Who here does websites?

Cuz very soon, I'll need to actually hire somebody to make one and maintain it weekly for me. I don't know the first thing about writing code or any of that. There won't be much money at all, but then, there won't be much work, either. The website will be as simple as possible (no flash, nothing fancy). Anyone interested in more details please email or post. OK thanks

Wouldn't it be easier to install Movable Type?

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Monday, 14 February 2005 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Why do you assume he's making a blog?

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 14 February 2005 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not saying he does. But I know some people use it to run a website. The HTML could be altered so as not to look like a blog.

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Monday, 14 February 2005 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

that's what i'm doing at the moment for a client and have done once before too. i find MT very fiddly tho and never quite susses the installation process fully. whew good job i don't do this for a living (oh wait)...

I do websites - graphics, HTML coding, style sheets, no problem with any of that, so maybe I can do the kind of site you want. If you'd like to email me about it, it's daria_g at cox.net.

daria g (daria g), Monday, 14 February 2005 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm probably a bit late to the game, but I might as well throw my name in the ring

Avi (Avi), Monday, 14 February 2005 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

You guys do websites? Gross.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 14 February 2005 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

really, guys, it's not much - basically i just need someone to create and then maintain once a week a site for a mailorder / distro. Update it once a week, etc etc. I'd pay money up front for it's creation and then I figure I can paypal a coupla buck monthly after that. It'll hafta be REAL punk rock. There will be no pictures (unless it's easy for you), just text. Very simple. A lot of you kind folks have offered your services for this - who here is still interested now that you know the sepcifics? And can you name a price? Email please...

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Monday, 14 February 2005 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the idea of setting up a blog-type template is probably actually smarter in the long run for you. you can update it weekly and not have to deal w/flakey webdesigners and you won't have to pay them regularly. maybe get someone to set it up for you and do some of the design work and then deal with the rest yourself.

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 14 February 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually just did a label/distro site for someone recently and have code ready to go. it even has an easy admin interface if you're up for the task of doing updates yourself. I won't post links here since some of the stuff isn't live yet, but email me if you're interested.

Avi (Avi), Monday, 14 February 2005 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Obviously I'd rather handle it all myself but I really don't have a clue how. Tito, your idea for a blog-type template is intriguing - where do I begin? How easy is it to do, bearing in mind my computer use is limited to Netscape, Microsoft Word, Nero and Soulseek?

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Monday, 14 February 2005 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

if somebody sets it up right, you'll be able to go to a webpage, put in a username/password and then add stuff really easily. not much harder than adding posts on ilx.

then you just bring in your tech person every once in a while, if there's a big change or something. but routine little additions and news stuff can be set up so it's really easy for you to do it yourself. it would take you as long to add some new distro news as it would be to email your tech geek that same info.

i'd offer cause i love doing geek stuff for records, but...

but what?

NOW who can do this for me (what msp describes above)?

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

oh but i figured someone else on this thread probably beat me to the punch....

Ohno, it's the too many cooks syndrome. Roger, we are all like.. you could just learn how to do this, and this, and this, which is easy for us because we already do this web stuff, but if you felt like spending your time learning all that, you wouldn't be offering to pay someone who already knows.

Do you have a place to host the website?

If you just want some nice looking, simple, text based pages, I can create that for you. I don't know what a fair rate is (yes, one should never say that), but let me know what you had in mind, if you're still looking for someone to do this. It would most likely only take me a few hours. Simple.

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

great, thanks daria - can you help me kinda get started on one of those 'blog-style' templates so i can update it myself? i'll still totally pay you to set it up for me and whatnot

i don't have a place to host the site as it were, but I am 'involved' with several websites (for my label, band, etc) but they're not run by me in any capacity

did my email go through?

ah well.

msp (msp), Thursday, 17 February 2005 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I would see what msp says. As far as a blog-style template + administrative interface, I think it would be better for msp to do it, because it wasn't my idea, and what he said was kind of vague and doesn't give me enough specifics to work with.. so I'd be tearing my hair out trying to work out the best way to create a site that matched someone else's idea that I don't clearly understand.

A few nice looking HTML pages is the part I can handle easily. Once you get into a web-based interface where you put in a username/password, that's a more complicated project for me. However, maybe msp has already done such a project, so he might have a basic version already created, and would just have to modify it to suit you.

At the Typepad site (http://www.sixapart.com/typepad/) you can sign up for your own blog at a cost of $4.95/month, and they host it, so it will go live immediately and you won't have to pay for your own web host. And updating it is just a matter of putting in your username and password and adding new entries. No coding required. You can do a month trial for free. Maybe that would work?

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 17 February 2005 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope you're not tearing your hair out over this already, by the way!

The issue with a blog-style template is.. well, either you sign up for a service that hosts your site and has software already set up to let you do easy updates without writing HTML code, or you get your own web host and you have someone set up a site with all this back-end stuff that has a nice administrative interface to use for your updates. Again, I don't know what msp had in mind..

Tell me why do you have to go and make things so complicated?...

Fat Anarchy on Airtube (ex machina), Thursday, 17 February 2005 04:50 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, but daria... i'm sure he'd probably get a much more visually appealing site from your efforts...

my idea of a perfect user interface circa 1988:

c:\>

yeah... typepad would probably be a great way to go... can you register a domain to point to your install?

all i basically had in mind to do is install moveable type, get the templates looking non-blog but more in line with something appropriate to what he's doing.

i didn't really mean to step in with my "did you get my email?" post. kind of a blunder there. [insert smiley here.]

if roger wants movable type, i could help you install it. not a problem at all. (it's nice to use my powers for good.) depending on where it's hosted, it'd probably be no trouble. and then you could make it look like it needs to. etc.

or even if you want to do it yourself and just need someone to bug if you might run into trouble, by all means...

just let me know.
