OK, now that this has been delayed indefinitely (http://pitchforkmedia.com/news/05-02/16.shtml#story2) can anyone help out a non-Soulseek user with a copy. I'll take an oath to make right by purchasing the CD when it' sfinally released, but I really need to hear this now!

mohair (jon kapper), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Lame.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

uh - use soulseek.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

uh - I am on a MAC and I've tried Soulseek but to no avail. And, Alex, what is Lame; my request or the decision to delay the release?

mohair (jon kapper), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

There are good Mac OS X slsk programs now.

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

There is a reasonably interesting interview in XLR8R this month where she talks about Supercat and hanging with Dipset and how much of an, errr...inspiration, Peaches is.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

Not if you can't afford to upgrade to 10.3 there aren't.

xpost

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

"how much of an, errr...inspiration, Peaches is."

wow, i didn't expect her to jump the shark this soon.

ntoskrnl.exe, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

i have the 10.3 discs you can borrow if you need them Alba.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

I wish I lived in Glasgow. Jed and Alba and Cozen (I think?) all in one place!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

x-post thanks mike checking that link now.

mohair (jon kapper), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

aw adam, i wished you lived in Glasgow too.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Everyone move to Glasgow!

Actually don't - things would get very expensive.

Cozen doesn't live in Glasgow anymore. He is suffering for his art.

Jed - thank you for the offer. I'm never sure about dodgy OS installations. I am a hypocrite because I have a dogdgy Photoshop but I like to keep my OS legit for some reason.

Mohair - have sent you an email.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Alba if you were here I'd kiss you. Thanks so much!

mohair (jon kapper), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

Law is an art?

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

"And, Alex, what is Lame; my request or the decision to delay the release?"

The decision to delay. Your request is totally natural.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if this supposed sample clearance issue has anything to do with this.

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

eh? it's not dodgy, it's the discs that came with a new ibook.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Alba, I just emailed you.

mohair (jon kapper), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

Oh, sorry jed. Installing them unauthorised on my eMac would be dodgy though, wouldn't it? I have feeling it wouldn't work. My flatmate has new discs from Powerbook too - I just assume maybe wrongly that I can't use them.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

it's cool but you are wrong to assume that! ;) i have installed the ibook discs on 2 imacs and a powerbook (as well as the ibook obvs).

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

i think it might have to do with the planned inclusion of "URAQT" in its Piracy Funds Terrorism form.

S.

essdot, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

and how much of an, errr...inspiration, Peaches is.

there's actually a review in Teen Vogue of all places and this is their main selling point. seriously from their review, i wouldn't buy the album.

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

dude I offered you the 10.3 disks ages ago! but I respect your reasons for declining (plus yr not really missing out on much, ssX is kinda rub.)

I will be back to glasgow soon and loaded (um eventually)!

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

I still haven't heard this album.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

I like both Peaches and MIA.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

Hmmn I wonder if the US tour will be cancelled or delayed now.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

The Peaches inspiration should be pretty obvious. They both basically did their music by themselves using an MC-505.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

i think i read in spin that it was while mia was doing video for elastica, and peaches was the opener for the tour that mia fell in love with peaches' mc-505.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

That baile funk sample could be the reason, but I doubt it since the song probably doesn't have any U.S. publishing rights. Also, I get the impression that the people who make baile funk have very limited legal access in Brazil. Anyway, it's not Dr. Buzzard. EVERYONE has sampled "Sunshowers" before

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

yeah apparently peaches was the one who urged her to make music in the first place! so i guess according to some of you she jumped the shark before she ever recorded a note!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

Hmmn I wonder if the US tour will be cancelled or delayed now.

U.S. tour?! Did I miss this?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

yes, you did. Do try to keep up, Jaymc.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

Tut tut.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

I have made a note in your file.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

No, seriously, was a tour announced? The XL site only shows her UK dates.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

stop playing with yourselves lads.

lizzie, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

never!

Sorry Jaymc, this took me a while to find:

Mar 15 - Seattle, WA - Chop Suey
Mar 16 - San Francisco, CA - the Independent
Mar 19 - Atlanta, GA - the Drunken Unicorn
Mar 20 - Orlando, FL - the Social
Mar 23 - Miami, FL - (early) Urban Outfitters instore
(late night) I/O Lounge

Where's the closest for you? Atlanta?

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

No real tour concludes with an Urban Outfitters instore, music conference or no.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

I personally would love to do an Urban Outfitters instore performance!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Actually you should have seen the performance I gave after they charged me $60 for a funny t-shirt with something about Ohio or Jewish girls written on it arf arf!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

What sample is supposedly causing the hold-up?

hiphopster8 (hiphopster8), Friday, 18 February 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

IIRC, Diplo said somewhere on the Hollertronix board that it was the "You Big Dummy" sample. Which is confusing to me, since I thought "URAQT" wasn't on the album...

Telephonething, Friday, 18 February 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

It isn't.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 18 February 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

Or at least it isn't on the leaked version. Who the fuck knows anymore? I just hope they sort this shit out so's I can buy it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 18 February 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

I got the impression the promo wasn't the whole thing, so I really hope URAQT is on it. The Diplo mix at least always reminds me of "Baby-Daddy" (or whatever it's called) by B-Rock and the Bizz.

La Monte (La Monte), Friday, 18 February 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

I just bought a promo on eBay yesterday (nothing outrageous, only $16), but I hope the offending sample is in fact something on there so that when I buy the official release, I'll have a collector's item on my hands.

I also bought three copies of Piracy Funds Terrorism last night from Turntablelab at $10 apiece. For some reason, idiots are already paying $100 on eBay for it. I suspect I will have a nice paycheck sometime soon here.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Friday, 18 February 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

"URAQT" is going to be on the UK version.

Chris Houghton (chrish), Friday, 18 February 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

word is she signed to interscope....

my name is... (downtown81), Saturday, 19 February 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

I'm waiting for her Behind the Music special in two weeks talking about her comeback. (Her first concert reappearance will be at Farm Aid XXX: This Time It's Personal.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 February 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

hey guess what guys, mia is total shite.

melayu, Saturday, 19 February 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

HOW YA DOIN.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 February 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

have all of you music critics had your reviews written for Arular for, like, two months or something?

poortheatre (poortheatre), Monday, 21 February 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

Also note: "Her debut single, "Galang," has sold 800 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan."

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 3 March 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

Mid-April! :(

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

800! that would make it top 5 in the UK singles chart!

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Interscope!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

1 1/2 months seems like a pretty quick turnaround actually!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

not this week, sven.

M.I.A. ALBUM RELEASE DATE CONFIRMED
"Arular" To Be Released March 22 On XL RECORDINGS
UK Release Set For April 25

“One of the year’s most remarkable albums” Rolling Stone
“Arular (is) the best album of the next five years” Pitchfork

The release date for the highly anticipated debut album from M.I.A. is now confirmed. The album, Arular, will be released in the United States on March 22 on XL Recordings through Fontana Distribution. The album will be out in the UK on April 25. The UK release will include an extra track, “URAQT”, which contains a Quincy Jones sample that was not cleared in time for its inclusion on the US release. XL Recordings has also just inked an agreement with major label Interscope/Universal for future M.I.A. releases in the US.

M.I.A. has been on a non-stop trajectory towards success since she learned how to use a Roland MC 505. In 2002 Maya Arular (a.k.a. M.I.A.) put on tape a series of six songs one of which,“Galang,” exemplified the monstrous meld of influences that make M.I.A.’s music unique. 500 copies of the single were released as a white label in 2003 and quickly became an underground hit. M.I.A. soon signed a deal with XL Recordings and started work on her album.

Since she landed on the cover of The FADER in fall of 2004, M.I.A.’s "Arular" has become one of the most anticipated albums in the history of XL Recordings. M.I.A. has been featured in countless publications on both sides of the Atlantic and has sold out shows in New York and Los Angeles. Fuel was added to the growing fire with the release of the "Piracy Funds Terrorism", vol. 1 (Hollertronix) mixtape on which M.I.A. collaborated with acclaimed DJ Diplo, who then assumed production duties for the final songs which were completed for "Arular".

M.I.A. will be playing at SXSW, Winter Music Conference and at Coachella. A full U.S. tour is being planned for later this spring.

chuck, Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

maybe ALL the labels will release it!

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

That's better news! Thanks chuck!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

Odds on M.I.A. supporting Dizze on the US tour this April?

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

Slim since she's already touring and HEADLINING the month before that!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

alex are you sure about that? i'm pretty sure the march tourdates were canceled

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 3 March 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

Really? I just bought my tickets today?!?!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 March 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

And she's still scheduled for Coachella.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 3 March 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
So it's in stores now? Did I miss the big announcement or something?

Michael Copeland, Saturday, 26 March 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

Goddammit. I liked life more when it was delayed indefinitely. I would have voted for permanently.

John Justen (johnjusten), Saturday, 26 March 2005 04:52 (twenty years ago)

Yup, it's out now. It's pretty easy to find around here, and I live in the ass-end of Alabama, which means it's getting major distribution. Which just weirds me out in all kinds of ways, most of them good.

Telephonething, Saturday, 26 March 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

I love this album to tiny little pieces, much like I love kittens.
