Wherein she masters the Mysterious Transformation. I don't much care for her previous stuff. This one will likely make my best-of-2005. Anyone else heard it?

MV, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 05:10 (twenty-one years ago)

no, and never will. spammer.

she'll always be a rejected demo. get a clue.

(whoa, that's mean, even for me)

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 07:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoa dude! Where'd the hell did that come from?

I don't know about this "Mysterious Transformation" - she was working w/ Mitchell Froom on her last record, so if you're looking for some sort of transmutation, check out the gab between solo-acoustic warbling and Sony-funded multi-track splendor. I like the new album well enough, though I'm partial what preceeded it (w/ Come Out of Your Mine leading the way).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the album. I even added her on myspace. I don't care much for the Calypso jammin-on-the-beach song on the album, though. She should stick to the Heidi Berry soundalike songs.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i kinda started a thread about her new album:

Don't Tell Keren Ann I've Been Seeing Mia Doi Todd On The Side!

i like it. but i like the first song with dead meadow so much more than any other song on the album it isn't even funny. i said as much in a review i wrote about the album.

Hi, Maria D!!!! I love u! I am yer biggest fan and I want to have yer babies!!!!!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

He's having my baby, what a lovely way of saying he loves me....

Maria D. (Maria D.), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, you two, get one island.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Scott, where'd you review the album? And I'm not asking because I'm writing a review for some other place & am looking to pass off your ideas as my own.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i wrote one for the village voice, but it hasn't appeared yet. don't know when it will.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

is maria your wifee, scott?

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

She was great on the DNTEL album, but her own stuff has been mostly insufferable and reminds me of being lectured to by activists at Berkeley. Still, I think I could like her (I of course dated an activist at Berkeley).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"is maria your wifee, scott?"

Yees, shee iz mi 1 und ownlee.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i've tried several times to not like that track (anywhere, anyone), but alas i cannot. it would certainly seem to be her sole virtue, though... and truly awful live. she reminds me of an ex-girlfriend who was OBSESSED with her degrees.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

she seems very nice.

that's all I got.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I know. And that's where the sea change in how she sounds occurs. But that isn't the transformation I have in mind. To my ear, the new album is the one where--cliche alert--her ability finally matches her ambition.

(Interesting to me how her melodies, chord structures and vocal style can be easily well-explained by 1) the Japanese influence or 2) the Joni Mitchell influence.)

MV, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd probably feel the same way, but that damn UB40 move totally skews the record for me.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i hate it when someone says something nice about a person you've just errantly made catty remarks about because then you really seem like an asshole.... so, yes, i'm sure she's very nice.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

don't feel bad, lots of people are nice. and nice is a good thing to be. but still, her music = awful.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, if ever a singer-songwriter was tailor made for mitchell froom, she's the one. way to stay on top of things, mitch.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the song Matthew/Fluxblog posted some time ago - "Casa Nova." Are the other songs on the disc reggae/ska-y as well?
And what's the Dead Meadow connection?

Bent Over at the Arclight, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Bent (ah, interweb nicknames) - that "Casa Nova" song is the UB40 thing I was bitching about; it's OK, I guess, but not like anything else on the album. It's all over the place (in a good way) - there are tracks w/ just her & a guitar, or her & a piano, the rock track Scott mentioned, one track w/ a little flamenco flavor, and so on.

As for the Dead Meadow thing - members of that group & Beachwood Sparks are on the record as MDT's backing band.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

shes nice and cute!

charleston charge (chaki), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

don't fuck with this one stence he's got 'clever' on his side

whoa (Gear!), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, I now remember meeting her and she was in fact nice.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Finally heard this, and it sounds like a great leap forward. As so often happens with those who have a cup of coffee in the major leagues and then move on, older, wiser & more certain of which way to go.

briania (briania), Thursday, 17 February 2005 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I got this yesterday, and after one listen, man am I bored. Nothing remotely exciting. The Bones, Muscle, Whatever piano song is pretty but the rest of the stuff is nothing new and not even inspired sounding to at least show some effort. Is it gonna grow on me? Cause right now I don't have a strong desire to listen more. And I loved the Dntel remix single thing, but this album seems so already done. Am I really wrong? What am I not hearing?

matt2 (matt2), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing, most likely. It's hard to talk anybody out of finding this kind of thing boring, but this is one case where you really have to buy the premise to buy the bit. While I thought her early albums were pretty motionless, the extra-musical whaddayacallit made me hope for something more. And the new album feels like something more. Now if there was a Dntel remix of the whole thing...

briania (briania), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

can someone explain 'stence's vitriolic response at the beginning of this thread?

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

stencil probably got sonned by her ;-)

LaToya JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 17 February 2005 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

naw, but i rejected her demo once!

when people who aren't ilm regulars or even logged in start one-sentence threads about some shitty new album, it's spam. not really that difficult to figure out.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 17 February 2005 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, then - now everything's crystal!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 February 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this just axiomatic for you, stencil? I don't like it+I don't know you=spam?

MV, Thursday, 17 February 2005 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

If this hadn't popped up, I was going to start a thread. Not because I was expecting loads of Doi Todd love from ILM, but just to see whether anybody considers her worthy of discussion, occupying the obscure adult contemp niche that she does.

briania (briania), Friday, 18 February 2005 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

This "The Last Night of the Winter" track is very good!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 19 February 2005 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Last Night of Winter" even.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 19 February 2005 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
she's cute, and there are a couple of great songs on this record, but it is a bit dull and humorless. but she seems like someone who has a great record in her. i await.....

timmy tannin (pompous), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 06:28 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...

"What If We Do?" is such a perfect song. I like that she risks humorlessness ("Like A Knife" and "Autumn" are both perfect too).

Eazy, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 04:52 (sixteen years ago)

lol @ hstencil
