I love coffee. I never used to. But, it's now my bestest, oldest and dearest friend. Just enjoyed my second cup this morning (the wife and child are both sick, so I've been on the insane detail). They're both finally asleep after a rough night, and I'm basking in the solace of quiet time with ILM and some great fuckin' coffee, and I'm seeking to wed these two great things, but I just can't think of many songs. Help me out, won't ye?

Nearly God - Black Coffee

If this is referring to the Tricky song that appears on Nearly God, it's a standard originally written by Solomon Burke and performed by Ella Fitzgerald, among others.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 13 February 2005 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Morning Coffee by Morning Musume - I admit it's not very good, but it'll certainly wake you up with it's dozen screechingly nasal Japanese teenage voices.

these aren't "coffee" songs, necessarily, but that one Beth Orton track she did with the Chemical Brothers from Dig Your Own Hole and the A:xus cut "Callin' U" have coffee references.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 13 February 2005 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to drink coffee as well. Until I read about the health benefits of tea. Apparently they did some study where they found that if you drink 4 cups of tea a day you were less likely to get sick, and they tried it with coffee and it didn't do the same thing. I also recalled drinking green tea once when I was about to get sick and the bug went away. So I switched to tea, and I've come to love it. But to each his own, of course. Sorry I can't think of any coffee songs.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Sunday, 13 February 2005 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom T. Hall wrote at least 2 good ones, "Coffee Coffee Coffee" and "Don't Forget the Coffee Billy Joe". (Both are on the marvy Real tribute album, sung by Freedy Johnston and R.B. Morris respectively.)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Sunday, 13 February 2005 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

And if references count, surely the awful "black coffee and feta cheese" bit from Luomo's "Visitor" is worthy of mention...

Telephonething, Sunday, 13 February 2005 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

MC Lyte "Cappucino"

CLASSIC!

Tea is nice, but it doesn't provide the benefits I that coffee seamlessly provides.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 13 February 2005 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"Caffeine" - Faith No More.

Quite possibly their best toon! Not particularly soothing though.

PiersT, Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

"Coffee Black" by As Friends Rust, though it's about coffee in name only.

Oblivious Lad (Matthew Lazowski), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I know there's a Kristen Hersh song with a coffee lyric, but I can't remember which one. I am fairly certain it's on Hips and Makers.

daria g (daria g), Monday, 14 February 2005 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Saint Etienne, "Mr Donut"

another coffee yeah/ can you sense it in the air

daria g (daria g), Monday, 14 February 2005 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm tempted to say Serge Gainsbourg's "Couleur Cafe" and "La Javanese," but I don't think either one is about coffee. There's another German song called "Der Kaffee ist fertig," but I don't remember who did it.

Finally, there is a sense in which the entire Guided By Voices catalogue is "about coffee."

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 14 February 2005 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)
