"the last of the famous international playboys"

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 14 February 2005 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Disappointed

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 14 February 2005 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Hairdresser on Fire

derrick (derrick), Monday, 14 February 2005 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I am Blind

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Monday, 14 February 2005 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

yes i am blind

this song wins, lock thread

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 14 February 2005 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Hairdresser on Fire.

john'n'chicago, Tuesday, 15 February 2005 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Just about every fucking song, actually.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"...Playboys"

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

HAIRDRESSER. moz growling + piano + chimes + vini reilly.

f--gg (gcannon), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

a close second: "Disappointed".

Just about every fucking song, actually.
I'd be curious to find someone who would choose "Ouji Board (x2)". Cuz i hated that song from the moment I heard it. "Lucky Lisp" never did anything for me either.

john'n'chicago, Tuesday, 15 February 2005 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

You're right, John: I take it back. I don't care much for "He Knows I'd Love To See Him." I never figured out why "Michael's Bones" or "Sister, I'm A Poet" weren't included.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Bono Drag

Bimble... (Bimble...), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"Disappointed" is tough to beat. Maybe "November Spawned a Monster" or "Everyday is Like Sunday".

"Yes I Am Blind" is horrid, that's the one I usually skip.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"Last of the Famous Internationa Playboys"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I almost picked Hairdresser on Fire. It was a tough choice.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I never figured out why "Michael's Bones" or "Sister, I'm A Poet" weren't included.

Yes, this bothered me too.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone hear the covers EP by Colin Meloy from The Decemberists? 'Sister I'm A Poet' is probably the highlight. the version of 'Everyday...' is kind of terrible, not least because he doesn't know the words.

fsharp (fsharp), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

playboys

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

God, it's been years since I've listened to this. But since "Suedehead" is on there, I'm going to have to say that.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Could never figure why "Will never marry" lost about 90 seconds of Vini Reilly soloing at the end. If it had the full version, then that would be my pick. But otherwise "Disappointed".

Rob M (Rob M), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Definitely Suedehead.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

'I'd Love To', off of My Early Burglary Years, is probably the best of the b-sides that got passed over.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ouija Board" is a full verse/chorus too long, but it has some beautiful moments - the opening verse in particular is one of his most dramatic deliveries and it's Street's subtlest hour underneath - and I often root for it despite knowing it's one of his weakest singles. Am I in the minority in falling asleep not 45 seconds into "November Spawned a Monster"? Something about that one crossed a line in me.

Bona Drag is just an absolutely perfect compilation, though - it's terrifying.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be curious to find someone who would choose "Ouji Board (x2)".

I would! It's Moz's best joke ever. It's the example I play to people who think he's just miserable, and fail to recognise the black humor behind so much of what he does.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

another vote for "TLOTFIP"

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to pick only one?

(Unheralded-but-the-timeframe-allows-for-it choice: "Get Off the Stage," a B-side for "Piccadilly Palare.")

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, Christ, Ned - the Morrissey Polka!?!

"Suedehead" is still the best solo song he's done.

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"November Spawned A Monster" is still the only Bona Drag song that doesn't fill me with homicidal rage that people encouraged this type of bullshit.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

"Everyday is Like Sunday" is one of the prettiest songs ever.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

(put together my post and Spencer's and you have ILM in a nutshell)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

deez nuts

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

"In A Nutshell" - brill Morrissey title.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"november spawned a monster" used to send chills up my spine, i don't know why. "ouija board" is GREAT.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Ouiji Board, Ouiji Board a lot. It's gimmicky, but isn't that a good thing? Hairdresser On Fire is probably the best.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Thursday, 17 February 2005 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, Christ, Ned - the Morrissey Polka!?!

Such hate! I love it, it's great. (There are many other songs on Bona Drag I'd prefer to listen to but I refuse to choose only one, so.)

Besides, tweak the arrangement a bit, you have Morrissey's first mariachi number = his future predicted! (Sorta.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 February 2005 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The phrasing on Suedehead is absolutely incredible. The man is a marvellously expressive singer.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 17 February 2005 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyday Is Like Sunday

zeus, Thursday, 17 February 2005 09:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't remember the phrasing on "Suedehead" as being anything all that special, not even when compared with other Viva Hate tracks like "Everyday Is Like Sunday" or the ever-despicable "Bengali In Platforms".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 February 2005 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

There are so many great things about "Suedehead" - the hooks, the melody, the way Moz fits the words to the melody, the little scraps of information he supplies that somehow create a thumbnail sketch of a deeply ambivalent relationship, the blithely insouciant coda - it's a pretty good case that Moz once had genius in him.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 17 February 2005 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

OPO forces me to pick "Everyday Is Like Sunday." A great song, with the added bonus of following up the waiting-for-doomsday image from "Ask."
