There has definitely be talk about them, especially by Dan Selzer... in fact, I found this latest post:

Looking forward to Twice as Nice. I love those 52nd Street records. Do you know what will be on Twice as Nice? If they go more for the scene and less for the specifics of having to be produced by New Order members, there's the Streetlife 12", tons of Paul Haig, Lavvi Ebbel or whatever it's called, I wonder what else.

I picked up Twice As Nice weeks ago while on sale, and I also have Be Music as well. Here's the track listing for Twice As Nice:

1. 52nd Street "Express"
2. Cheyne "Call Me Mr. Telephone"
3. Quando Quango "Low Rider (remix)"
4. Anna Domino "Summer (Arthur Baker Remix)"
5. 52nd Street "Look Into My Eyes"
6. Quando Quango "Genius (Part 2)"
7. Marcel King "Keep On Dancing"
8. Shark Vegas "You Hurt Me"
9. New Order "Video 586 (Edit)"
10. Section 25 "Sakura"
11. Thick Pigeon "Jess + Bart (Remix)"
12. RFATP "Motherland"
13. 52nd Street "Cool As Ice (Jellybean Mix)"

Now, I'm sure Dan has this by now, so I think his review will be best.

I've only had time to listen to the version of "5 8 6" here, and while it's nice and gritty and droney, I still think the definitive version of that song is the Peel Session version.. (and the Power, Corruption, And Lies version is great too! But the inner DJ fool in me complains that it's too impractical for beatmatching purposes, with the jumpy intro, fade in, and the "I see DAN-ger/DAN-ger/DAN-ger" that can screw up the segueing)

Anyway, I thought there ought to be thread dedicated to both of these compilations.. and possibly more followups, so go!

Love 'em, great stuff, etc. But my brain is still slightly fogged right now to say more.

what does the shark vegas track sound like? i've never actually heard it. i should look online, i suppose, but ... i've never bothered.

I've only got the first one, Cool As Ice. It has a few things of mild interest to me, but not much. I kindof hoped it would all hang together better but instead it mostly sounds like dated and cheesy mid-80's dance music which would have sounded really great if it was like 1986 or something. Useful for DJing, though, I can well understand that, particularly if you have it on vinyl.

There's a few tracks I wouldn't mind hearing on the second one, though, including Shark Vegas. I can't now recall if I ever got to hear Shark Vegas or not.

I've recently discovered this band called Foreign Press that the LTM site says Bernard Sumner produced at one point, but it's a mystery to me why they didn't end up on either of these compilations unless James just had a problem getting permission. They were apparently from Manchester and I know of only 3 12"es by them, "Set Your Love In Motion" (which was the one reportedly produced by Bernard), "The Great Divide" (which I now have on vinyl for my very own and I noticed on the sleeve it says "a Dojo/Be Music production") and another one called "Climbing" which I'm waiting to arrive in the mail so I can confirm it is indeed the same band. There was also a record in 1979 by a band called Foreign Press called "Downpour" and they too were reportedly from Manchester (the record was even produced by JD/NO manager Rob Gretton!) but it's more stripped down punk, sounds so much different to their later danceable style that it's hard to believe it could be the same band.

I halfway wonder if Dan Selzer knows of them because "Set Your Love In Motion" and "The Great Divide" would make great things to have in a danceable 80's DJ set, and I highly recommend them to anyone who likes early New Order.

Same band, yes. I saw them with JD in 79.

Good heavens.

Also, fancy seeing you around here!

the other band inexplicably missing from these sets is Red Turns To, whose sole 12" is entirely excellent and massively recommended by me.

Yes, that is a wonderful 12".

The Spiderwebbed Wilderness (Bimble...), Sunday, 7 August 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

I have and love the Red Turns To 12", one of the guys from OMD w/ New Order folk apparently, but haven't heard of Foreign Press...will keep a look out. There's also the Bridge 12", which is either produced by New Order, or is a novelty record of a band trying to see how much they could sound like New Order.

There should be a law against referring to the Shark Vegas 12" by anything other than its full title, to wit: You Hurt Me But Now Your Flesh Lies Rotting in Hell.

Nice to see my old band get a mention on the interweb, Foreign Press, formally Emergency, did indeed release all the afore mentioned vinyl, there was a line up change between "Downpour" and the more Duran Duran stuff, the Bass and Lead guitar player having left by then, Incedentally, John Peel liked the B side of the first single, and played it several times, although the rythem guitar is way out of tune, rushed job, Rob Gretton was in attendance, mainly to get his name on the sleeve, The Joy Division connection was fairly deep, Emergency/Foreign Press either supported, or were supported by Warsaw/Joy Division, having shared the same Rehearsal rooms on Little Peter Street, Manchester. The Great Divide was produced By Hooky, and not Bernard, cheers

Hey, thanks for stopping by! Always nice to get some facts straight. Doing anything musical these days?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

Hey Colin,

who does the vocal on "The Great Divide"? I've only rediscovered this track literally just hours ago after a few decades absence!
For that matter, it'd be great to know the entire band lineup.

Mike.

mike devery (mikestein), Monday, 17 April 2006 06:03 (nineteen years ago)

The vocals where provided by Ralph Bowe on all singles, (and sorry about all the smelling mistakes in my original post) I should clarify a little, the idea was to get Rob Grettons name on the sleeve, and not Rob wanting to be on the sleeve, if you get my drift....
