Anyone heard the new album? Thoughts?

Chris Daddil, Thursday, 17 February 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

sounds a little smoother than previous material but i find myself enjoying it quite a bit.

Rizz (Rizz), Thursday, 17 February 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

No concrete thoughts yet, but it sounds like they worked harder on this one than the first one and it comes across in both the sound and the songs themselves.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 17 February 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

Didn't they use 4 or 5 different producers? Yes, I imagine they sweated over this intensely.

PiersT, Friday, 18 February 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

It sounds like the Chills... no bad thing. There's none of the big Remember Me type moments on it though

sonicred (sonicred), Friday, 18 February 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

i'm strangely intrigued by this. i listened to the last one a lot for two weeks, then never played it again. IIRC the final track had a wonderful rumbling piano introduction and swelled into a thing of mighty wonder.

they're filed in my mental collection next to ... that other band, what the fuck were they called ... electric soft parade, that's them. in the bit marked "stuff you can't deny is good, but will probably never have any reason to return to".

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 18 February 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
They're on for a top 10 hit this Sunday, possibly. The mere fact of this has me grinning, even if the single is rather underwhelming and I get the feeling the rest of the album is too. BSP might be going top ten.

Tee hee hee...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

there's about, ooh, 5 songs on the album more appropriate as singles than 'oily stage', but having said that, there is nothing with the manic immediacy of a 'Remember Me' or even less 'Apologies To Insect Life'. it's all a bit more 'Carrion' and that's no bad thing at all. i like it - i'll give it four stars, Terry.

Lee F# (fsharp), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm looking forward to hearing this. I saw the video to ..Oily Stage the other night but I'd just come in from a heavy night and I don't remember too much about how it sounded. Good, I think.

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'd be quite pleased if it does well based on the bits of it I like even if they're tangled up in a mess of anodyne riff-age.

I keep trying to listen to the album and getting bored, which I think has as much to do with my attention span as the quality, though it did seem a bit 'nice'. I like that the bassist is singing a bit more as well though.

Michael Philip Philip Philip Philip Annoyman v1.0 (Ferg), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

I badly slagged the single and now I have guilt after abuse from indie loving friends... it's just so meh and BSP should be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa oooooooooooooooh

elwisty (elwisty), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
i can only afford one new cd by a band with a pretentious name: should it be BSP or decemberists? i'm quite torn with apathy.

irrigation can save your people (irrigation can save your peopl), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

BSP over decemberists any day of the week, and i'm no decemberists hater.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

if someone would just pretend and say its got a 'remember me' on it, i'm sold. else i'm picking up the[teh] killahs.

irrigation can save your people (irrigation can save your peopl), Friday, 8 April 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

its got, like, 8 'remember me''s on it

rizzx (rizzx), Friday, 8 April 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

it isn't a patch on the new Decemberists and has nothing at all that sounds even remotely like Remember Me on it.

but i still recommend it, even so.

Lee F# (fsharp), Friday, 8 April 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

umm...well i got both. and mr kohncke to round things out. damn record stores and their policy of exchanging products for currency...

irrigation can save your people (irrigation can save your peopl), Friday, 8 April 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Open Season is definitely growing on me. It's much more sedate than the debut. There probably is nothing as astounding as Remember Me or Fear of Drowning, but it definitely avoids the sophomore slump. Songwriting isn't a problem with these guys. My favorite is song 8, Victorian Ice.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 8 April 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Yeah it's a good follow-up. Much more sedate than the first one (think Blackout, Something Wicked and A Wooden Horse) but there are some spikier moments. Please Stand Up is the new Carrion too. If you're already a fan, get it.

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Friday, 8 April 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

and has nothing at all that sounds even remotely like Remember Me on it.

it doesn't have any 'Remember Me' ptII on it, no. but most of the tracks come damn close to it's catchiness

rizzx (rizzx), Friday, 8 April 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

North Hanging Rock is my favourite piece of music from this year this far. I love this album.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

four months pass...
I am genuinely surprised how much I've been enjoying this record recently.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 28 August 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

so much better than i expected, now i'm gutted i didn't go and see them on the tour. damn it all!

piscesboy, Sunday, 11 September 2005 11:26 (twenty years ago)

As people have said, it's a little smoother than the last one, and probably doesn't have quite the drama of that one, but it's still a really good album.
