George Michael says pop is dead

BERLIN - George Michael says he's closing a chapter in his two-decade pop music career with his new autobiographical film, "George Michael: A Different Story."
The reason?
"I think my own genre is dead," Michael said Wednesday as he presented the movie at the Berlin International Film Festival. "I don't really think that there is anyone in the modern pop business who I feel I want to spar with."
Michael, 41, said he wants to "try to move my career into a different form — I don't know what that's going to be yet."

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ....

Isn't this in retaliation for Pop saying GeorgeMichael is dead?

He just made a fantastic pop album that no one heard...

I'd be, uh, morbidly curious to see how he tackles his bathroom arrest, though.

I don't know what goes on in American tea rooms, Mr Raggett, but I have already formed the suspicion that, in your country, dangling your teabag in the pot is not a precursor to cake and a little chat.

Actually, depending on which pot you're in you most certainly could get some cake (no chatting though, that's forbidden).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

I'm surprised he didn't just record a jazz standards album.

As for Patience, there just weren't enough hooks to hang onto and his lyrics weren't nearly as intricate as, say, "Cowboys & Angels" or "Praying for Time." I sympathize with his commercial decline to an extent, but only an extent.

If George Michael asked you to wank him off in a private bathroom would you do it?

Calzer W, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

Hell, I'd do it in a public bathroom just for "Everything She Wants" alone.

Speedhump Bungle (noodle vague), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

I completely disagree. While Listen without Prejudice is an undeniable Classic with a Capital C, Patience "Cars and Trains" is a great lyric (and musically as good as any song he's written). "John and Elvis are Dead" seemed really bland to me at first, but with time that lyric has grown on me. The title song is almost a reprise of "Praying for Time". I'm biased, cuz I feel like I'm the only person here who gives a shit about the album, but at the very least it's not something to dismiss easily.

john'n'chicago, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

George should work with Lil' Jon.

This is so OTM that I want to put my George Michael records and my Lil' Jon records on top of each other and try to make them hump.

there isn't nay other good songs.

I guess you didn't much listen to the album. For one thing, "Cars and Trains" was the best song on the album, which is saying a lot on an album with "Amazing". That makes three gr8 songs out of twelve. Lessee... "Precious Box" has a great hook and one of his better vocals. I could go on, but it'll be pointless. (The only possible complaint I can fathom is too many slow and moderate tempos and song length -- but then you'd actually had to have listened to the album to know that.)

I think the reflex reaction to someone like George Michael is to remember his pastel and feathered-hair days or his beverly hills blow job and immediately write him off. I will always give him a chance though since Listen with Prejudice is nigh on perfect. In this case, I'm glad I did, since, while this one isn't perfect, it's still better than 98% of what I heard last year (ie. it was in my top 5)

La Camilla Henemark, Thursday, 17 February 2005 05:35 (twenty years ago)

I've always felt George Michael thinks he's opinion is above everyone else's, like he had some unique perspective on things. He's just an idiot, of course. This is a vibrant time for pop. He's just not part of it.

Patience would have been much better at half the length. As I have said previously, the album he should have made last year was Liars by Todd Rundgren.
