i guess this is true, so are Oasis still that popular? as i recall, their last album sold nothing here in the US.

JD from CDepot, Tuesday, 15 February 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

I am loathe to say this, but "Support for the show comes from Jet" is probably a better answer. Though I will be there for the headliner.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Heh heh heh. And that's all I have to say here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

TS: Oasis after Whats the story Morning Glory vs. Jet ever

JD from CDepot, Tuesday, 15 February 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

As Brit who is currently staying in New York for a couple of months I've seen the bill posters for this event and can't understand it at all. My parents just cam to visit and even they thought it was strange!

Robin Goad (rgoad), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

Maybe it was a weird psychology experiment - they put the band in a venue that seemed ridiculous, making a lot of people go "er, okay, I'll go see that, what the hell, it'll probably be a half empty arena."

Yeah, obvs Jet helped.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Then again, Oasis selling out MSG isn't that weird when Wilco can do it too. R.E.M. had no trouble filling MSG in the fall even though the last few albums have sold poorly.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

I bet that if Pulp played Madison Square Garden, it would sell out.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

Notice that it's the Theater at MSG, not the main arena. Still a big room. OutKast took the Stankonia tour there and Neil Young solo's gigs were there.

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Ah, sorta like Wembley Arena vs. Wembley Stadium, then.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

except that it's down a full notch even from the arena. it's a theater, not a hockey rink.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

GO RANGERS!!!!!

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Oh, it's just the theatre? That's no big deal. They regularly sell out Beacon Theatre and Hammerstein, which is about the same capacity as the Theatre. I graduated from college in the Theatre. Not that exciting.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

"Notice that it's the Theater at MSG, not the main arena."

Where did you read this? As far as I can tell, it's the main arena.

michaeln (kid loki), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

No, it is most certainly the arena, not the theatre. Here's the Ticketmaster page for the event.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, all. That Bill Cosby speed-reading shit fucks with yor brane somethin.

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Support for Oasis in NYC area surely = suburban New Jersey, Staten Island, Long Island.

nabiscothingy (nory), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

I don't know about that, Nabisco. There are a LOT of Anglophiles concentrated in NYC.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

Hence my estimation that Pulp could sell out MSG without any difficulty or a flashy opening act.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

Especially since Pulp has not played a show in NYC since 1998.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

their downfall in the UK I would imagine has to do with national embarrassment and the ending of a moment, neither of which apply in the U.S. also, they are an arena band, and as such appeal to an arena audience. also, they write some good songs and you can always laugh at them. also, Jet. also, scalpers.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

So they are playing the main arena after all? Heheheh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

My sister is really upset with me for not agreeing to go with her to see Oasis and Jet in June. It's madness, I tell you.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

I kinda wish that I was seeing this Oasis show now.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Noel Gallagher has compared some of his new songs to Bob Dylan in some of the newer interviews ive read (i think they were in NME)

which is something im dying to hear, no matter how embarassingly bad it probably will be.

JD from CDepot, Tuesday, 15 February 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

The Oasis list, while a lot quieter these days, is still pretty excited about this tour. What can be said? They've put out some good stuff and people like it -- hey, pop! ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

I blame it all on reverse Oasis nostalgia. Us Yanks only embrace them after they've given up on conquering America. It's a come-back tour from a band that never went away!

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

this must be a purely NYC thing. because if you look at their date in Philly, it's at the Penn's Landing Festival Pier. which is a regular home for...Ween.

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

Noel on selling out MSG:

"They sold out in an hour. Did you hear that? An hour. Thats an hour. Theres been lots of people in our office going round sucking each others dicks going Oh, isnt it amazing? But you know these things always are a recipe for a fucking disaster. So Ill enjoy it in the dressing room after weve raised the roof. But it is good to flog that many tickets in America, because apparently theyre more expensive."

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 18 February 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

The Oasis fan offices are more involved than I thought!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 February 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

I fucking love Noel Gallagher....Not a huge Oasis fan, think they're alright and enjoy some of their songs, but I never, ever miss an Oasis interview when I see one in a magazine...those dudes are so entertaining....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 18 February 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the interview clips on the DVD singles for Heathen Chemistry were hilarious -- pure autopilot egomaniacal x = x jabber of the finest quality.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 February 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
http://www.nme.com/news/111709.htm

During the 90s, Oasis typically headlined the Universal Amphitheater.
This September, they will play the Hollywood Bowl, which is three times as large. Are Oasis three times as popular now as ten years ago?

late adopter, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 08:42 (twenty years ago)

Maybe it's not the Hollywood Bowl proper but the Theater at Hollywood Bowl.

I tend to agree with nabisco upthread.

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

And again, I'm telling you that you're crazy. The support for Oasis is in the cities where there are a significant number of anglophiles. Surely you've met these people, right?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

Morrissey was able to play the Hollywood Bowl, so I guess it isn't so weird that Oasis would be able to do so either.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

xpost:
You mean people who live on the Upper West Side and watch Masterpiece Theater? Maybe. All I know is, the anglophiles who I saw at the Beautiful South show I went to a few years back looked pretty bridge-and-tunnel to me.

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

It's all the folks who haven't gotten over Don Hill's. Not so unbelievably, I've had two or three friends here in the city ask me about tickets.

Also, don't take this personally but I’d wear my NJ disguise if I were going to a Beautiful South show too.

dan. (dan.), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

I don't get the Oasis/Don Hill's connection.

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Oasis selling out the Hollywood Bowl proper won't be a surprise at all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Not sure about it anymore, but it used to be the only place in the city where people would go nuts to a Bluetones song. You could still get in a fight about Blur or Oasis in 2002. They used to do a glam night that would just be packed with anglophilic hipsters. There are tons of these people walking around this city just waiting for Oasis to return so that they can feel whole again.

dan. (dan.), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

And this has been going on since the mid 90's. The legions keep getting bigger. Now where not just talking nostalgics, but recent converts as well.

dan. (dan.), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

What about that place in Soho called Denizen, I think, that has a Britpop night on Sunday called, I kid you not, "Everyday Is Like Sunday"?

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Sweet death, take me now.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

I bet it gets crowded.

dan. (dan.), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)
