TS: David Bowie's Lodger v. any Talking Heads album

Just curious to see how this one goes. (I'm partial to Lodger, but have no polemical argument to offer why.)

Lodger because I just like Bowie a hell of a lot better.

But also because it has some of Bowie's all time killer songs on there:

"Look Back in Anger"
"Red Sails"
"DJ"
"Boys Keep Swinging"
"Fantastic Voyage"
"Repetition"

...argh, now I wanna hear the album and it's at home!

"You KNOW who I am HE SAID!"

Lodger > Little Creatures. That's all though.

Not really a fair question to ask me, since I'm not a fan of Bowie (except for "Low"), and think that the first 4 THeads albums are brilliant.

(My opinion on Bowie changed recently, after seeing that Steve Zissou movie. I decided that his songs were probabl much better than I had originally thought, but I guess I'm not partial to his overthetop vocal style.)

i'll take at least two talking heads lps, maybe three over lodger

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 14 February 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

So, therefore, for me,...

Any Talking Heads album > Lodger

peepee (peepee), Monday, 14 February 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

more songs about buildings and food > lodger
remain in light > lodger
fear of music > lodger
speaking in tongues = lodger
77 = lodger

all the other TH albums are worse.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 14 February 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Kyle made me rethink me Talking Heads analysis. "'77" is my least favourite of the first four. And, they tailed off substantially with "True Stories" and "Naked" (though I'd really love to see the vid for "Blind" again).

peepee (peepee), Monday, 14 February 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

"Lodger" has always been underrated, in part due to the awful, flat mix. Song for song it's probably his last unassailably great album.

I suppose there's a very slight link between the Eno-helmed secondhand Thirld Worldisms of "African Nite Flight" and "Remain in Light."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 February 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm not a huge fan of the Heads--I like the way they play, especially on "Buildings and Food," but I can kinda live without David Byrne's vocals. But "Remain" is a record I still like a lot and I think it's a little better than "Lodger," which I have always loved. I'm trying to spread the love today since someone accused me--on the Chicago thread--of not likin' anything, which hurts me far more than the accusation that I'm boring, which I may well be.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Monday, 14 February 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

There was a time in my life when everything about David Byrne was a turn-on (except "True Stories"). While it's not true anymore, the Heads are still one of my all-time favorites; it's very diffcult to be objective about them.

I played "Remain In Light" regularly until last year's fantastic reissue of "The Name of This Band is Talking Heads." Most of the live renditions of "Light" era songs smoke the originals.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 February 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

Ever notice that many of the best Bowie or Heads songs of that era - "Heroes," "Look Back in Anger," "Once in a Lifetime" - give co-writing credit to Eno? I remember hearing an NPR interview where Eno and Byrne talk about the making of "Once in a Lifetime," and it was Eno's contribution (the chorus, basically) that totally made the song. No wonder he and Byrne split over songwriting credits. Me thinks someone's ego was a little fragile.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 14 February 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

Adrian Belew I think is still kinda upset about not receiving any writing credits for RiL or for that first Tom Tom Club album, both of which he had a hand in.

TS: David Bowie's vocals vs. David Byrne's vocals

peepee (peepee), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

How 'bout David Byrne singing "Kingdom Come"?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

I'd value Lodger as highly as RiL and SiT, above all the other Heads albums. That awful, flat mix is part of its technique.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Lodger > Talking Heads 77
Lodger > More Songs About Buildings & Food
Fear of Music = Lodger
Remain in Light > Lodger

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

I like Lodger plenty (one of my favorite Bowie albums), but I'll take 77 through The Name of This Band and maybe the best-of (which I never did hear) over it. (Nothing against Bowie or Lodger, I just like Talking Heads waaaay more than I like most bands/artists.)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

Matos OTM - with the possible exception of "Station to Station," which is at least as cocaine-freaky-amazing as "Fear of Music."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 February 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

Lodger because I just like Bowie a hell of a lot better.

Not big on the Heads overall (prefer Byrne solo by a mile), and I lurve Lodger - the only TH album on a par Lodger IMO is their best one: Naked.
