Singer/songwriter Judee Sill was the first person signed to David
Geffen's Asylum Records. In the early Seventies, she released two
brilliant albums on that label before being dropped. Her third album
recorded in the mid-Seventies remained unreleased after her 1979 death
from a cocaine overdose. The eight songs intended for that album are
included here, freshly mixed by Jim O'Rourke. This two disc set also
includes many Sill rareities from the '60s and '70s, including a 12
minute five song live video clip on enhanced CD. Super deluxe
packaging featuring a 72 page book!

I've had mp3's of some of these songs for some time -- and while they're probably not up there with her best work, a few are quite good. "Things Are Looking Up" is the most undeniable of the bunch.

If anyone's interested in helping deny Jim of his gravediggers fee, you can find mp3's of these tracks here: http://www.webnoir.com/bob/music/.

Just wondering if anyone has checked this out yet, bought it yesterday, sounds pretty good to these ears.

bought it and have been living in it for days. "dead time bummer blues" is such a great song.. best of all tho is the accompanying book. clarifies some of the nastier stories floating around the interweb. I could do with a full on biography, what a fascinating and gorgeous artiste. (swoon).
also : won't somebody compress the video of her 'old grey whistle test' performance and stick it online ?

I look forward to reading that puppy tonight. If I can find a way of persuading the techie guys at the studio I work at to mpg the OGWT performance I shall, keep you posted.

Sadly this will only be of use to London-based ILxors, but I see that a quantity of the first two JS albums on CD are currently available in HMV at Oxford Circus. £21.99 each, alas, but they're there if you want them, and probably won't be for much longer, even at that price...

Damn, I look at those sucker about twice a week and nearly buy them but I paid more than that for Japanese imports downstairs in HMV a few years ago, I know they probably sound better and have bonus track etc: but..I...just.......can't gah!

good stuff on this, but can't help but be a little bothered by the O'Rourkian mix -- works great for a so-so singer like O'Rouke but buries Sill's beautiful voice and plays up the guitars too much.
