You realize some of these band have been around a decade, yeah?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post

Seriously, do you ever search the archives?

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

love Ms. John Soda and what I've heard of Mum. Sufjan Stevens' 'Greetings from Michigan is very good, 'Seven Swans' is kind of yawnsome but I've only listened twice or so. never heard of the others.

Custos baffles me. Is he real? Is he some kind of bizarre super-long-running gimmick? What is this?

I have the newest Auburn Lull album. It's pretty good, I guess, but I rarely listen to it. I don't really know the lingo for this type of music, so I may be describing it pretty off. It's really droney rock, very atmospheric, extremely spacey. Think Doves but a hundred times more spacey. I enjoy it, but it's not often that I get in the mood for this kind of stuff.

Mum's latest album could be one of the dullest records i've ever heard.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Mugison's debut Lonely Mountain from 2003 is good.. it's very much kinda like a one-man-band laptop-ish take on early Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. I haven't heard the new one.

As for Rachel's (who have been around for at least a decade), I'd go for the Songs for Egon Schiele album. (forgive the misspellings).

You realize some of these band have been around a decade, yeah?
No. I don't know anything at all about them. Thats why I asked. (The names all came from a mixdisc full of [mostly] new bands.)

Seriously, do you ever search the archives?
Yes. But I rarely ever find what I'm (specifically) looking for. So I post a question

Custos baffles me. Is he real? Is he some kind of bizarre super-long-running gimmick? What is this?
I'm actually a self-aware beta version of some stock-market-trend-prediction software written by insane chaosticians.

Thanks in advance.)

My lord, the new Mum album is incredibly boring

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

the mum album is good. all of that stuff is good. if you liked it on the mix cd you'll like the albums, pick them up.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 04:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Rachel's is good. Indie rock orchestra stuff, short though, not long like Godspeed. The Sea and the Bells is my favorite.

matter setter straighter, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 04:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Rachel's is good, yeah. Music for Egon Schiele is my favorite, but if you're looking for a good disc to start with, Selenography will probably give you a good flavor of the group's entire range. Avoid Handwriting and Systems/Layers: both are pleasant but somewhat unsatisfying.

I like Sufjan Stevens' Greetings From Michigan. In some ways, he's a more interesting Iron & Wine. Both have finger-picking, soft/smooth voices, interested in regional storytelling, but Sufjan's rhythms and arrangements are more eclectic (you can hear elements of Stereolab and Steve Reich on the album, awesome).

Owen is the acoustic project of Mike Kinsella (Joan of Arc). I haven't heard that much of Owen, but what I did hear convinced me that his one-off self-titled album under the name American Football is superior. (I bet Chris V. probably knows more about Owen.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 08:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i was gonna say "get your own fucking opinions" but it's custos. jeez, man.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 08:02 (twenty-one years ago)

the owen stuff i've heard is well written, if a little too lyrically emo for my tastes on occasion

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 08:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, Owen/Kinsella's totally emo. There's an American Football song called "I'll See You When We're Both Not So Emotional"!!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 08:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Ms. John Soda? -> isn't this a girls against boys side project?

Sufjan Stevens -> did not like seven swans, thought it was a bit too samey/boring but then again i only listened to it once.

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a notwist side project, i liked the first album ALOT, never got around to hearing the second. the only sufjan stevens i heard is the michigan one, LOVED it - lying on your belly on spring break trying to 'get some sun' and reading middlesex is the perfect way to hear that record. haven't heard seven swans yet.
