i'm listening to Bo Diddley's "I Don't Like You" and it's a fucking hillarious fighting song.

there's another one on the SoulJazz The Sound of Philadelphia comp by Ruby & the Party Gang called "Hey Ruby, Shut Your Mouth"

the only other things i can think of off hand are some older hip hop tracks like Positive K's "I got a man", the one song on Bobby Digital and that Yo Yo song with Ice Cube (Man's World?)

any others.

"the neighbors" by jonathan richman and "shaky ground" by sneeze, which are more or less the same song. they're light arguments, maybe closer to "discussion" that "argument," but there is disagreement between the discussers.

Does anyone have a copy of this?

"I Got a Man," Positive K

The Butterbeans & Susie and Kansas City Kitty & Georgia Tom songs on *Roots of Rap: Classic Recordings from the 1920s and 30s*

"Jackson," Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra I think

The Oran Juice Jones song is called "The Rain," and I have both the album and the 45 at home.

Dropkick Murphys, "Dirty Glass"
White Stripes, "It's True That We Love One Another"

(and of course other people like Johnny Cash did "Jackson" as well)

And there's lots of George Jones and Tammy Wynette ones too, right?

(And yeah, Joseph is totally right, as I recall Oran Juice Jones doesn't let the silly rabbit he's arguing with get a word in edgewise)

Re: The Rain
What about the part where the girl says "It may be your world, and I may just be a squirrel. But, honey, I'm getting rid of the nut."
Does that not happen? Am I crazy?
Keep in mind it's been at least 15 years since I have heard this song.

Trip Maker (Sean Witzman), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

nope, i believe you are mistaken:

(I saw you)
Hey hey baby how ya doin' come on in here
(Walking in the rain)
Got some hot chocolate on the stove waiting for you
Listen first things first let me hang up the coat
(You were holding hands and I'll)
Yeah how was your day today
Did you miss me
(Never be the same)
You did? Yeah? I missed you too
I missed you so much I followed you today
(I saw you)
That's right now close your mouth
'Cause you cold busted
(Walking in the rain)
Now just sit down here, sit down here
I'm so upset with you I don't know what to do
(You were holding hands and I'll)
You know my first impulse was to run up on you
And do a Rambo
(Never be the same)
I was about pull out the jami (gun) on you and flat blast both of you
But I didn't wanna mess up this thirt-seven hundred dollar lynx coat
So instead I chilled -- That's right chilled
I called up the bank and took out every dime.
Than I cancelled all your credit cards...
I stuck you up for every piece of jewelery I ever bought you!
Don't go lookin' in that closet 'cause everything you came here with is
packed up and waiting for you in the guest room. What were you
thinking?
You don't mess with the Juice!
I gave you silk suits, blue diamonds and gucci handbags.
I gave you things you couldn't even pronounce!
But now I can't give you nothing but advice.
Cause you're still young, yeah, you're young.
And you're gonna find somebody like me one of these days . . .
Until then, you know what you gotta do?
You gotta get on outta here with that alley-cat-coat-wearing,
hush puppy-shoe-wearing crumbcake I saw you with. Cause you
dismissed!
That's right, Silly rabbit, tricks are made for kids, don't you know
that. You without me is like corn flakes without the milk! This is my
world. You're just a squirrel trying to get a nut! Now get on outta
here. Scat!
Don't touch that coat...

There's a music tradition from Thailand known as lam klawn that is an enactment of a courting scene between a man and a woman. They each take turns singing and it can get argumentative. It's quite amazing; the performance is improvised, but the singers have to sing lines of poetry that they've learned. I guess they just have to order them in ways that make a story? Apparently, the performances could traditionally go all night long--up to ten hours or something!

"Round Table Talk" by Papa San and Lady G. There must be dozens of reggae/ragga/dancehall tracks like this, surely? Papa San threatens to trade his old lady in for a younger model, whilst Lady G questions his sexuality and cooking skills. Domestic discord at its best.

Nope. It's not a couple (it's parents vs. daughter), and it was an actual argument recorded through the walls.

Anyway, let me add "As I Sat Sadly by her Side" by Nick Cave & the Bad seeds".

Marc Almond and Sally Timms - This House Is a House of Horrors

Argh you beat me to it! Except it's troubles, not horrors. Classic, though:

Marc: [when you're] reaching for the tranquilizers, or some boy to your bed --
Sally: Hah, you can talk!

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

Oh, how could I have forgotten the utterly definitive "Think Twice" by Jackie Wilson & LaVerne Baker. The ordinary version of this song is great as it is, but check the dirty blues comps or Celebrities At Their Worst for the hilarious "Version X." LaVerne gets off most of the good lines ("I give you all the reefer and all the cocaine, and you still fuckin' up!"), but for me the highlight is JW doing his trademark vocal hiccup on the line, "Ain't gonna kiss your ass no more -- Bye-bye HO! oh-ho-oh-ho-ho-HO!" Once heard, never forgotten.

There must be quite a few R&B songs where the guy breaks into a falsetto voice & argues with himself (Albert Collins does this in "Mastercharge"). I'm sure there are songs where B.B. King threatens to go upside his own head.

re: the Oran Juice Jones query. You either want "Thunder and Lightning" by Miss Thang or "I'm not feeling you" by Yvette Michelle or "The Rain (thunder and lightning mix b/w the answer version)" by Chocolate Milk Mama. I have the first two but not the CMM track. If anyone has an mp3 of this I would be very grateful. If anyone wants the Miss Thang and Yvette Michelle tracks just message Ian SPACK on Soulseek or email me. I also have a very poor quality mpeg of Oran's "The Rain" which is dirt-cheap, hilarious and very much worth watching (I can share this on Ssk too).

It's not really an argument but there's this fantastic Brigitte Fontaine and Areski track where they're having a discussion in an apartment block that's burning down, and she's asking all these questions like "why can I smell gas" and "why's it getting hotter in here" and he's calmly replying with scientific exactitude whilst plainly not giving a fuck, over this weird, carefree lalala lounge-beat type backing. It ends with them plunging to their deaths. Great stuff.

MVB is a victim of false memory syndrome -- "America" has no guys in it.

-- Colin Meeder (amisrau...), February 17th, 2005.

I was going to just gape at this in total confusion, but I'm finding some versions of the lyrics that don't feature the guys at all, and indeed, some lyrics completely unfamiliar to me. Was this a difference between the stage version and the film? In the film (and its soundtrack), the men are definitely there.

My contribution to the topic: Edd Byrnes's "Kookie, Kookie (Lend Me Your Comb," which isn't so much an argument as a dialogue where the two participants aren't really reaching each other, leading to an increasing sense of frustration, which climaxes and gets resolved when the guy demands to know why the girl keeps bugging him about his comb. "I just want you to stop combing your hair! ...And kiss me. You're the maximum upmost!" "Dig...baby...you're the ginchiest."
