TS: Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" vs. Lifehouse's "Hanging by a Moment"

I find them more or less indistinguishable, if generically proficient as romantic anthems. So I'd declare, despite an affinity for more bits of the Clarkson, an early tie of indifference. Though I wonder how the Clarkson song would sound with a male singer, and vice versa.

it would probably sound like wolf eyes. it always does.

seahorse genius (seahorse genius), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

With the Clarkson song, it's nice to hear a singer who does not sing in the Eddie Vedder voice.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

I didn't think the Lifehouse guy was especially Vedderesque. And is being Vedderesque any worse than being (very) Clarksonesque?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

Post-Creed "Reer" singers ruin every song they sing.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

LOL

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

Yeah - they might be similar, but I can't get past the dude's voice (which is actually more Stapp-esque than Veedery). Also, whenever I come across that song on the radio, it's always at the damn chorus, which I can't stand.

Also - y'know, the Kelly Clarkson song is actually a "go pound sand" anthem.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

i don't hear the connection at all. thank fucking god.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

BOTH CRAP!. There's your connection.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 February 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

one of my friends really liked Hanging by a Moment.he said it was a about quarks.I think I zoned out during the explanation though.

Dude you are so secretly a fan of Lifehouse. Now admit your 7 Mary 3 love.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 February 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

Hanging by a Moment could've been better done had it been done by a different singer. Singers who sound like Cobain, Vedder or Weiland should be shot on sight.

Cunga (Cunga), Thursday, 17 February 2005 02:30 (twenty years ago)

My first thought when I heard "Since U Been Gone" was "Ah, the new Laura Branigan." I don't think this when I hear "Hanging by a Moment."

"Since U Been Gone"
I haven't even thought of Lifehouse in at least 3 years.

Un investigador del siglo XXI (AaronHz), Thursday, 17 February 2005 03:53 (twenty years ago)

I sorta like Lifehouse...

The best bit about the Kelly Clarkson song is when it turns into 'Maps' in the middle of it.

If by "best" you mean best reason to have her slain, then yes.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 1 April 2005 03:12 (twenty years ago)

FUCK ONE KELLY CLARKSON

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 1 April 2005 03:48 (twenty years ago)

Two of the three best MOR songs of the decade.

I'd go with Lifehouse, if I had to choose.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 1 April 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

I greatly enjoy Lifehouse, strangely...

This song is totally fabulous! Is it by that songwriter, you know, the one, Lynda whatever, she writes songs for Pink and Christina Aguilera? Rock is funny.

michael3, Friday, 3 June 2005 05:27 (twenty years ago)

I enjoy the bridge in HBAM when the singer morphs from Eddie Vedder to Ed Kowalczyk: "There's nothing left to loo-hoose / and nothing left to faa-hind."

SUBG wipes the floor with it, though.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 3 June 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

I can never tell the difference between Lifehouse and The Calling, the latter of which for some weird reason gets shitloads of airplay in my hometown.

"Since U Been Gone", any day.

Roz (Roz), Friday, 3 June 2005 06:23 (twenty years ago)

"Hanging By A Moment" is one of the worst singles of the past ten years.

Ian John50n (orion), Friday, 3 June 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

"Since U Been Gone" is clearly the single of the year, thus far.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 3 June 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I've heard this Lifehouse song. Unless it's the one I reviewed. < / art of pretend forgetfulness>

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 3 June 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

And Alfred is OTM.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 3 June 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

nah, JM, that was "You and Me". This one's much, much, much better (though certainly many would disagree with even that--see today's SGS for evidence).

I can't believe an airline would be so stupid as to do this

da croupier, Thursday, 12 March 2015 15:10 (ten years ago)

Like anything short of a legit superstar act and you're more likely to annoy than impress

da croupier, Thursday, 12 March 2015 15:12 (ten years ago)

I would have been more impressed if it had been Whitehouse

DJP, Thursday, 12 March 2015 15:14 (ten years ago)

Fuck Max Martin and Dr. Luke.

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 17 June 2016 00:33 (nine years ago)

I remember how around the time that "Since U Been Gone" blew up I kept insistently predicting that Rilo Kiley's "Portions for Foxes" was gonna be a breakout hit (this was around that time where lots of commercially friendly "indie" bands were having hits, often thanks to The OC or Greys Anatomy) until I realized that Clarkson's song was gobbling up what I thought would have been RK's audience. I still don't think that I was that off the mark in predicting big things for "Portions for Foxes"--former child actress hits with a big, hooky break-up song had worked before, remember--and, decent enough as it is, I've always sorta resented "Since U Been Gone" for becoming the hit that "Portions for Foxes" should have been.

rhymes with "blondie blast" (cryptosicko), Friday, 17 June 2016 02:00 (nine years ago)

Wow, if you asked me a minute ago if I started this thread I never would have said yes.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 17 June 2016 02:03 (nine years ago)
