"Adult Alternative"

This is what they play on my NPR affiliate when NPR has signed off. A curious blend of the worst music ever and then something kinda sublime like Lucinda William's "Jackson"

oops, "Williams'"

The radio format's called AAA (adult album alternative).

Not a popular format on this board. But rumor has it Pitchfork will be running a long article this week on how AAA's taking over public radio ...

Is NPR the worst radio station in the history of radio stations or what?

ummm...

NPR isn't really a radio station, it's just the largest of what are now hundreds of public radio organizations.

I don't like NPR news, though. Someone recently described it to me as "ambient journalism," and I agree.

I was pleasantly surprised to hear a snippet of DJ Shadow's "Organ Donor" used as segueway musing during the stock-market crap on Friday evening...and then "Take On Me" a bit later. The woman who chooses the interstitial bits has a blog, too, though I stupidly forgot the address.

This is pretty fucking dire though.

I rest my case.

I think this would be a really interesting article! I'm sorta interested in the sociology around AAA, which yes, includes NPR in general (and KCRW/Nic Harcourt in particular), magazines like Tracks and Paste, Starbucks in-store samplers, etc.

Most of it sounds like if you asked Melissa Rivers to write a Joni Mitchell song.

Aaron A., Sunday, 13 February 2005 06:12 (twenty-one years ago)

he says he would rather focus on being himself and not getting caught up in being a "star."

Hence the GAP ad.

AAA is where a lot of great artists get dumped. Anybody past their prime making good music that doesn't really rock that hard. I think if you were working a AAA channel you could have a great hourlong show based on what was available to you, but as a daylong thing, it evens out to bland crap.
