times
Little Creatures
Thriller
Sandinista
London Calling
This Year's Model
Songs In The Key Of Life

The only ones I listened to all the way through were London Calling and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. I listened to The Clash, Outkast, and Wilco a lot more than any of the other artists on the list.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 13 February 2005 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Murmur never won, by the way. It came in #2 after Thriller.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 13 February 2005 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

basement tapes
this year's model
london calling
imperial bedroom
sign o the times
nevermind
speakerboxx/the love below
college dropout

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 13 February 2005 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Sandinista won the P&J!?!?! What the hell happened? What about Remain in Light? Or Get Happy? Dirty Mind? Holy crap. Not to mention Closer, but I guess that's not really too P&J friendly haha

poortheatre (poortheatre), Sunday, 13 February 2005 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

LIVE THROUGH THIS WON ALBUM OF THE YEAR?!?!?!??!?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 13 February 2005 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

sandinista won the 81 p&j (so it beat trust and controversy); came out late late 80, wins 81 p&j; cf. the mind of mannie fresh - came out late late 04, wins 05 p&j.

a banana (alanbanana), Sunday, 13 February 2005 06:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Sandinista is a sprawling mess, but it's got "The Magnificent Seven," "Police On My Back," "Somebody Got Murdered," "One More Time," "The Call Up," "Kingston Advice," and "Broadway" on it. The win is totally justified!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 13 February 2005 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Out of that bunch, I've only heard "To Bring You My Love" (in full) over the past year. And maybe "Car Wheels ...", I can't remember for sure when I last heard it.

Has anyone listened to the Arrested Development album in the last year?

Was Live Through This really voted album of the year when it came out?!

Sundar, eye magazine's Canadian music critics poll (which is more or less modeled on P&J) also picked "Live Through This" as #1 for 1994.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 13 February 2005 06:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life won in 1976; Dylan's The Basement Tapes won sometime before then. Which leaves one (or two) unaccounted for (and I'm skeptical about Who's Next, unless 1971 was the parenthetical year (1974 was the first nonparenthetical, even though it's in parentheses in this post).

Live Through This won '94 in a landslide, deservedly (though I didn't think so at the time). Had almost twice as many points as second-place Pavement.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Sunday, 13 February 2005 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The 1974 winner was Joni Mitchell's Court & Spark

the ones I've listened to:
London Calling
Sign 'O' the Times
[the best album ever to win the poll]
Nevermind
"Love and Theft"
Speakerboxxx/The Love Below
The College Dropout

the two I'm guessing might get zero votes on here: 1979, Squeezing Out Sparks, and 1992, Arrested Development

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Sunday, 13 February 2005 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I know I listened to "Squeezing Out Sparks" in 2003! I put "Local Girls" on a mix CD. 2004 was the year that marked me finally selling my (wife's) copy of Arrested Development.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Sunday, 13 February 2005 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Court and Spark appears to be the only VVinner I listened to in '04...

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 13 February 2005 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Out of that bunch, I've only heard "To Bring You My Love" (in full) over the past year

Pretty much the same. I can't find the word for that full list of winners but 'meh' comes pretty damn close.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 13 February 2005 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone listened to the Arrested Development album in the last year?

I have! I lurrve that "Tennessee" song. Why does that record get such a bad rep nowadays? And why oh WHY do people always say that the only reason that record became popular was because it was released during the '92 LA riots? Huh?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 13 February 2005 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Nevermind
It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back
Songs In The Key Of Life
Court & Spark

chris herrington (chris herrington), Sunday, 13 February 2005 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Not saying I listened to the whole thing, but I put all these on at least once:

Kanye West - The College Dropout
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville
Nirvana - Nevermind
De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising
Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back

Joni Mitchell - Court & Spark (1974)

Mark (MarkR), Sunday, 13 February 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't listen to any of these all the way through in 2004; didn't intentionally put any of them on my turntable or CD player for more than a song (if that). May have put individual songs from a couple (most likely the Clash and/or Graham Parker and/or Sex Pistols ones) on jukeboxes, but I don't think so. Definitely didn't change the radio station on individual songs from a few when they came on the radio, though.

chuck, Sunday, 13 February 2005 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

(well, i did play Kanye West all the way through, I guess. A couple times! I didn't think that album counted until I saw mark's post, though.)

chuck, Sunday, 13 February 2005 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Only two, College Dropout and Speakerboxx/Love below.

I'm amazed that Talking Heads won in '85

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 13 February 2005 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Only counting things I played all the way through:

Kanye West - The College Dropout
OutKast - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below
OutKast - Stankonia
PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love
Arrested Development - 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life of...
(I think this is quite a good album.)
Nirvana - Nevermind
De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising
The Who - Who's Next (1971)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

'Bollocks' about 50 times, 'TYM' pretty often.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Monday, 14 February 2005 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I listened to Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back just last week! and it all came flooding back. I've had Chuck's verses from "Rebel Without A Pause" pretty much on constant loop the last few days, seriously.

of the others-

Bob Dylan - Time Out of Mind
Nirvana - Nevermind
Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols

and I heard the majority of the Andre half of OutKast - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below during a car trip (album chosen by the driver) in November.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 14 February 2005 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

pretty much on constant loop (should have said: "in my head". haven't been playing the song constantly or anything..)

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 14 February 2005 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

College Dropout
Speakerboxxx
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Love and Theft
Play
Exile in Guyville
Ragged Glory
3 Feet High
Sign O the Times
Born In the USA
Thriller
Imperial Bedroom
Squeezing Out Sparks
(those last two for the first times)

and I didn't listen to Arrested Development, but I still pledge them my undying support. and some canned goods.
