Music to get you back on your feet after heartbreak

Beware: my heart is on my sleeve. But it's Valentine's Day weekend so whatever.

I went out with this girl for 6 years. We went through a rough patch, she left me, and is now seeing another guy. I'm still in love with her to this day. Thinking about them together this Valentine's Day kills me. Spare me the whole "if she left you when times got tough, it wasn't meant to be" mumbo jumbo for now, please.

I need some music to help me heal. I need the musical equivalent of aloe vera. If you've been there, then you know almost everything is too painful to listen to. Anything remotely sad depresses you; anything remotely happy annoys you. And you know that songs ABOUT heartbreak and loneliness do NOT help. You need something soothing and restorative. Ulrich Schnauss is the closest I've gotten. But there's gotta be more out there....any recommendations?

i would have to recommend anything noisy and confused enough to make it impossible to think about anything that would upset you. Comets On Fire, maybe?

After being emotionally eviscerated by an old girlfriend (she brought her new boyfriend to the show where I was supposed to win back her heart with my romantic crooning), I heard the Rolling Stones' "Under My Thumb" on the radio. It was the only few minutes I felt good for the rest of the month.

Heidy- Ho, Saturday, 12 February 2005 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm Gonna Break Every Heart I Can by Merle Haggarrd

I'm gonna break every heart I can
I'd be a find-'em-and-fool-'em man
I'm gonna dedicate my whole life to this one plan
Well if I live and have enough time
I'll get even with all woman-kind
I'm gonna break every heart I can in everyone I find

I'm gonna think of lotta good lies
I'm gonna laugh when a woman cries
I'm gonna have myself a style to recognize
I'm gonna travel all around the world
I'll be a friend to the sweetest girl
I'm gonna break every heart I can
or my name ain't Merle

Well if I ever get around to you
You gonna know about the things I do
They gonna tell about the harm
I've done in the latest News

Cause if I live and have enough time
I'll get even with all woman-kind
I'm gonna break every heart
I can in everyone I find
I'm gonna break every heart I can
I'd be a love-'em-and-leave-'em man
I'm gonna dedicate my whole life to this one plan

Well if I live and have enough time
I'll get even with all woman-kind
I'm gonna break every heart I can
in everyone I find
I'm gonna break every heart I can
in everyone I find

In the car, listening to Son Of Mustang Ford alone, driving really fast will make you feel on top of the world again.

Beethoven, Piano Sonata no. 30

It has sadness in it, no doubt, but I found it to be the only restorative music imaginable after the hardest breakup of my life.

Thanks everyone. I got around to downloading the Basement Jaxx and Rolling Stones songs....the Rolling Stones song is beautiful. I also tried to find Beethoven but alas not many people have classical mp3s.

Wookie Rookie, Tuesday, 15 February 2005 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Miccio very, very OTM w/ AC/DC.

A friend also recommends Andrew W.K.

In my case, I also just went through a painful break-up last summer and have been awash in memories and catharsis today. Strangely, the new U2, mostly about Bono's Dad, holy war, Bush, Jesus and stable marriage, has helped me cope today.

Chris O., Tuesday, 15 February 2005 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Hope you do alright, Wook. You're on the right track, anyhow -- that is, looking for helpful music rather than wallowing in downer-tunes.

Heidy- Ho, Tuesday, 15 February 2005 04:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking earlier today that Candi Staton would be great at almost any time. Maybe this is one of those times.
