I just wanted to say that despite their usual embarrassment of getting caught....

....one of my favourite things to see is people singing in their car.

I saw a guy driving on the freeway the other day who must have imagined up a great drum set with a crash ride over to his upper right, he was air-bashing away like he was the next Dave Grohl.

I wonder how many disastrous car wrecks can be blamed on air-musicianship?

i recently saw police camera footage on a tv show where some 18 wheeler driver decided that his job was so boring that he had installed an actual drum kit inside his truck cockpit. as the cops filmed him, he was banging away on the thing. he got arrested.

man, i dont have my license yet but when i do i'm gonna be air-cowbelling every chance i get.

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps he was a drummer who also wanted to drive a truck.

If I owned a car, I would sing in it.

Once, when I was a teenager, doing dishes in an apartment at the shore (where my family was staying), I was caught dancing (to Miles Davis's "Star People" of all things) by a little girl peering in through a screen-door. After I realized she was watching, I stopped. I think she waited to see if I was going to start up again, then she left. I don't remember saying anything to her. I think I just kind of smiled self-consciously.

The neatest thing is when you realize that the person in the next car is singing along to a song that's on the same radio station that you're listening to. It makes you think that an impromptu "Fame" type street dance could break out at any moment. (Especially if the song on the radio is being sung by Irene Cara.)

It sure beats watching people picking their nose.

This almost sounds like the video to Spiderbait's cover of "Black Betty".

(And I just figured out which song it was: "U'n'L". I've never actually owned Star People--I had just taped something off the radio.)

I saw a dude barrelling along the freeway rawking out to some hardcore punk or something. It was cool and all, except he was so intense (ie neck veins bulging, jaw clenched) I was kinda scared he'd rearend someone in his enthusiasm.

Sometimes I wanna go 'Hey, whatcha listening to?'

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Almost completely off topic, but I was once listening to a story on the radio in my car about some dude who got his penis stuck in the bar of his weights set, and how he had to finally accept defeat and call the fire department, etc. I started cracking up (as you would), but then I looked around me at all the usually glum morning rush hour scowls and pretty much every one of them had a huge motherfucking grin on their faces.

Car singing is super extreme classico, because it's the only place in MY LIFE anyway, where I can sing at full volume to very loud music and not worry about bothering anyone or anyone hearing me. A car on the freeway blasting music is the closest thing to a cocoon I have in life.

It's especially great for music that I definitely and absolutely cannot sing along with but feel extremely compelled to anyway.

I love seeing other people rock out in their cars, and when people see me doing it, I always point to them and give them that look that says "YOU KNOW YOU LOVE IT."

Can't imagine driving without singing.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

Nothing is more satisfying than looking in your rearview mirror to see some guy rapping along to whatever he's listening to, then changing radio stations and watching it synch up exactly.

Christian Rock makes people do the strangest things.

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

Stopped at a red light next to someone one belting out "Rocket Man" with the windows rolled down and wailing on his steering wheel with actual *drumsticks* ranks as one of my favourite moments of this life.

alex in montreal, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Aww man, this makes me said that I don't have a car anymore (mine broke down for good three weeks ago.) :(

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

it just occurred to me that peepee is into what you could call 'song dogging'

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

I love doing this, but am usually too self-conscious to do it in stopped traffic. I do love catching other people though, whether they care or not ;) Also fun to see, but far rarer, is the car-full-of-friends sing-along.

wailing on his steering wheel with actual *drumsticks*

this is just awesome

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

I neglected to mention, the guy driving behind me was rapping along to DMX and was doing these great hand motions. Completely convincing performance while driving.

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and my personal shameful confession is that I catch myself singing along to the female vocal parts of songs more often than the male parts. I'm pretty sure as a straight male I should be mortified.
