The Bronze on Buffy had more edge. TGIF is more hip.

Where can hipsters combine art and boozing even when
the P.S.1 summer season is over? They need look no
further than their own backyard thanks to Supreme
Trading, a 7500 square-foot salon/bar with multiple
rooms for live bands, DJs, even an art gallery.
Exposed brick walls frame the main bar area, and
suspended light fixtures serve as artful accents to
the hangar-like open space. The crowd, which sports
the latest in so-not-trendy-it's-trendy attire
(goodbye ironic trucker hats, hello skinny ties!),
guzzle down Stella and dance to the latest in indie,
nu wave, and post punk rock. Several banquettes are
off to the side, and for a little more privacy, a
second level offers an intimate lounge complete with a
pool table and leather benches overlooking the dance
floor. But if it's a breath of fresh smoke you crave,
head to the ceiling-less smoker's lounge with Little
Leagueˆstyle bleachers. If you're into indie rock but
not the scene's in-your-face attitude, this party is
definitely worth the trip on the L train.

PLUS LE CHANGE PLUS LA STAY DE SAME

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Thursday, 17 February 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

(goodbye ironic trucker hats, hello skinny ties!)

Me, I go from one extreme to another.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 February 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

I must have something deliciously ironicastic to say about this...

Broken Hipster (Broken Hipster), Thursday, 17 February 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

Well, this is no surprise. Even some of the actual cool places in Brooklyn are not as cool as they are supposed to be.

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm wearing a skinny hat and a trucker tie RIGHT NOW!

Austin (Austin), Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

If you're into indie rock but
not the scene's in-your-face attitude

Is indie rock intense now?

mat, Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

I'm wearing a skinny trucker right now.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

Does it fit well?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

Will it make you breakfast in the morning? Or vice versa?

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

oh who the fuck cares?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

IN YOUR FACE

stockholm cindy's scenester world with martin bashir (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

Ha, I'm DJing at this place in March. I've never actually been to this place, though.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

x-post

Ned wears the look of love.

scamperingalpaca (Chris Hill), Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

That would be so cool if Williamsburg had a place that was an exact replica of the Bronze. Kind of like those places that recreate the atmosphere of Cheers.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure if I understand the point here - it's too nice, therefore lame? It should be more dive-y and "real" and cater less to its actual clientele of middle class/upper middle class hipsters? It should have more vampire battles?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

more chupacabras, less vampires.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

um, every bar should have more vampire battles

DougD, Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

If you don't like vampire battles, you don't like fun.

Austin (Austin), Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

The place itself doesn't sound that bad, but the tone of that copy comes off a bit lame to me.

sleep (sleep), Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

screw irony...where's my brooklyn emo bar/gallery/consolation center?

irrigation can save your people, Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

the tone of that copy comes off a bit lame to me.

Yeah, well, bars aren't known for their writing staffs. "Hello skinny ties" = "Welcome kiss of death!"

This place isn't that bad -- they have Master of Puppets on the jukebox and lots of different little zones to take over. There have been and will be way worse additions to the neighborhood -- remember The Pod?

Cheers to:
Enid's for food and people
Barcade for Popeye & Moon Patrol
Southside for the psyche/metal/country DJs

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Thursday, 17 February 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

Matthew, when you DJ there you should just keep playing that breakdown in the 808 State song where the deep sampled voice goes:

"IN YOUR FACE! IN YOUR FACE!"

I hear the indie kids love that.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Thursday, 17 February 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

Ha, maybe I will. Do you know the title of that song?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 17 February 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

matthew, will you be spinning mp3s?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 17 February 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

hard disks spin.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 17 February 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

7500 sq. ft. is a hell of a lot of room.

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 17 February 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'll be using my laptop.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 17 February 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

1. All things retro should be outlawed.
2. If you need to advertize, you're probably attracting people who tend not to make a new interesting place.
3. I'd be interested to hear Ian's gig, tho.

I used to like the hip hop nights at Black Betty.

iang, Thursday, 17 February 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

there's kids on the spoon list at fisticuffs with each other over downloading, so yes, indie rock is in your face!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 17 February 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

also, this place sounds like the hacienda, except without any of the fun.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 17 February 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

Did someone at the place actually write that copy?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 17 February 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

I agree with sleep, the copy is too much but the place sounds alright.

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 18 February 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

All of the people I know who like this place are in the art world, and the party I'm DJing is an afterparty sort of thing for the Armory Show. So that seems to be who they are catering to. Not so much indie rockers.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 18 February 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

Where did you pick that pitch up, anyway? Looks like investor fodder more than a true attempt to woo NYU students. Anyway 1500 sq ft at least is a driveway used as a smoking pen, another 3000 goes to the gallery, and the rest is broken up into smaller spaces. There's nothing interesting about the place, but it's not another gargantuan nightmare like whatever's going in next door to Planet Thai. As long as Trading Co. don't bring back the fat bald guys with clipboards and headsets tending door, I won't shake my fist at the place as I quickly walk past.

That would be so cool if Williamsburg had a place that was an exact replica of the Bronze.

There's a corny place called Relish that serves bad food, has neon lights, and looks like a set from 90210. They're closed a lot, so I think they make most of their money as a movie set. Virtual food, virtual setting, virtual fun.

The Bellevue from Times Square just reopened, squashed into a little tiny square on Kent Ave. It's weird to see anything-goes Manhattan bar aesthetics relocated in generally tighter concept (more precious) Williamsburg. But if you pass out, the ceiling is covered with Judas Priest posters. Don't do that, though.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Friday, 18 February 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

I don't like indie rock much.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Friday, 18 February 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

Matthew, the 808 State song in question is called, surprisingly enough, "In Yer Face".

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 18 February 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

The Bellevue has a framed poster of a Duff McKegan solo show on the wall. They're got the post-prime rocker thing down to muthfuckin samurai levels, mang.

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Friday, 18 February 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

What's a hipster?

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Friday, 18 February 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

What's a hipster?

don't play coy with us!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 18 February 2005 02:54 (twenty years ago)

I like art!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 18 February 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

No, wait, I know, it's a dude who posts to messageboards about how awesome Talk Talk is, right?

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Friday, 18 February 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

Bellvue never closed, it's still there. The old owner opened a new bar on Kent Ave., with a different name.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 February 2005 06:29 (twenty years ago)

I might go there to look at the Preist pix before I pass out.

I've not been to the place yet, though its just a few blocks away.

It was the copy that oogeyed me much.

iang, Friday, 18 February 2005 06:38 (twenty years ago)

i like supreme trading a lot as a venue. its where i had my warriors halloween party! though who the hell wrote that review. also, im starting a monthly party there beginning in april.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 18 February 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

What's the name of te Bellevue guy's new place? Maybe it can replace the Sweetwater as Williamburg's primary source of bad attitude and poolsticks?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 18 February 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

i hate bellevue! almost as much as o'connors in bklyn

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 18 February 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Don't they realize?

Beards are the new skinny ties!!

righteousmaelstrom, Friday, 18 February 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 18 February 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

bellvue owner's new place: duff's alcohol abuse center!

o'connors rulez, phil is just being a wimp.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 February 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

for some reason, o'connors makes me feel especially aware of being chink. i don't know why!

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 18 February 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

whoa.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 February 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

whoa what?

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 18 February 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

whoa as in i'm sorry dude that sucks! i love you phil.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 February 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Fuck, I'm well into my beard. Damn this Sneetches life!

Bellvue never closed, it's still there. The old owner opened a new bar on Kent Ave., with a different name.

Okay, so the Bellevue still technically stands as a bar in Times Square, but spirit of the place including the jukebox, the Motley Crue dolls, the laughing guy mascot, the signed pictures of Mortiis, and all the signs that say Bellevue are relocated to n. 3rd & Kent. It's called Duff's, and you'll know it by the RIP Dimebag stickers on the door. Oh, but the urine cake stench was left behind.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Friday, 18 February 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

yeah, all that stuff is gone. and pajo isn't a jock.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 February 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha. Well, he was young and wearing sneakers -- how was I to know? He probably ran track, at least...

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Friday, 18 February 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

Pajo? From Slint?

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 18 February 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

yeah, other-thread joke.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 February 2005 23:53 (twenty years ago)

So I had to search the source for that bar blurb: New York magazine, the voice of the underground. Prepare for an invasion of tanning salon grannies.
